Grade and Topic: 12th Grade-Physical Education Length of Lesson: Unit Length (No time frame)

Mentor Teacher: Jennifer Townes School: University of Memphis - IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Objectives fall under COMPONENT 3: FITNESS AND PHYSICAL ACTIVIY (FPA) in the Tennessee
State Physical Education standards. Students will understand and display the value of physical fitness
and health.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:

Given a health related topic, the student will create a website promoting health and concerns about their
topic with proper information, research, and fluency.
Given the topic, students will conduct thorough research and create a clear and concise informational
website.
Using a podcast, the student will promote their research and website with pride and intelligence of the
subject.
After completing the assignments, students will present their website to peers, faculty, and health
professionals.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

FPA.1 Explain how health-related components of fitness impact overall health status (i.e., body
composition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility).

ISTE Standard- Innovative Designer: Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to
identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. 4b. Students select and use
digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.

ISTE Standard: Research and information fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and
use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize,
and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information
sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks d. Process data and report result

MATERIALS:

Access to internet and Weebly account for website creation

Access to computers for research
Access to Graphic Organizer software for planning
Audio Recorders for podcast section
Student checklist
Presentation space with access to projector and computers

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

The students will conduct research on a health related topic of their choice that is approved by the
instructor. This will allow students to have a choice of learning and allow them to remain engaged.
Language that must be addressed for this lesson is basic movement concepts that need to be followed
during fitness exercises (knees tracking over ankles, neutral spine position, control of breathing, etc.)
This lesson will build off of our previous lessons of understanding the importance of our health and
current topics and trends that effect our worlds health today.
This lesson can be built off of by having students present their research and opinions in a clear and well
thought out manner using the website application and podcast.
Students will have the opportunity to submit their work to health professionals facilitated by the
instructor and allow for professional feedback on their research.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:

Introduce students to the unit project that they will participate in over the entire semester.
Explain that this project will be done in addition to our normal daily lessons and each day the students
will receive a certain amount of time to work on their project.
Ask students to name a health related topic that means a lot to them. Why does this mean a lot to
you? If you could help would you?
Ask them, do you think that a high schooler like yourself can make a difference in these health
related topics that our world is struggling with? What are some ways we can achieve this?
Allow students to create a list of three topics that they would like to research.

Procedures:

Students will spend the remainder of the first class researching (using the computer or other
internet device) their three topics to narrow down their decision to one topic. (Must be approved by the
instructor)
Each student will then set up their Weebly account and Graphic organizer software account in
order to begin planning and exploring the website design options.
Through the course of the unit the student will have to submit three assignments: Graphic
Organizer with research and information for their website, a finished website, and a podcast that
introduces and explains why their topic is so important.
These assignments will have specific due dates throughout the semester.
Students with similar topics and trends will be encouraged to work with one another to discuss
their issue. Students are encouraged to interact with other students to receive feedback.
Website will have a rubric that must be followed before presenting to the class.

Presentation:

Students will provide podcast files to be compiled into one folder where students, faculty, and
professionals can listen to the topics and trends that will be presented. This will be presented prior to
website presentation day
Students will then be required to present their website and show its functionality to peers,
faculty, and professionals in a conference type setting. Multiple stations around the room with viewers
walking around and asking questions.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

During the unit, students will be presented with the research paper checklist that is attached. Each
student must review their project and work and make sure that all items are being checked off of that
list.
The students will have to adhere to the website rubric attached to this lesson plan. Please see website
rubric.

MODIFICATIONS:
Modifications will be made for any student who is struggling with the concepts presented in class. This
lesson will also allow for the peer student to assist the struggling student in areas needed. Instructor
support will also be available whenever needed.
