Guru Worship Guru WorshipOur worship (upsana) of our desired Deity (Ia-Devat) is our

actions (kriya or karma), which bring us close to the Deity and create mutual relationship
(samyoga) with it, so that worshiper becomes aware to the living presence of a Deity and the
Deity becomes responsive to the prayers of worshiper. There exists waist body of different ways
of worship, yogic and tantric practices, which are traditionally associated with the Ntha
Sampradaya. Above all of them is the Path of the Devotion to Guru (Guru Bhakti), established by
the examples of lives of the Guru Goraksh Nath and his Guru Matsyendra Nth. In the opening
verses of Goraksha Shataka, the Guru Goraksh Nath himself has praised the grace of his Guru as
the Main Cause of his own success in the yoga practice: rguru paramnanda vande

Spiritual Union (Yoga Mrga), all other ways away from it are the hypocritical (paa) ways
(mrga). The worship of Guru is not the particularity of the Nath Sampradaya alone, but an
essential part of all established Indian spiritual traditions as well. Even the Sanskrit word
upsana, which is a general term for all kinds of spiritual worship and methodic for
approaching God, when translated literally means to seat or abide near by. To seat or abide near
whom? Of course, to ones own spiritual preceptor (Guru). Or in other words, what ever form of
worship (upsana) a spiritual aspirant (jigyasu) may perform, it is effective when one abides
(sana) in the nearness (upa) of a spiritual preceptor (guru), and not effective if done without it:
gurumukhy kriy sarv bhukti mukti phalaprad | gurvanukt kriy sarv niphal
syuryato dhruva || True Devotion Yogi Deva Nath said, There is no such thing as free lunches
in this world and beyond of it. And what one can get in this world, without paying first, with own
money, time or efforts? The answer is quite straightforward, it is only garbage and wastage of
others that available everywhere around free of cost. Any valuable things in this world demand
their price and more over, well protected. Then more valuable is thing, then bigger price is asked
for it and better it is protected. The Natha Panth would defiantly work for those who offered
themselves to the Divine totally, not hoping for anything else in exchange, besides Divine
(Dharma Nagari), but it is impotent for those who looking for easy and crooked ways. Therefore,
Mr. Greedy, Mr. Cunning, Mr. Wise and Mr. Smart would never board on the boat leaving
towards the deliverance of their soul. Miser pays twice, and at last gets nothing, after all, how
one can cheat one who already knows everything better and owns everything? Cheat cheats only
himself; wise becomes blind because of his all-knowing wisdom and smart becomes consumed
by the pride of own superiority. However, how one could pay, if the balance is already below
zero? And where to procure that currency, which capable to pay to one who lacks nothing? In
dealing with ones own Supreme Self, the game is straight; then more one loses of ones own,
then more one gets of the Supreme Soul (Param Atma). For small attainment, one has to pay
little heed; to get more, one has to give more; and to get all, one has to give oneself entirely;
consequently, an utterly greedy person goes around empty-handed (empty-hearted). On the
Spiritual Path, to get everything, one has to give up everything, all personal attachments,
aspirations and ambitions. TM 7.1778 My body, wealth and life, He took from me as sacrificial
offering, through ritual appropriate; He directed his spiritual glance at me and dispelled my
Karma's network to destruction; and then He laid His hands on me and planting His feet on my
head in a trice imparted Spiritual Awareness and thus my birth's cycle He ended He, the Nandi,
through these successive acts of initiation (diksha). When one attempts to come in the direct
touch with Divine, all attempts of cheating and negotiation are of no use. The total surrender
oneself to the Authentic Path created by the Guru Goraksh Nath in the form of the Natha
Sampradaya is the only proper alternative for the followers of the Natha Marga: panth bina

man, quench (the fire of) knowledge you have learned from books! TM 5.1489 They that follow
not the Twelve-Tiered Path of Communion (saha marga), neither will they know Guru nor God,
nor True Faith. The Goddess of Grace will frown at them, salvation shall never be their portion;
and they do lose both their stature and kith. The Path of the Guru Devotion is the essential part of
the Natha Sampradaya, which was integrated into it by the Guru Gorakh Nath himself. That is
why the Nath Sampradaya also know as the Gur iya Parampar. There is no another way of
become a member of the Natha Sampradaya then accepting one of its members as own Guru.
However, the formal acceptance of a Guru is not enough, for it should be backed up by sincerity
and true devotion of a spiritual aspirant. The Sadhana of Nthas centered around unshakable faith
and devotion towards own Guru, established by the example of Gorakh Nath. In accordance with
one legend, the Guru Gorakh Nath even has given up his right eye in order to please his Guru
Matsyendra Nath, who later restored it. My commitment is ability of my Guru (mera bhakti,
guru ki akti), says famous aphorism of the Ntha Yogis. In other words, this means that the
Guru is effective for those who are truly devoted to him, but ineffective for those who are not:
TM 6.1690 Scriptures to guide them, the disciples worthy find the Guru who is without blemish;
they know their job and so find the Path; the rest are destined to destruction. TM 6.1693 When

Nath Sampradaya, is worthy to be followed, and recognizes the authority of its founder, then he
has to sincerely follow it, if not, then he is free to look elsewhere, for there exist plenty of

to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it. For what will it
profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits himself? Or what will a man give in
exchange for his soul? Jesus said, When you will turn yourselves towards death, you will be

for the Kingdom of God belongs to those, who have put themselves to death. Jesus said,

Offering own life to the Supreme Lord. On practice, this means total surrendering to the

Awareness is accomplished by offering life to the Sovereign Lord. In this short aphorism are
reflected both: the Essence of the Yoga Path and the Ultimate End of Yoga. The disciples asked
Jesus, Which of deeds are purest in this world? He replied, The deeds of one, who obeys the
Orders of God and works for His sake, without desiring approval of anyone else excluding Him.
Some practices can be useful in bringing about the fragmentary glimpses of the Divine State, but
none of them can help in realizing the same state permanently (nirutthana), as the own Natural

required to maintain some kinds of protocols for the approaching of an important person, in the
spiritual life there exist certain protocols for the approaching the Divinity. The protocol for the
approaching the Supreme Lord Shiva, established by Shiva himself, is through awakening of the
Goddess Kundalini, and the prescribed sequence for the awakening Kundalini (also established
by the Lord of Yogis) is through the Grace of Guru. This sequence is not merely the whim of
Shiva or Guru Goraksh Nath, or the result of their personal liking or disliking, but based on the
Natural Order of the Universe (Sanatana Dharma), which couldn't be bypassed by any means. As
in ordinary life one will have very little hope to approach an important person without proper
appointment procedure, so in the spiritual world, one who disregards the established protocol
will end in vain, trouble or even ruin. So what becomes important in such situation is to know the
prescribed course of action and to cling to it firmly, then one will succeed with the minimal
efforts and safely reaches to the last point of the journey. yasmin darote sati tatkat

the spiritual realms is also difficult to obtain. And it is very rare if one would be established in

amongst them, which is capable to replace Guru? It would be very good if it was so, but so far,
no such book was created, which was able to accomplish this task. Books are helpful in many
aspects, but best books can do, is again to urge us to take refuge in the nearness of Guru: kimatra

(stra-koi) to quote? Indeed, it is almost impossible (durlabh) that one would be established in
the state of the permanent cessation of mind (citta-virnti), without the Grace of Guru (guru-
kp parm vin). The reasons for this are that the process of the spiritual transformation is much
complicated one, and realms attained by it are beyond of comprehension with anything in this
world. OK, God is all prevailing, God is everywhere, God is inside of everyone, God is even
inside me, but then what? After learning all these, from here and there, does God became to
known to me as He is or all these are only my own mental speculations? Until the true
knowledge of the things as they are comes, the state of perpetual confusion would always
prevail. Ignorance literally kills. A fly (awareness) becomes trapped in glass of window
(Swadhishthana or Maya), not far away from widely opened door behind (Sahasrara or Spirit),
and after undertaking many courageous efforts, dies there only, being unable neither to go
through it, nor to leave its fatal attraction. And what makes it die? It is ignorance of the way to
freedom, otherwise available, which kills it. The door behind was opened all the time, but the fly
dies there only, because of its stubborn clinging to the apparently open space of the window and
lack of good guidance. In the same way as for crossing a dark tunnel, one has to leave behind its
one opening and enter into darkness, the spiritual aspirant first, has to discard the Natural Door
(of Swadhishtahana) he bound to, in order to proceed to the Supernatural Door (of Sahasrara).
As numerous spiritual traditions of India and of the world agree, this could become possible only
through taking refuge in own Guru (Spiritual Master or Nath). In the spiritual world, it is Guru,
who dispels the darkness of disciples ignorance, and saves one from constant striking own head
against the Illusory Power of the Lord (My), so that one may proceed to his (her) True Self,
and nobody and nothing else; so they say. The numerous religious scriptures have declared that
God abides everywhere and within everyone; but then what? Would this knowledge be enough to
bring about our spiritual realization and liberation from consequent rebirths? We may recognize
the authority of the spiritual scriptures and accept them on faith, but the knowledge expounded in
them would not become our own unless we know it through our own experience. Although the
Lord is all knowing and within everyone, if we would blindly follow guidance of everyone as the
Divine Guidance; then for sure, we will end up in great confusion and trouble. Of course, the
Lord prevails within and without of each embodied living being, but not each and everyone are
worthy to be followed. It is one of the fundamental conceptions of most religions and sects
existing in India that for all practical spiritual purposes, own Guru should by looked on as the
embodiment of Divine and as one through whom the Divine manifests its Will to us (Adesha).

paradox. If the Guru is already resides inside of us and within everyone, why then there is need
for an external Guru? For those who are far from the spiritual realms of life, the question of
relations of Guru and God is quite puzzling one, and many are confused at this point, even in
India where the devotion to Guru is an established tradition. The best clarification at this point, in
accordance with my view, was given by the Saint Kabir: guru govind do khare kke lgu py|

he through him the Lord became revealed to me. I have obtained Guru, who is the light of
spiritual knowledge, and my life became full of bliss, but yet, to meet him became possible
because of the Lords (Vishnu) grace. The Guru and the Lord are one, indeed, while the bodily

So I tell you, seek the light in the darkness and become able to stand in it, for if you not in the
light, then you lie below in the darkness. For the body dragged the spirit down from above, but if
you will be able to give yourself up, you will find existence forever, ever and ever. The Apostle
John said, Therefore, brothers, after considering the Grace of the Lord and his kindly affection
toward us, let us worship Him as those to whom He has shown mercy, not with our fingers, not
with our mouth, not with our tongue, not with any whatsoever part of our body, but with the
disposition of our soul, as of him who became a man apart from this body. Jesus said, And
again I reprove you. O You, who are still so much are, make yourselves like those, who are not,
in order that you may come to dwell with Him, who is not. TM 9.2665 Our Holy Nandi once He

seekers become ready for their spiritual journey, the Supreme Lord Himself accepts the form of
Guru to guide them. It is one of unquestionable axioms of the Siddha Siddhanta that God reveals
Himself to an adept trough Guru. TM 5.1527 When the embodied soul (jiva) attains the State of
Neutrality to deeds, good and evil (vairagya), then does the Divine Grace descend in the form of
Guru, removes all attributes, and implants the supreme knowledge (jnana) that is in the cool

by the Lord Shiva himself, that God reveals Himself to an adept and guide him on the path of
yoga trough Gurus grace, and not by any other means. In one famous mantra, which is widely
popular in India, Guru saluted as being same with the Three Gods main of Hindu pantheon:

The above mentioned mantra , along with few other verses praising guru attached to it, integrated
in the daily worship of two main ascetic Shaiva traditions of India, the followers of Guru Gorakh
Nath (Nathas) and of Adi Shankaracharya (Sanyasi or Dasanami). Originally, some of these
verses are part of the composition known as Guru Stotra. Other verses are: dhynamla

definition of rules and regulations of a yogi (Niyama). The Guru Mantra TM 7.1842 Above the

Adhara ascending scorches Malas, the endless chanting of His name dispels Darkness (of
Ignorance); harass the rope of bondage (Pasha), Jiva a heir to, thus do you liberation seek; the
Lord, forsooth, is the Guru Supreme. There exist numerous mantras directly and indirectly
related to the Natha Tradition. Above all of them is the Guru Mantra obtained through the proper
initiation into the Yoga Sampradaya by own Guru. Nothing in this world and beyond of it
precedes OM kara, but Guru Mantra apparently comes first, because it is through Guru Mantra
that the Primordial Word OM kara becomes revealed to a yogi as his own form (svarupa). The
Guru Mantra is a short magical spell given to a yogi by his Guru at the first stage of the initiation
into the Siddha Tradition. It is compulsory for the disciples who decided to follow ascetic path,
and can be given to lay disciples as well. However, the perfect implementation of the potential of
the Guru Mantra into practice requires complete renunciation of the world due numerous
technical considerations. This custom is not peculiarity of the Ntha Sampradaya alone, but
common amongst all other spiritual ascetic traditions of India and of Vajrayna Buddhism of
Tibet. When translated from Sanskrit, the word mantra means to control mind. When yogi
constantly repeats Guru Mantra, with full concentration, his mind become one-pointed and does
not go anywhere else. In such way, the prolonged state of mind without thinking process (mana
unmani or inner silence), required for the inauguration of the process of the spiritual
transformation, becomes spontaneously manifested. The Guru Mantra is different from all other
kinds of mantras, which chanted from time to time, and must be continuously repeated by a yogi
in the midst of his daily activities, especially in the primary stage of his sdhan. This allows to
stop all activity of mind and at the same time preserve the awareness of practitioner, at once
taking him beyond of all his limitations and difficulties to the higher spiritual realms. This verily,
Pure Awareness, transcending all Maya (worldly) attributes is the Supreme Lord himself: TM
7.2079 The Life Force (Prana) is from pervasive Awareness apart; when you know what Life

precede you. Rather, the Kingdom of God is within you and it is outside you. When you will
come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who
are the sons of the Living Father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in eternal
poverty and it is you, who are that poverty. TM 8.2389 Center on Kundalini in Muladhara that

9.2816 Break open the Kundalini Light, light the lamp within. Kindle the Light within that Light;
they who can thus brighten, the Light within the Light, may reach the feet of Him, who is
lustrous Lamp of Knowledge (Jnana). TM 9.2842 As I clung to the Lord that is Transcendental

Brighten the light within to merge in the Light (without); through Sound potency in "Aum" rouse
Prana breath within to merge in the breath without (Cosmic Life); Coursing it appropriate
upward, merge the space within into Space without; clear shall you the Shiva-State vision. The
Guru Mantra plays prominent role in the process of raising the Divine Power, known as
Kundalini Shakti. Once yoga practitioner succeed in raising Kundalini, the Goddess herself takes
all further care of his spiritual progress. Detachment from own life and sincerity in offering life
to the Lord are two main criteria, which allow to attain success in this kind of sadhana (worship).
On contrary, no further spiritual progress could become possible without the awakening of the
Divine Power, whatever activities one may do. TM 5.1482 The facade of Sat Margi is the

on the pedestal of Grace they thus get seated, then with the aid of the Holy Guru they reach the

Pure (Suddha) State that thereafter gives no birth. TM 7.1783 Intent on redemption of my body,
