MODELING PERSONAL

The Den of Eden

The Den of Eden is located in a poor area, which affects the health of the employees. The

water is not clean, access to healthy food is difficult; leading to obesity, diabetes, and depression.

Food deserts are extremely influential to the population as well. When the food isnt easily

accessible, everything else falls apart. For example, the economy is failing, and people take what

jobs they can. The company is located in Detroit, and has no health insurance, and does not

promote health or wellness in the company.

Change Agent

A change agent would need to take action to help get this company back on track. The

change agent would become the advocate and promote a healthy change. Brianne would take on

the task of promoting the company providing health insurance, eating healthy; whether it be

bringing healthy lunch to work or if there is a cafeteria at work or vending machines, offering

healthy options to purchase. Brianne would find a safe zone or lounge area for employees to

destress. Work can be stressful and with all the disasters going on, things at home or outside of

work, such as health, could leak into worklife. Having a safe zone/lounge would be great for

employees to take a break and destress. This area would consist of relaxing music, comfortable

chairs, maybe a small water fountain, and fruits to snack on. This would boost morale and help

create a more comfortable work place. Change can be scary, though if all employees can keep an

open mind, it could turn into something great. Jen Overbeck states in paragraph five, An

effective strategy for creating change requires several elements, but one of the most important is

to convince people to alter their attitudesto move from rejection to openness, at least, or

embrace, at best. If you can create change in peoples attitudes, its much easier to change their

behavior (2015).

Figure 1. Theory at a Glance table four found within our reading for this lesson, has a

wonderful outline provided for producing behavior modification and controls for a better

understanding of what ones mind processes when confronted, with the change needed for the

employee factor.

This would lead the employed to a better understanding of how they can be a positive

force for good and influence the lives within this community. Implementing this change would

also need a model and once again Theory at a Glance has compiled a five step program in

implementing these changes slowly by Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action

and Maintenance. Reinforcing the above in anticipation of perceived behavioral traits one would

have in developing a Healthy Environment.

Figure 2. Theory at a Glance table three. A demonstration and written in depth look at

what steps taken can do for the environment described by colleagues.

The Healthy Environment that would be ideal for this project is the HBM or Health

Belief Model. As outlined in our reading for lesson two the model touches six main areas of

focus that once implemented on a employee level can be translated to those we have set out to

help in the community. Perceived Susceptibility, Severity, Benefits, Barriers, Cues to Action and

Self-efficacy all when taken to heart can recommend, reaffirm and support the employee through

their travels, into the environment and help them when coming into contact with said new

demographic.

Living in an area of poverty and unhealthy surroundings can be detrimental on

everyone around. Getting up each day with a positive attitude and know you have to go to work,

where nothing is brighter or better can ruin someone's day, everyday. To make a change in this

company slowly but surely, Olivia would host get togethers for the employees so they can feel

comfortable around each other; healthy snacks and clean water may be provided. Healthy living

is hard when you do not have a ton of money or live in the greatest area, but little steps to a

healthier lifestyle is all someone needs. Offering an exercise class after work nearby in a park or

even the parking lot at the company, provides healthy lifestyle tips for the employees. This is a

way to get your employees active and healthy, because with exercise comes better minds, and

happier moods. Iesha would implement mandatory breaks for the employees to leave the

building and walk around, obtaining fresh air and sunlight to provide them with more energy.

Boehkle states, Exercise can also give you more energy. Having more energy means you will

feel more awake at work (LiveStrong 2017). In this case, employees will feel wide awake and

ready to tackle their job for the day or even the next day if consistent exercise is in place. The

health of your workers should come first because they are what keep the company running, so

these additions to the job for their own healthier lifestyle is fantastic. Mingling, exercising, and

living a healthier lifestyle all while at work, can make any bad situation a little brighter.

A very good starting point for this company is to help these individuals with healthy

lifestyle changes that alter them physically; for example diet and exercise listed above. Another

fundamental area of overall health is ones mental health. In this company, no one is given any

type of help in that area--especially since they arent given any type of health insurance

coverage. Kristen would highly recommend to the company to either start offering health

insurance to their employees with mental health benefits, or to start their own company program

support group for one another. Mental health affects how we think, feel and act Its also a

determining factor in how we react to stress. (US Department of Health & Human Services

2013).

Conclusion

The area of your job can affect your lifestyle by not having enough money, no available

health insurance, clean water, or food on the table, but having a company to work for that makes

your health a priority is tremendous. This company cares about their employees and wants them

to live life to the fullest and be the best version of themselves, so they are dedicated to providing

for their employees health and success.
