Dear Dr. Bruce,

My goal this semester was to further enhance my writing skills with the practice of the

six student learning outcomes we were introduced to this semester. The six student learning

outcomes (SLO) that have aided in my success of this course are rhetorical focus, ethical

research, persuasive arguments, organization and focus, academic language and design, and

collaboration. In my portfolio I have included samples of my work showcasing my mastery of

such SLOS.

My cover letter uses rhetorical focus by showcasing my formality when addressing you

with Dear Dr. Bruce. I am formally writing my cover letter to you by addressing your

academic position as my professor and respecting your title as my professor. This cover letter

also displays my understanding of utilizing good organization and focus by addressing

achievement of our SLOs and how I think my portfolio and its contents showcase such

achievements.

The first document I chose to showcase my writing skills is my revised annotated

bibliography. This assignment demonstrates my use of ethical research by demonstrating my use

of citations within the introduction. I utilized Wikipedia style in text citations with correct
punctuation. My annotated bibliography follows MLA guidelines. My introduction included in

my annotated bibliography demonstrates my comprehension of persuasive arguments. In my

introduction I introduce the issue of immigrant and their lack of access to health care. My thesis

statement, Although undocumented immigrants entered the United States without proper

authorization, they should be allowed to access the free health care we have to offer because they

are contributing members of society, showcases my ability to understand the counterargument

while still making my argument recognized. I support my claim with evidence and touch on the

opposing argument.

I have also chosen to include a peer review sheet done for a classmate to showcase both

my collaboration skills and academic language and design skills. My peer review sheet

demonstrates my ability to improve ones writing skills through my assessment and critique of

their written works. I was able to provide both suggestions and compliments to my classmate. I

also offered advice for my classmate in which they can enhance their writing. In the section of

organization for my peer review sheet I advise my peer on brushing up on an article that was

useful to me in the writing process. It helped me, and I felt like it could help them in achieving a

better thesis. Regarding my mastery of academic language and design skills, I believe I display

this in my use of language utilized throughout the peer review. I used academic language in my

responses. I made sure to correctly label each section for easy differentiation of topics.

All six SLOs have been mastered and is demonstrated in my work. Each piece has helped

me become a better writer. These SLOs will allow me to become a better writer moving forward

in both my academic and professional life.
