Purpose:
The purpose of this learning experience is to provide the children with an opportunity to
use their fine motor skills to use tweezers to seriate colorful pompoms into a tray that has
small bowls in them. This will not only promote their fine motor skills but also promote
their seriating skills
Observation Sample:
Last week, as the children were playing at different centers during morning play, I
noticed Child A was playing at the carpet with a bin that was filled with small lego
pieces. As I sat on the carpet with her, I noticed she was making a little house that was
built with lego pieces but in groups of each color. For example, one side of the house
was green and other side was red and etc. As I noticed her, I asked her why she separated
the colors instead of using other lego pieces as well. She answered saying that each side
of the house were specific rooms in different colors. As she told me this, I asked her to
name the colors of each side of the house and she was able to name all the colors. As she
answered by saying all the colors, I told her she did an amazing job naming all the colors
she separated in the house. As I noticed this, I realized that she really liked separating
colors which gave me an idea of what activity to choose .
Discussion
Between the discussion I had with the kindergarten teacher and the ECE, they
encouraged me to provide more of fine motor activities for the children to build on their
fine motor skills.

Learning Experience: Sensory Using tweezers to separate pompom balls in a tray with many
bowls
I am going to organize this learning experience at the sensory table with 4 cupcake trays
on each side of the table, tweezers and 4 bowls of mixed pompom ball. With this
experience children are engaged in learning their colors, learn their numbers as they
count each pom pom balls that they put in the tray and gaining more fine motor skills as
they use the tweezers with their hands to pick the pompom balls and place them in
separate bowls in the cupcake tray.
Objectives:
1. The children will further develop 5.3 Fine motor skills from the Physical Domain
as they have the opportunity to use their pincer grasps as they use their finger to
hold the tweezers, use them to pick up the pompom balls and place them in
separate bowls in the cupcake trays.
2. The children will also further develop 4.10 Classifying skills from the Cognitive
Domain as the children have the opportunity to sort the pompom balls according
to their colors into the cupcake trays
3. The children will also further develop 4.5 Observing skills from the Cognitive
Domain as the children have the opportunity to observe their peers as they use the
tweezers to pick up the pompom balls and seriate them according to their colors
in the cupcake trays
Materials:
4 cupcake trays
4 bowls filled with colorful pompom balls
4 tweezers
Implementation:
1. I will set up this activity at the sensory table
2. I will provide the children with 4 cupcake trays, 4 tweezers and 4 bowls filled
with colorful pompom balls
3. I will show the children how to separate the pompom balls with the tweezers
according to their colors
 4. Throughout this activity, I will provide the children with positive statements as
they seriate the pompom balls according to their colors

Teaching Strategies:

Modeling:
As the children approach to play my activity, I will show the children how they could use
the tweezers with their hands to pick up the pompom balls and place them into separate
bowls according to their colors into the cupcake trays.

Sensory Engagement:
Throughout the activity, the children will have the opportunity to gain their first hand
experiences as they use their pincer grasps to hold the tweezers with their hands, pick up
the pompom balls with them and place into the bowls according to their colors.
