RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 2

General Procedures

A. Beginning of period-

At the start of class, students will acquire their spiral notebook journal before sitting in their

assigned seat. Students are allowed to converse with their group members at the beginning of

class but once the bell rings, the students must begin working on their bell work. The bell work

will be completed in their journals.

1. Attendance check

Due to the students being in assigned seats, I will check attendance according to the seating

chart.

2. Previously absent students

Students absent the day before can retrieve the materials from the day they missed in the absent

folder on the wall above the shelves with the journals.. The absent folders are organized by class

period to make the missed work easier to find for the student. I will also put the name of the

student on the assignment so they know exactly what to grab. If the student has an additional

questions about the assignment, they are welcome to discuss it with me after class or within an

email.

3. Tardy students

Students who arrive to class tardy are expected to sit down without interrupting the class. No

further consequences will be implemented unless the tardiness becomes a regular offense. If the

tardiness becomes a daily offense, the student must have a discussion with the teacher. If the

student does not have an understandable excuse, the student will receive a lunch detention.

4. Expected student behavior

Students will implement a positive classroom environment by treating their peers with respect
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 3

and kindness. Opinions within discussion will be regarded in a honorable way. Electronics and

socializing is only allowed during independent work time or whenever I say otherwise.

B. Out-of-room policies

Students must give a positive and respectful example of what our campus expects from its

students. When out of the room or off campus, students are still expected to implement the same

respectful behavior that they do on campus.

C. Materials and equipment

Students are required to bring at least three pencils or pens to class. If the students chooses to use

a pen, the ink must be black or blue only. Any ink color other than blue or black will result in an

assignment redo. Pencils are to be sharpened before class, any other time is inappropriate, due to

acting as a distraction. In regards to the pencils and pens, students must bring either erasers or

correction fluid for mistakes. Students must also have a folder in order to keep their homework

in one place. If the student chooses to use a three ringed binder instead of a folder, the student

does not have to purchase an additional folder. Students will be provided with loose leaf paper

and a spiral notebook journal. Any other school supply they feel is necessary, they may bring,

such as their own personal sharpener.

1. What to bring to class

Since I will provide the student with a spiral notebook and additional paper, the student is only

expected to bring a pencil/pen, some type of mistake corrector and a folder/binder to class every

day. Students must take out all three supplies when they arrive to classroom to showcase that

they are ready to begin the day.

2. Pencil sharpener

Students are allowed to sharpen their pencils before class. The student may not get up during a
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 4

lecture to sharpen their pencil because they are expected to use one of the backup pencils that

were required in their material list.

3. Student contact with teachers desk, storage, other materials

Students are not allowed behind my desk unless instructed to do so. If they need something from

my desk or my supply cabinet, they must ask before doing so. Students are only allowed to use

my materials within my classroom and may not take anything of mine with them when leaving

my classroom.

D. Ending the period

Students will receive five minutes to return their journals back into their bin that are organized

by hour and collect their things before the bell rings. I will release the table groups one at a time

so the line to put back journal isn't too congested.

Seat-Work and Instruction Procedures

A. Student attention

Students are expected to focus completely and offer their undivided attention when I am

lecturing in order to fully absorb the information necessary for passing my course. During

classroom discussion or presentations, students are expected to give their full attention to their

peers and inquire about questions after they are finished speaking. Interrupting and disrespecting

the opinion being presented by a peer will not be tolerated.

B. Student participation

Students must participate in class work whenever it is given. It is the student's choice to

participate in classroom discussion but they must participate in group work discussion. If the

student is too uncomfortable to discuss with the entire class, they will not be docked points.

C. Seat-work procedures
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 5

Students may work in groups to complete classwork, unless instructed to do otherwise. If a

student rather work on their own, they do not have to work with their group members. The

student will respectfully work alongside or with their peers without distracting them in order to

complete the assignment at hand. Students are allowed to listen to music with their cell phones

while working on classwork but they have to listen to their music at an appropriate volume. If the

student is listening to their music too loud, to the point where it is distracting others, they will be

asked to turn it down. If they do not comply, they will be asked to put their phone away. After

completing the classwork for the day, the student is allowed to work on another assignment for

another class, read, or listen to music with their cell phone.

1. Talk among student's

Students are welcome to discuss about their personal lives before the bell at the beginning of

class. After the bell rings, the students are encouraged to speak to their group members but only

about the assignment given. Personal life discussion can continue once everyone at the table has

finished the assignment. Students are not allowed to talk to their group members if everyone has

not finished due the distraction it may cause to their peers still completing the assignment.

2. Obtaining help

During classwork, I will pace around the classroom and the student may raise their hand if help

is needed. If I happen to be sitting in my desk, they are welcome to come up and ask the

question, unless I am on the phone. If I am speaking to another individual on the phone, they

must wait until I hang up to come to my desk. While lecturing, I will ask if anyone has any

questions before moving on to the next topic or slide. During this period, the student may ask

any questions they have regarding the topic that was just discussed. Students may not raise their

hand until I prompt for questions.

RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 6

3. Out of seat

The only time the student is allowed out of their seat is when they are retrieving their journal or

when they are given permission from myself.

Student Group Work

A. Use of materials and supplies

Student are expected to bring the own pencils/pens and folders to class. In regards to pencils and

pens, students are instructed to bring three to class each day, just in case. If they happened to

forget their writing utensil, they are more than welcome to ask a peer before the bell rings or they

can ask me. The first time they ask me, I will give them a pencil or a pen and allow them to keep

it. If they ask a second time, they must checkout a pencil or a pen using their ID. When they

return the pen or pencil, they will get their ID back. Students are welcome to use anything in my

supply cabinet but they must ask before doing so. They must return whatever supply they took

from the supply closet by the end of the class period.

B. Assignment of students to groups

A majority of the time, the students will work with the peers they sit next in class. If they are

working on a project with many points, the students will then get to choose their groups.

C. Student participation and behavior

Students are expected to participate with class work to the best of their ability and showcase

effort throughout the assignment. In regards to group work, the students will be assigned roles so

each group member can participate equally. Students will not shame their peers if they do not

agree with the idea being presented. As a group, they will maturely discuss how they want the

project to look and all group members must agree before actually beginning the project.

Communication amongst the group must remain open and appropriate. Students must respond to
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 7

their group members in a timely matter. At the end of the project, the student will complete a

peer review survey so I can know if the work was distributed equally amongst the group. If

students feel as though the group is not getting along during the beginning of the project, the

students can come talk to me and we can discuss a possible solution.

Miscellaneous

A. Signals

When a student is misbehaving in class, they will get a nonverbal signal. This signal includes me

making eye contact with them and raising my hand to represent the number one, this will stand

for first warning. I will do the same nonverbal signal, but raising my hand to represent a number

two, for their second offense. This will represent that we are having a discussion after class. The

third nonverbal signal is in the form of raising my hand to represent a number three, but the

student will move remove themselves into the hallway until I can go outside and have a

conversation with them. If the student needs to go to the restroom, go get a drink or go to the

nurse during lecture, they must raise their hand and show a fist. I will make eye contact and nod,

letting them know that they may leave the classroom.

B. Fire and disaster drills

For fire drills, students will leave the class in a line and remain quiet to remove distractions

which may cause students to get separated from the group. For lockdown drills, students will

remain quiet until the end of the lockdown drill. They will continue to follow any other

regulations put in place by the school.

C. Guests in the Classroom

Students will clap when a guest enters the room as a way to signal to the student that if they are

doing anything inappropriate, it needs to stop immediately, while also making the guest feel
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 8

important. Students will stay quiet as I converse with the guest and use the time to double check

their notes or continue working on their assignment.

E. Split Lunch Period

Students are welcome to leave their backpacks in my room during lunch. My door will be open if

the students have any questions they would like to ask.

(Emmer and Evertson, 2006, p. 55-64).

Academic

A. Bell work

Students will be given five minutes to complete three questions based on the content from the

day before. The questions will be lower tier Blooms taxonomy questions that are based on

memorization. Each question is worth one point, which are in the form of participation points.

The sentences must be complete in order to receive full points. The students will complete their

bell work in their journals, which they will obtain at the beginning of class.

B. Note Taking

Students will be given note packets that will highlight the most important topics within the unit

in the form of headers. The student will complete their notes according to the lecture and at the

end of the unit, they will have a complete study guide for the information needed for the unit

assessment. The students will keep their notes in their folders in order for better organization.

C. Extra Credit

Students have the opportunity to complete extra credit throughout the entire year. At anytime

during the semester, they can watch a movie based on a historic event and then write a three

paragraph essay explaining what the movie is about, how accurately it portrays the certain event

in history and their opinion on the movie. They can turn in a maximum amount of three per
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 9

semester. Each is worth 15 points.

D. Paper Format

The format of papers must be in APA format with proper footnotes and citations. Credit must be

given for in text citations or paraphrasing. The papers must have a header page and an abstract.

E. Tutoring

Tutoring will be made available two times a week, once before school and once after. If a student

is unable to make either of those tutoring sessions, they can set up a personal session with me as

needed. Tutoring sessions will be open for two hours at the most. Students must have

transportation set up before coming to tutoring if they are attending the session after school.

F. Turning in work

Classwork will be turned in after class ends. The table groups will leave their assignments in a

pile and I will pick them up after the bell rings. Classwork is to be done within the class period

so students are expected to finish it before they leave the class. If the student does not finish the

class assignment, the student must take it home for homework and it is due the next class day.

The student will be docked five points for not completing it in class. All other homework,

outside of uncompleted classwork, will be turned in online through Edmodo by 11:59pm on the

day it is due.

G. Grading

The student has potential to earn full points if turned in on time, as long as they follow the rubric

or assignment instructions. Each rubric and assignment will have clear and concise instructions

so the students knows exactly what is needed for a 100%. I will also explain the instructions

verbally for students that are auditory learners. If the student received less than a 70% on any
RUNNING HEAD: CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 10

assignment, the student can redo the assignment for a better grade as long as the points were not

missed due to turning the assignment in late.

Parent Communication

A. Updates

Parents will receive an end of the week update on how their student is doing with academics and

behavior through the App, Classroom Dojo. The weekly update will automatically send to each

parent on Friday and if they have any questions regarding the update, they are welcome to call or

email me.

B. Monthly Newsletters

Parents and guardians will receive a monthly newsletter in person and also through email

outlining what the class is going over for the upcoming month.

C. Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parents and guardians of the students will have a meeting with me once a month to discuss in

person how the student is doing in my class. If the parent or guardian wishes to have more than

one meeting a month, they are encouraged to email me so the both of us can figure out a time to

meet again.

D. Phone Calls Home

Phone calls to parents and guardians will be both negative and positive. For every negative

phone call I have to make based on a student's behavior or academics, I will make a positive

phone call as well. Within the positive phone call, I will discuss with the parents or guardians the

improvements the student has been making with their behavior or academics, even if it is only a

single assignment or miniscule showcase of positive behavior.
