Player Leg Maintenance

Muscle tightness, soreness, stiffness are a part of playing sport.

No matter what the sport, professional or amateur, or even just weekend

warrior, the athlete or players health and safety should be paramount.

As a player continues with their training and competing through a season or

games, tightness, soreness and stiffness become something to live with and
have to be worked through.

Player fatigue caused by these can impact on after the competition (Immediate
post-event) in a long recovery time (Post-event) and in their long term health
in both private and sporting lives.

The legs in sport

The legs are important in most sports and are used and abused at every level,
and while they are involved, every player takes risks with them while they are
on the field, track or arena and competing or simply training.

It is in everyones interests to keep the legs maintained at optimum functional

levels so that a sporting career whether at professional or amateur level can
last as long as possible.

Working with fatigued legs at the immediate post event and post event stages
of after training or competition and keeping them functional while recovery is
still taking place can only benefit players, management and the all important
contributing supporters and the sport they are in.

The majority of recovery takes place at the micro-cellular level in the muscles
and this is beyond the ability of most forms of modalities to increase the rate
of repair in this area however it may be possible to guide the body by working
with it rather than forcing the body to cooperate by working on it.

By working with the body breaking into the bodys own recovery processes is
avoided.

It also benefits the competitors private lives and lifts the quality of their
sporting performance by keeping the legs mobile and functional while recovery
takes place.

Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is a system developed for extreme

runners and walkers and been tested at many events around the world

Leg Abuse

All sports people abuse their legs, there are many ways in which they try to
deal with them but there is no standard for them to aim for or method they
can use which is simple, efficient and effective that anyone can use.
Elite Athletes

Elite athletes may have their own physiotherapists, masseurs, dieticians and associated
people to reach and maintain their optimum performance.

They also have their countries sports institutes or whatever organisation to give them the
best ways to maintain their place at the top of their sport.

They have the latest information made available to them.

The Majority of Athletes

To see how the majority of athletes fare, look at the start of any marathon and you will see
a mass of people numbered in their thousands

According to www.statista.com there were 65.05 million runners in the US in 2017.

Collectively the amount of suffering and lost production in work hours must be staggering as
people have problems walking and working after an event

Each individual has probably bought the best equipment they can afford, right down to their
feet in the best running shoes based on reviews, they have spent much time training for this
event, studied all the guides on running techniques and just trained, trained, trained.

Each of them is a running legend in their own mind, they are a running machine, but without
the backup of the elite and professional athletes.

Having worked at marathons and ultra long distance marathons I know there are never
enough trained people to help the majority of entrants to get their legs moving after an
event and the muscles have cooled down and stiffened.

I have seen the pain these people are going through and will go through for the next few
weeks until the legs are working normally.

Something is missing

Very few runners and walkers will be able to access assistance at the finish of
the marathon because many of them they will be still out there until the cut
off point and most of the leg recovery staff will have gone home fatigued by
then
When they have gone, they leave the very sore and sorry athletes to their own devices to
get home if they can move, because once they finish exhausted and sit down the muscle
stiffness sets in as the body starts its repair processes.

They are left to their own devices-will they return next year?
Many will be lost because the pain they endured long after the event will remain with them
and they will say they have done what they set out to do but the after effects to their
professional and family life was too disruptive.

Many people will have been lost to sport on their first attempt because they didnt have the
knowledge needed to relieve their after event suffering

The knowledge to relieve some of the suffering they have can set them free!

The Basic Knowledge to breaking the chains that bind in leg maintenance in
sport

When the legs have been used too hard during an event (as most people do) they do not
have any knowledge of how to get them moving again!

This can be approached in 2 phases

Phase 1 Immediate Post Event

Phase 2 Post Event

Immediate Post Event (Acute time of the event)-the time immediately after
an event finishes when the body has set in motion its self
healing processes at micro-cellular levels.
The body basically shuts down so it can repair; the legs need first
aid at this point! (They need running repairs)

When the legs have been pushed too far and too fast the muscles have been made ANGRY.
They have done their job and got you through the game and now need their own time calm
down to heal. This timing can be unfortunate as the sportsperson now has to get up and
start walking again so they can even get home.

The legs have gone dysfunctional and will not work properly for the next few weeks there
are things you can do in the post event phase
This is when the legs need immediate help to get going again and start their way to
becoming functional again.

Post event-The point when the sports person has arrived home and the
suffering really starts in the lead up to full recovery.

Stiffness has set in, for the next few days or weeks it will be hard to climb stairs, get
dressed, and walk anywhere until the body reaches full recovery

Running Repairs and Leg Maintenance

If a player is taking part in a seasonal sport such as soccer, rugby, basketball,

netball the legs dont get chance to recover properly as they are always in
acute stage of muscle repair and so performance drops off as the season
continues and injury becomes more prevalent.

The more this happens the more aggressive the treatment becomes.

Ultra Marathon or Extreme Running and Walking

This is a sport that can be studied and lessons can be learned from the people
who literally put their bodies on the line.
Ultra marathon is any distance over marathon, (26.2 miles or 42.195 kilometres) and there
are no limits.

There has been very little research done in this sport because the resources and
commitment to attend an ultra is so great, a 24 hour event for instance the starting gun
goes off and the finish gun 24 hours later.

In the case of Tony Mangan the gun went off at the start of the Dublin Marathon and the
finish of the race for him finished 4 years and 50,000 kilometres later at the end of the
Dublin Marathon.

Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation was developed for extreme runners and walkers
because conventional work was too cumbersome and not adaptable for the extreme
conditions that they run and live in.

Lack of water across deserts, lack of washing facilities, no room for massage tables, oil and
towels, in cold conditions taking the clothes off to be rubbed with oil while just covered with
a towel can lead to hypothermia.

In a footrace time and distance are everything to the runner/walker and to use conventional
systems take too long because they need to be undressed to be worked on and this can take
15-20 minutes to do that is 2 or 3 kilometres if going for a personal best or world record.

Wholistic Manual Muscle Relaxation has been tried and tested at both marathon and ultra
marathon levels at many events across continents and around the world runners and
walkers over many years.

A view about legs made ANGRY by overuse

When you run, walk, play or take part in any sport, and the muscles get tight,
stiff and sore, the legs are not injured!

The muscles have been made angry by their use and abuse
They are fatigued, but there is usually basically nothing wrong with them that cant be
healed by the body itself, and most of it comes from the micro-cellular level of repair.

They do need some first aid at this stage and this should always be light work to avoid
breaking into the repair work that the body is doing.

If you need any deep work doing this can be done after the immediate post event, and post
event stages when healing is well underway.

Injury can be inflicted in sport by impact (extrinsic) falling, being pushed over, or (intrinsic) a
blister making you walk badly, or wearing a pair of ill fitting shoes altering the gait and
putting stress on the muscles.

These may need looking at by a medical professional to sort out.

Legs that are not injured but fatigued and ANGRY dont need to have the pain receptors
stimulated more by rubbing them even with oil.

They need calming down

The legs are fresh at the start of

the event and all the systems are
working together

As tightness, soreness and fatigue

sets in the systems all separate
leading to uncoordinated
movement

When the event is finished

stiffness sets in as the body repair
sets in

Working on the legs alone will

not bring it all back together but
working with the whole body may

This may be achieved by working with the whole body as one unit

When is a massage not a massage?

When it is Wholistic light Manual Muscle Relaxation!
Having worked at many events and being the only person who turns up to help the runners
and walkers and look after the whole event.

At a 24 hour run/walk there was a discussion amongst some of them that not to come to me
because I didnt do massage as they expected because I didnt do rubbing.

This is true, because I was doing Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation which doesnt
use rubbing because it works with the whole body.

Looked at theirs and my own point of view

These runners and walkers were inexperienced at doing this event and had preconceived
ideas on what they should have done in a recovery area.

I was one person looking after 40 plus entrants on an as and when needed basis for 24
hours event so people push themselves over the top to break their personal best or an elite
runner/walker may be going for a country or world record.

Time on the track is distance time off it is wasted, so I have to get the athlete back on track
as fast as I can, a way to do this is to cut out wasted movement and reduce the time on the
massage table, also by doing this I save myself time and energy so that I can fit in more
people who need help because I reduce my own fatigue levels.

Disadvantages of working conventionally for the athletes

Time Lost
Getting undressed
Standing around with the muscles getting cold and stiff
Waiting in a line getting cold

Oil going on the legs (road grit can carry bacteria and the paste generated can force the
grit into the skin making them very sick

(The immune system is lowered when it is put under stress)

The athlete may go into hypothermia with cold wind blowing over their partially
unclothed body

Working too deeply into the muscles during the during the immediate Post Event and Post
Event phases can cause injury

What does Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation mean for the health
and safety of sports players amateur and professional?
It means that when an event ends or after a heavy training session they can get into helping
their body in the Immediate Post Event stage start recovering without breaking into the
bodys own repair processes.

The legs can be taken back towards functional movement with minimal input and pain and
the least inconvenience because you will be working with the body not on it.

It means taking control of your own repair work with running repairs being done as
needed without having to wait in a long line for and empty table in the recovery
area.
It means getting back to training and ready for the next event
It means your family, friends, or whoever can be your support crew and not have
to put up with the moans and groans as you try to stand up or climb stairs or put
your pants on!
It means that your sports performance can stay for longer
It means the person who recovers faster can get the edge over the competition
longer!

Advantages of working with Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation

Reduced downtime

No Undressing
No oil used
Covered with a blanket to reduce heat loss and hypothermia
Works with the muscles while they are warm and self healing before
stiffness sets in

Leg maintenance
When the legs have been used and abused and are sore stiff and exhausted they are not
usually injured.

All that is needed is to maintain the legs in functional movement so you can be back to your
normal activities until the legs have fully recovered.

The legs can be dealt with using a simple running repairs system which guides them into
doing what you want rather than forcing them into functionality to make them keep moving
and breaking into the bodys own recovery processes and delaying recovery.

The body is a single unit and is connected through its systems from the feet
to the head, the long term effects of leg dysfunction can affect the long term
health and performance of the player.
Really no matter what you do to them, the muscle tissues are being recovered at micro-
cellular level. If you use something that is too harsh on the muscles you can break into the
bodies healing processes delaying recovery for longer.

There is no actual injury to the legs to deal with so the athlete needs no medical assistance
except to get dehydration or other medical problems that have surfaced during the event
looked at.

Conventional types of modalities Wholistic Light Manual Muscle

need many things to get them to Relaxation differs from conventional
work on helping the athlete. systems because it works WITH the
body systems.
It works ON the muscles
This makes it more user friendly
This makes them unwieldy to use in because there is almost no

Michael Gillan is an Wholistic Legs Maintenance Practitioner

from Australia who works with Endurance or Extreme Athletes
in long distance running and walking since 1993

Michael developed Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation

in 1995 at the Colac 6 day (Australia) running and walking
event and has been using it in various fields and events since.

These include the 1996 Nanango 1000 Mile (1600 kilometre) 16 day event in Queensland
Australia, part of Jesper Olsens world run 1 in Victoria www.worldrun.org and Tony
Mangans record around the world 50,000 kilometre run

He was with Tony from Melbourne to Darwin Australia www.theworldjog.com and more
recently as part of his around the world walk from Perth to Sydney for 2500 kilometres
www.myworlwalk.com

Light Manual Muscle Relaxation which is a system he developed in 1995 and is different
from conventional legs maintenance because it works with the legs and not on them.

This makes it more effective to use for people who dont have the knowledge and skills
needed for conventional massage systems.

It doesnt rely on the hand skills and strokes as does massage so needs no oil to prevent skin
friction, it needs no undressing which means that it is appropriate to use in conditions
where conventional massage is too restrictive.

If anyone was planning to walk or run around the world or across continents Michael would
be the one that you would want to have with you because of his extensive experience being
out there in the wild country and helping to keep the runners and walkers on track as
smoothly as possible.

Michael does workshops on Wholistic Light Michael was also involved in a run across
America in 2011 for Natural Medicine from San Francisco to Bridgeport Conn.

Conclusion
While much of Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is based on Empirical Evidence
the physiology of it is based on

Guyton-Textbook of Medical Physiology eighth edition-1991 W.B. Saunders Company-ISBN

0-726-3994-0
Travell J. Rinzler S.H. The Myofascial Genesis of Pain Post Grad Med. 1952
Modern Treatment for Lymphoedema Casley-smith Judith & Casley-Smith J.R. 5th edition
Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology-Seeley Stephens and Tate-Mosby Year Book ISBN 0-
8016-0227-0
Textbook of medical Physiology (Physiology- fourth edition-Robert M. Berne, Mathew N.
Levy, Bruce M. Koeppen, Bruce A. Stanton-Mosby ISBN 0-8151-0952-0)

The reason for the lack of evidence based data in extreme running and walking is because of
the lack of suitably qualified medical people who find it difficult to commit to such long
periods.
The only study I know of was back in 1967 at the Nanango 1000 miles event by the
Australian Sports Institute and that was only on 1 runner.

This means that the reader is thrown back on the fact that every year since its development,
Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation has been tested somewhere to the limits of the
athletes themselves who unselfishly deliver their bodies and lay themselves on the line in the
cause of Empirical Evidence.

(They do not really have much choice because all of the other Massage Therapists have either
not turned up or gone home after a few hours) citing fatigue from working on the athletes
conventionally)

From their point of view the most people they can work on in a 24 hour period non-stop
would be 8 at about 1 -2 hours per person because the work is so heavy and draining.

On the other hand because I work with the body and bypass all the hard work that is so
draining I can work and have breaks and some rest and work with 15-20 people in a 24 hour
event. (And still help some of them who cant walk to get their legs moving again so they can
go home)

No matter the sport, legs maintenance is important for the health and safety of athletes and
their ultimate performance and the best place to learn about this is at long distance events
where people are consistently pushing their physical and mental boundaries on a daily basis.

If only because of the fact that Wholistic Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is fast simple
effective needs no undressing or equipment and is easy to learn makes it a must have tool for
ongoing legs maintenance and running repairs for both professional and amateur athletes.
