Direct instruction

Teacher(s): Mayelly Monteon Subject: 8th grade math

Standard(s): Common Core, Arizona Career and College Ready Standards, ISTE Standards apply to this lesson

8.EE.A.1 Understand and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.
Key Ideas and Details :
- Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific
textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Comprehension and Collaboration :
- Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners,
building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
- Evaluate a speaker's point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric.
Knowledge Constructor :
- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Objectives (Explicit): Use Blooms verbiage and formula

Cognitive: Students will simplify the exponential expressions by using properties of integer exponents.
Behavioral: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of exponents by folding a piece of paper and
represent the folds in exponent notation.
Affective: The student will express an interest in the subject by participating in group problem solving or
by completing stations.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): An actual product /Include an explanation of how you are going to grade/grading
tool? (rubric, checklist, etc.)

Short Quiz or Unit Test: Test the knowledge of the students by having them do a couple of problems
without notes.
Sprint: Test how well they know their exponents by having them simplify as many exponent expressions
under a minute.
Worksheet: Grade the students on their right answers and the work shown.

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex): Content and Language objectives action verbs such as
write, list, highlight, etc.)

Students will write notes on the different properties of exponents that are used to simplify them.
Students will complete examples of how to simply exponential expressions
Students will color and annotate the piece of paper that they folded to represent exponents
Key vocabulary: Materials/Technology Resources to be Used:

Product Rule Individual white boards

Power Rule White board
Quotient Rule Notebooks
Negative Exponent Rule Color pencils/Crayons
Handouts

Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make RELEVENT to real life) ENGAGE/ hook the students
Tell me everything you know about exponents?

Teacher Will: Student Will: Be specific

Lecture on exponent rules Students will listens and take notes in their math
Instructional Input

notebooks

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation How will your instruction look different for those students who need
differentiation or accommodations during your instructional input/teaching?

I will have the notes printed out for those students who need accommodations that way they can fallow
along without worrying about keeping up with the writing portion of notes. Incorporate a video that explains
how to simplify exponent expressions using properties of exponents.

Teacher Will: Be specific Student Will: Be specific

Go over examples step by step that range from easy to Have students will write down examples and tell me the
difficult next step to do or which exponent rule to use.
Guided Practice

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation/Check for Understandinghow are you going to know if EACH student is
ready to move onto independent practice? And how are you going to differentiate if they do not understand?

Call on multiple students with different learning abilities when working on problems as a class to understand
where students are having difficulties. Reteach the rules or concepts that the students do not comprehend and go
over similar problems. Incorporate a video that explains exponent properties.

Teacher Will: Be specific Student Will: Be specific

I will have students get out their individual white boards Students will simplify problems that are on the board
Independent Practice

and have them simplify the problems that I put on the using their individual whiteboards. Students must show
board. I will give them about a minute or two to complete all of their work then hold up the board to show their
it. From there I can judge which rules I need to reteach. work and answer.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation How will your instruction look different for those students who need
differentiation or accommodations?

Instead of using whiteboard students can use a piece of paper and a pencil. I could walk around to check
their answers, so they wont need to raise anything in the air. Have students verbally call out answers

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections: What connections will students make to their real lives? What essential
questions will they reflect on in their closure of the lesson?

What else in the world grows exponentially? Can you think of anything else that involves exponents?

Clarifying
Why do you think we need to use the quotient rule to solve the problem?
Can you explain how you simplified the exponent?
Convergent thinking
What rule do you use when multiplying exponents?
Can you simplify exponents without like bases?
Cueing
If the expression was negative and now its positive which rule did we use?
What happens when we cross the line?
Divergent Thinking
How can exponents be useful in real life?
Can we change certain numbers into exponents to make them easier to calculate?
Evaluating
Simplify the following exponential expression x2 + x5
Use the negative exponent rule to make the following expression positive x-5

Formative and Summative Assessment

As a teacher I will use Kahoot to test my students understanding at the end of the lesson. I will create questions
regarding the rules of exponents and problems where students must simplify exponential expressions. I will give students
10-20 seconds to answer the questions. Students will use an iPad or their phones as a clicker to answer the questions.
Students must use the code I give them to sign into the quiz and enter their names as the username. At the end of the game
students will complete the rating survey. Once all of the questions have been answered as a class I will get and save the
results. From the scores I can see who did well and who needs more practice.
