Present simple
Present continuous
Past simple
Regular form: Suj. + ver-ed The unions rejected the governments offer
Irregular form: Suj + mirar tabla Free FM began broadcasting one month
ago
Did you listen to the news this morning? No. I didnt have the radio
on.
The magazine published the article in December
- Cosas que ocurrieron regularmente en el pasado
Journalists filed their reports by pone
After, afterwards, ago, before, finally, for, in, then, yesterday, last (week, day, night)
Present perfect
Past simple:
o Did you eat breakfast this morning? Ya no es por la maana
o I passed my driving test earlier this week. El examen de conducir se
termin a principios de esta semana.
o I went France last year. Last year ha terminado, ahora es este ao (this
year)
o They saw the new Batman movie yesterday. Yesterday fue ayer y ya ha
terminado, hoy (today) es el presente.
Present perfect:
o Have you eaten breakfast yet this morning? En este caso la maana an
no ha terminado.
o I have passed my driving test at last!
o I have been in France in the last year. In the last year significa en el ao
hasta la fecha.
o They have seen the new Barman movie. Esto es an cierto en el presente
No podemos decir I have gone to France last year o They have seen a movie
yesterday.
Suj. + have/has + been + verb-ing.
interrumpido. They have been working on the problem all week.
Tambin se usan already, almost, always, just, often, nearly, never/ever, yet
(interrogativos y negativos). Siempre se pone entre have y been.
Past perfect
Form (Forma)
participio pasado. El verbo auxiliar estar en pasado.
I, you, he, she, it, we, they had Id, youd, hed, shed, itd, wed, theyd studied, visited, worked
Structure (Estructura)
Ejemplos:
I had [Id] visited the Louvre before, so I knew where the Mona Lisa was.
They had [Theyd] studied English before they went to London. (Haban estudiado ingls antes de
irse a Londres.)
Henry changed careers because he had [hed] worked as an accountant for many years and was
bored.
aburrido.)
I had not [hadnt] visited the Louvre before so I didnt know where the Mona Lisa was. (No
They had not [hadnt] studied English before they went to London. (No haban estudiado ingls
antes de irse a Londres.)
Henry changed careers even though he had not [hadnt] worked as an accountant for
Ejemplos:
How did you know where the Mona Lisa was? Had you visited the Louvre before? (Cmo sabas
dnde estaba la Mona Lisa? Habas visitado el Museo del Louvre antes?)
Had they studied English before they went to London? (Haban estudiado ingls antes de irse a
Londres?)
Had Henry worked as an accountant for long before he changed careers? (Henry haba trabajado
Ejemplos:
Id read the book before I saw the movie.
Donna had just left when you called. (Donna haba salido justo cuando llamaste.)
Had you ever flown before the trip to France? (Alguna vez habas volado antes del viaje a Francia?)
Ejemplos:
I had already woken up when the alarm clock rang at 7am. (Ya me haba despertado cuando son el
despertador a las 7.)
He hadnt been to France before the trip in 2008.
pasado.
Ejemplos:
She had only owned one car before she bought her new BMW. (Haba tenido un coche antes de que
compr su nuevo BMW.)
Id been depressed for a long time before I changed jobs.

Ejemplos:
Uses (Usos)
When y while sealan el uso del pasado simple y continuo.
de while.
Ejemplos:
Jose called while I was watching the news. (Jose llam mientras estaba mirando las noticias.)
He was walking to work when he fell.
Was it raining when you left? (Estaba lloviendo cuando te fuiste?)
Ejemplos:
Paula wasnt living in Spain in 2005.
We were still working at 10 oclock last night.
pasado.
Ejemplos:
My son was reading while I was cooking. (Mi hijo estaba leyendo mientras que yo estaba cocinando.)
They were talking very loudly while we were trying to watch the movie.
Used to
utilizar used to como adjetivo.
To used to (Soler)
El verbo modal used to se emplea para indicar algo que ocurra o sucedera en el pasado de
manera habitual.
Structure (Estructura)
Ejemplos:
We used to go to the beach every summer when I was young. (Cuando era joven solamos
ir a la playa cada verano.)
He used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, but he quit last year.
I used to like mushrooms, but not anymore.
There used to be a great restaurant here, but it closed a few years ago. (Haba un gran
restaurante aqu, pero cerr hace unos aos.)
Ejemplos:
Didnt he use to smoke a lot? (l sola fumar mucho, no?)
Did you use to live here? (Vivas aqu antes?)
Did they use to go to the beach in the summers?
Ejemplos:
We usually go to the beach every summer. (Solemos ir a la playa cada verano.)
He normally smokes a pack of cigarettes every day. (Normalmente l fuma un paquete de
cigarrillos cada da.)
They usually play football on the weekends.
Tampoco
Ejemplos:
When I was young, we would go to the beach every summer. (Cuando era joven solamos ir
a la playa cada verano.)
At the university, they would play football every weekend. (En la universidad, ellos solan
jugar a ftbol cada fin de semana.)
He would smoke a lot.
When I was young we wouldnt go to the beach every summer.
Cuando to be used
Ejemplos:
Shes used to living alone. (Ella est acostumbrada a vivir sola.)
We werent used to traveling a lot. (No estbamos acostumbrados a viajar mucho.)
Im not used to this cold weather. (No estoy acostumbrado a este fro.)
Nota: Cuando utilizamos el verbo get en vez de be indica el proceso de familiarizarse con algo.
Ver la leccin del verbo to get para ms informacin sobre este verbo.
Ejemplos:
They divorced over 2 years ago. She has gotten used to living alone. (Se divorciaron
hace ms de 2 aos. Ella se ha acostumbrado a vivir sola.)
With this new job I am getting used to traveling a lot. (Con este nuevo trabajo me estoy
acostumbrando a viajar mucho.)
You need to get used to this cold weather if you are going to live here. (Necesitas
acostumbrarte a este fro si vas a vivir aqu.)
Future
Future: Will
Structure (Estructura)

She will not [wont] arrive late. (No llegar tarde.)
They will not [wont] be happy to see you. (No estarn felices de verte.)
Ejemplos:
Future: Going to
Structure (Estructura)
Ejemplos:
I am going to call you tonight. (Voy a llamarte esta noche.)
She is going to arrive late. (Va a llegar tarde.)
They are going to be happy to see you. (Van a estar felices de verte.)
Ejemplos:
I am not going to call you tonight. (No voy a llamarte esta noche.)
She is not going to arrive late. (No va a llegar tarde.)
They are not going to be happy to see you. (No van a estar felices de verte.)
Ejemplos:
Ejemplos:
I am about to leave. (Estoy a punto de irme.)
The concert is about to begin. (El concierto est a punto de comenzar.)
Uses (Usos)
Ejemplos:
When I am president, I will lower taxes. (Cuando sea presidente, bajar los impuestos.)
He promises he will call when he arrives. (Le prometi llamar cuando llegue.)
Ejemplos:
We are going to have a party tonight. (Vamos a dar una fiesta esta noche.)
Richard is going to take an English class.
Are Peter and David going to play football later? (Vas a jugar a ftbol luego?)
4. Se puede usar will o going to para predicciones porque el hablante no tiene control sobre
el futuro.
Ejemplos:
It will be a great party. / It is going to be a great party. (Ser una fiesta genial.)
It wont rain. / It is not going to rain.
Ejemplos:
Sarah is arriving tonight. (Sarah llega esta noche.)
I am going to the doctor this afternoon. (Voy al mdico esta tarde.)
Ejemplos:
The party starts at 9pm. (La fiesta empieza a las 21h.)
The train leaves at 10am. (El tren sale a las 10h.)
Conditional
pasiva.
Ejemplos:
La voz activa
La voz pasiva
All of the cookies were eaten. (Todas las galletas fueron comidas.)
Se forma la voz pasiva con el verbo auxiliar to be y el participio pasado del verbo.
Ejemplos:
The speech is written for the president. (El discurso est escrito para el presidente.)
The house was built in 1975. (La casa fue construida en 1975.)
My wallet has been stolen. (Ha sido robada mi cartera.)
The room will be cleaned while we are out.
2. El verbo principal se sustituye por el auxiliar to be, en su mismo tiempo, junto al verbo
principal en participio.
Ejemplos:
La voz activa:
La voz pasiva:
The book was written by Mark Twain. (El libro fue escrito por Mark Twain.)
La voz activa:
The housekeeper will clean the room. (La ama de casa limpiar la habitacin.)
La voz pasiva:
The room will be cleaned by the housekeeper.
Ejemplos:
The letter was delivered yesterday. (La carta fue entregada ayer.)
A mistake was made.
Ejemplos:
I am going to London next week, she said.
Do you have a pen I could borrow, he asked. (Tienes un bolgrafo que puedas prestarme?, l
pregunt.)
Alice said, I love to dance. (Alice dijo, Me encanta bailar.)
Chris asked, Would you like to have dinner with me tomorrow night? (Chris pregunt, Te
A continuacin
persona.

Ejemplos:
Im 30 years old, she said. She said she is 30 years old.
Dave said, Kelly is sick. Dave said Kelly is sick.
We are going to Tokyo next week, they said. They said they are goingto
Tokyo next week.

principal.
Los verbos modales expresan modalidad. Pueden expresar habilidad, posibilidad, necesidad u otra
condicin.

Ejemplos:

Could you help me? (Podras ayudarme?)
Could I be wrong? (Podra estar equivocado?)
Nota: Se usa could en frases condicionales.

So and such
Utilizamos so (tan, as, entonces) y such (semejante, tal, tan, tanto) para aadir nfasis, mostrar
So
Ejemplos:
I have been working since 7am this morning.
maana. Estoy tan cansada!)
Why are you driving so fast? (Por qu ests conduciendo tan rpido?)
Kate is so beautiful. I cant believe shes single! (Kate es tan hermosa. No puedo creer que est
soltera!)
My daughter studied so hard for her exam.
Podemos utilizar los cuantificadores (many, much, little, etc.) con so para indicar extremos
So much o so many pueden ser
traducidos tambin como tantos en espaol.
Ejemplos:
Podemos utilizar so con that para mostrar resultados o consecuencias. En general, el uso de
that es opcional.
Ejemplos:
The music was so loud that I couldnt hear my own voice. (La msica era tan fuerte que no poda or
mi propia voz.)
He was driving so fast that he had an accident.
My son studied so hard that he received the best grade in the class.
Such
Como con so, utilizamos such con adjetivos para mostrar extremos. A diferencia de so,
Ejemplos:
I am so lucky. I have such wonderful friends! (Tengo tanta suerte. Tengo amigos tan maravillosos!)
That is such a pretty dress! You should wear it more often. (Este vestido es tan bonito! Debera
llevarlo ms a menudo.)
It is such a beautiful day (Que da tan bonito!)
resultado.
Ejemplos:
It was such a beautiful day that we decided to go to the beach. (Fue un da tan bonito que decidimos
ir a la playa.)
Dave has such a small car that he doesnt have to spend much money on gas.(Dave tiene un coche
It was such a good meal that we made it again the next night. (Era una comida tan buena que la
hicimos otra vez la siguiente noche.)
Ejemplos:
I never liked Andy. He is such a jerk! (Nunca me ha gustado Andy. Es una idiota!)
You are such a clown! Are you ever serious? (Eres un payaso. Jams ests serio?)
Cuando such est seguido directamente por un sustantivo, such significa un tipo de.
Ejemplos:
I have never seen such architecture before. (Nunca he visto tal arquitectura antes.)
We very rarely listen to such music. (Muy raramente escuchamos tal msica.)
Directs or indirects questions
Direct question: cuando el hablante directamente pregunta una cosa What time it
is?
what time it is?
conocemos. Ejemplos de cmo empezar una pregunta es: Could you tell me
Do you have any idea Do you know I was wondering Id like to know Is
there any chance Would it be possible...
interrogacin (?). Where is the post office? I was wondering where the post office
is. / How did you do that? Id like to know how you did that. Pero al no haber
auxiliar los verbos cambian. When does the postman usually arrive? Do you have
any idea when the postman usually arrives? / Where did you buy that shirt? Can
you tell me where you bought that shirt?
propio verbo. A las preguntas de s o no se les tiene que aadir if o whether: Does
Charles like olives Do you know if Charles likes Olive? / Is she from Argentina?
Do you have any idea whether she is from Argentina (or not)?
Wh- questions
Who gave you my number?
long, often, powerful, tall, wide. Los ms comunes son:
Relative clauses

Delexical Verbs
Have

Each
Ejemplos:
Each student will receive a different theme for their final project.
We each took turns making dinner while our mother was away.

Ejemplos:
Each of them is expected to do well on the exam.
Each of his sisters received a new car for their graduation, so he expects one
too.
