Purpose:
The purpose of this learning experience is to provide children with an opportunity of a
new experience to make their favorite objects with modeling clay. This also gives them
an opportunity to feel the difference textures between the modeling clay and play dough.
Observation Sample:
Last week, as the children were playing at different centers during morning play, I
noticed Child B was trying to make something with moon sand. As I went by her side, I
asked her what she was making and she answered saying that she was making a cake
with a few sand materials. As she said this, I told her that the cake looks amazing and
asked her what kind of cake she was making. As I asked her this, she answered saying
that she was making a chocolate cake which is her favorite. The moment she told me
this, I excitedly told her that chocolate cake is also my favorite cake. As I told her this,
she told me that shes also going to make another for me so we could both eat it together.
During this observation, I noticed the child really liked to make different objects with
moon sand which I thought of providing something different so they could make
different objects with play dough materials.

Learning Experience: Sensory Making different materials with models clay and play
dough utensils
I am organizing this sensory learning experience at the sensory table with 4 pieces of
modeling clay and a bin filled with utensils at the middle of the table for the children to
make different objects with. Im going to organize the table with four chairs so more
children have the opportunity to play with modeling clay.
Objectives:
1. The children will develop 5.3 Fine motor skills from the Physical Domain as they
have the opportunity to use their pincer and palmer grasp to shape the modeling
clay and use different utensils to make whatever they want.
2. The children will also further develop 4.5 Observing Skills from the Cognitive
Domain as they use all their senses to gather information while observing what
the activity is.
3. The children will also further develop 1.6 Cooperating Skills from the Social
Domain as the children have the opportunity to cooperate with the other children
to use the utensils within themselves.
Materials:
1 table
4 chairs
4 large pieces of modeling clay
A bin filled with utensils
Implementation:
1. I will set up pieces of modeling clay and a bin with utensils at the sensory table
with 4 chairs
2. I will invite the children to explore the modeling clay and see the difference
between the textures of modeling clay and play doh
3. I will ask some of the children some questions about how the modeling clay feels
and what they are making with the modeling clay and utensils
4. Throughout the activity, I will provide as much conversation with them to know
what they are making with modeling clay
Teaching Strategies:

Sensory Engagement:
Throughout the activity, children will gain first hand experiences as they have the
opportunity to explore how modeling clay feels. Children will also have the opportunity
to use their hands and fingers to shape the modeling clay and utensils.

Invitation:
As the children see the activity I set up at the sensory table, I will invite the children to
feel the texture of modeling clay and to make different objects with the modeling clay
and utensils.
