Module 1: Identify and Writing

Step Two:

The metaphor stated in Burkes Unending Conversation is one that may have no
answer. The individual in the excerpt walks into a conversation completely blind to the topic and
or statements that may or may not have been given before his or her arrival. This happens in
everyday life; sometimes with friends or even by ease dropping on a passing conversation on the
streets. Those whom chose to interact in such conversations must have a certain amount of
vulnerability to the unknown. The fear of rejection along with the fear of objections lingers in
ones mind as they attempt to engage in said conversation. In my personal life, I have
experienced a similar experience with friends at school. It may be a group of girls gossiping
about a cute boy in their drama class, or a group of jocks discussing their favorite NFL players.
Sometimes I would chime in while others I would remain mute. Comfortability and familiarity
has some role in these actions. If I felt as if I had enough background knowledge, I would speak
more confidently on the topic while on the other hand, if I knew very little, I would tend more to
sit back and listen to what those around me had to say. This excerpt symbolizes the average
person on a day to day basis. In the future, one may be more willing to speak to an unknown
circumstance or topic if he or she is around familiar faces rather than complete strangers. The
conversation may have no conclusion nor may a side win, but thoughts and feelings are shared
which reigns most important in life. One may have their own opinions but at the end of the day, a
true scholar holds those opinions while listening and respecting other opinions of those who
surround him or her.

Step Three:

Rhetorical Knowledge

Better understand the relationship between a writer and their piece; the structure, tone and design
and how they reflect his or her current mood or situation.

In the past, I have neglected to appreciate what tone can truly do to a piece of writing. The right
adjectives may really amplify ones paper and the message that theyre trying to construct.

Critical Reading

Better understand different forms of text and or literature. Use multiple styles of writing
including online articles and journals and compare and contrast their meanings and value.

In my Senior year of high school, my English teacher stressed the need to understanding multiple
types of literature and all the forms that it may come in. I have found that I would rather read a
physical copy of work than online. Online anyone can say anything that may or may not be true.
Composing processes

Better grasp the writing process. Trial and error. Better his or her understanding and practice of
values like brainstorming to strengthen their claims and ideas on paper.

Through taking AP level English courses during my high school career, I have learned the value
of trying again. Revising papers and essays is the only way to truly understand where you went
stray and how you can improve more for the next time.

Knowledge of Conventions

Better understand why certain genres are structured and written the way that they are. Better
grasp concepts of grammar and spelling through continuous practice.

Grammar is essential to life and the real world. I am still not perfect when it comes to grammar
and the correct punctuations, but the more I write the easier it becomes for me as writer.

Critical Reflection

Better understand ones own individual writing process and what their own strengths and
weaknesses are. Better understanding of excepting failure and using it to sculpt their writing to
the best that it can be.

Throughout high school, I have certainly formed my own style of writing. Im normally short
and to the point. I find ways to slide in my sarcastic humor, but sometimes I fall short and at the
end of the day imp the only one who really understands what Im trying to say.
