AUTOMATIC CONTROL VALVES
GENERAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION

DOROT Automatic Control Valves is proud to present the 300 Series Design Manual. This
latest line of products is the culmination of more than 50 years of experience in development
and production.
This manual is intended for use by DOROT distributors, engineering firms, consultants,
and users of hydraulic control systems. It includes all the data required to understand and
design basic applications.
The manual is divided into 8 chapters. The first chapter deals with general information. This
includes a basic introduction as well as engineering data. The following chapters are divided
into control function families, each family performing similar control functions. Within each
chapter there are a number of sections, representing the applications available in the particular
family. Each section contains basic design data making it suitable for use as an independent
source of technical information.
Though this design manual offers comprehensive information on the most common valve
control variations, control application combinations are numerous. For a non-standard solution,
or for further technical information, contact DOROT'S Technical Department or your local
distributor.

Each application section includes the following information:

valve does not fully open, as the control device prevents
total draining of the control chamber.
Closed Valve The 2-way control device is standard in most pressure
regulating valves.
Open Mode: Pilot (b) senses a downstream pressure
lower than the set-point, and fully opens passage (b), larger
than (a). All the water from the upstream flows through (a)

the upper part of the control chamber to partially drain until
the pressure in the chamber equals the downstream pressure.
Pressure in the upper part of the control chamber is decreased
and the upstream water pressure forces the seal disc to
rise (opening the valve).

chamber, so that the main valve remains fixed when the
device is in this mode.
This mode is used in on-off valves or when the regulating
valve is fully open, in order to obtain specific operating
conditions. Once in position, there is no water flow through
the control chamber.
The 3-way control device may open the main valve entirely,
creating minimum head loss.
The 3-way control device must be used when external media
(not pipeline water) is used to control the valve, or when
the control media is abrasive.

Non-Return (Check Valve) Mode

Double Chamber Valve
Flow in the normal direction forces the seal to the "open"
position, allowing for free flow. When downstream pressure
exceeds upstream pressure, return flow may occur, causing
the seal disc to instantly close as a result of both hydraulic
force and the spring's force.

Cavitation Chart
Limits of operating conditions

The chart above sets the safe limits for valves that are supposed to operate at a considerable pressure differential.
Such conditions generate noise and possible cavitation damages to the valve body.
How to use the chart:
i. Determine the maximal dynamic pressure that may be applied in the inlet of the valve.
ii. Draw an horizontal line from the pressure scale at the left side of the chart
iii. Find the requested outlet pressure in the pressure scale at the bottom of the chart.
iv. Draw an upward line at this point.
v. The intersection of the two lines defines the cavitation characteristics of the valve operation.
- In the case that it falls in the RED zone (case I)- the valve may be damaged in a fairly short time.
- In the case that it falls in the Yellow zone (case II)- the valve may generate a noise that exceeds 80db.
- In the case that the intersection is within the white zone (case III)- the valve will perform safely and quietly
General remark: The cavitation and noise data are based on tests done by the Utah State University, US, and Delft Hydraulic Laboratories, Holland.

SOLENOID CONTROLLED VALVE

DOROT model EL is an automatic, solenoid controlled

valve, activated by the pressure of the pipeline.
The valve is controlled by an electric solenoid valve, which
initiates the connection of upstream pressure to the main
valve control chamber. This either causes the valve to close
or the control chamber to drain, thus opening the valve.
The standard mode of the main valve is "normally closed"
(N.C.). An electric signal opens the standard valve.
" Normally open" (N.O.) valves are supplied on request. This valve
will be closed by an electric signal.
The standard electric current of the solenoid is 24VAC,50Hz.
Various coils, suitable to other electric currents are supplied on
request.
The main valve is supplied in two models:
Model 30, 30A for medium pressure (up to 16 bar / 230 psi)
Model 31, 31A for high pressure (up to 25 bar / 350 psi).
For further information see p.G5; and graph #1 on page G5-b.
For solenoid data refer to p.G6-f.

PROPORTIONAL PRESSURE
REDUCING VALVE

DOROT model PR[D] is an automatic, pressure reducing valve,

activated by the pressure of the pipeline.
The valve creates a fixed ratio between upstream pressure and
downstream pressure, regardless of fluctuations of upstream
pressure and flow rate.
The valve is a double chamber [D] type. Its control chamber is
permanently connected to the downstream.
Downstream pressure, applied to the top side of the diaphragm,
creates hydraulic power which is balanced by the power created
by upstream pressure to the seal disc. The area difference between
the diaphragm and the seal disc determines the pressure ratio of
approximately 2.7:1.
No other control device is needed.
Should downstream pressure exceed the above mentioned ratio
(due, for example, to a halt in the pipeline flow), the valve closes

The standard mode of the main valve is "normally closed"
(N.C.). The electric signal opens the standard valve.
"Normally open" (N.O.) valves are supplied on request. An electric
signal closes the valve.
The standard electric current of the solenoid is 24VAC, 50Hz.
Various coils, suitable to other electric currents are supplied on
request.

FLOW RATE CONTROL VALVE

DOROT model "FR" is an automatic, pilot controlled, rate-of-

flow control valve, activated by the pressure of the pipeline.
The valve maintains a preset, steady flow rate in the network,
regardless of pressure variations and flow demand.
The valve fully opens when the flow demand is below the
preset maximum value or when the system pressure cannot
supply the required flow. In such cases the head loss of the
valve is negligible.
An orifice plate is assembled on the upstream flange of the
valve, creating a small pressure differential when the required
flow rate passes through it.
A 3-way differential pilot valve, sensing the pressure on both
sides of the orifice plate, is set to maintain the preset differential,
hence the flow rate.
The pilot opens the main valve only if the flow is below the
preset value, or closes it, when the flow exceeds the preset
value.
The main valve is supplied in two models:
Model 30, 30A for medium pressures (up to 16 bar / 230 psi)
Model 31, 31A for high pressures (up to 25 bar / 350 psi).

PUMP CONTROL VALVE

DOROT model BC is an automatic, solenoid controlled

valve, activated by the pressure of the pipeline.
The valve is installed on the pump discharge. It opens slowly
on start-up of the pump, until it is fully open, and gradually
closes prior to the pump shut-off, preventing pressure surges
caused by a rapid change of water velocity in the discharge
pipe.
Both opening and closing speeds are adjustable.
A limit switch, assembled on the main valve bonnet, is
connected to the pump control panel and switches off the
pump motor when the valve is completely closed.
In case of a power or pump failure, the valve instantly closes,
performing as a fast-reacting check valve.
The main valve is "normally closed" (N.C.). The electric signal
opens the valve.
The standard electric current of the solenoid is 24VAC, 50Hz.
Various coils, suitable to other electric current are supplied on request.

The main valve is supplied in two models:

Model 30D for medium pressures (up to 16 bar / 230 psi)
Model 31D for high pressures (up to 25 bar / 350 psi).

AUTOMATIC CONTROL VALVES
PUMP CONTROL/
BC/TO
PRESSURE SUSTAINING VALVE

DOROT models BC/PS" and BC/TO are automatic, solenoid

controlled valves, activated by the pressure of the pipeline.
The valve is installed on the pump discharge in a downhill pumping
system, where the network drains when the pump is idle.
The valve slowly opens on start-up of the pump, maintaining
preset back pressure in the pump discharge. This prevents
excess flow through the network filling stage which can cause
cavitation damage to the pump, pressure surges, and may even
cause electric motor overload.
The valve fully opens, following the complete filling of the main
pipe, when the network pressure rises to the normal duty point.
The valve creates a negligible pressure loss when fully open.
The valve gradually closes, prior to pump shut-off, preventing
pressure surges caused by the rapid change in pipe velocity.
A limit switch, assembled on the main valve bonnet, is connected
to the pump control panel and switches off the motor when the
valve has completed closing.
In case of power or pump failure, the valve instantly closes,
performing as a fast-reacting check valve.
The main valve is "normally closed" (N.C.). The electric signal
opens the valve.
The standard electric current of the solenoid is 24VAC, 50Hz.
Various coils, suitable to other electric currents are supplied on request.
30D-6-BC/PS The main valve is supplied in two models:
Model 30D for medium pressure (up to 16 bar / 230 psi)
Model 31D for high pressure (up to 25 bar / 350 psi).

DOROT model BC/FR is an automatic, solenoid controlled

valve, activated by the pressure of the pipeline.
The valve is installed on the pump discharge.
On start-up of the pump, the valve opens at a slow adjustable
pace, until the system flow rate rises to the preset maximum

AUTOMATIC CONTROL VALVES

A u t o m a t i c H y d r a u l i c C o n t r o l Va l v e s NS
NON-SLAM CHECK VALVE

The Problem
- Stoppage of a pump, or pumping station, in a high- rise
building generates a low pressure wave and, consequently,
a returning flow that closes the check valve of the pump
in accelerated speed.
- The closure of the check valve under the pressure of the
rushing water mass generates, very frequently, a tremendous
slam of the valve flap to its seat. This mechanical hammer
may damage the pump casing, its concrete base, accessories
etc. and is disturbing the tenants of the building by the
noise it generates.

DOROT'S Solution
- The NS valve is located at the pump discharge (or on the
common manifold of the pumps outlet), and is fully-
opened through normal operation of the pump.
- When the pump stops, and flow rate drops to
nil, the valve starts closing. But unlike a standard hydraulic
check valve that closes slowly from full- opening to full-
closure, the NS valve closes fast (within 2-4seconds,
depending on it`s size) to approximately 20% of its full-
opening stroke (Fast closure period). By this time the
returning flow is reduced to a negligible value.
- Then, the closure pace of the NS valve is decreasing
to a slower, adjustable speed (Slow closure period).
This restricted movement of the valve trim generates a
30-6-NS non-slam seating.
- The described procedure does not require any
electrical command and interlink between the valve and
the pump as the device is activated automatically by the
hydraulic parameters of the system.

PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL
SUSTAINING VALVE

DOROT model DI is an automatic, pilot controlled, pressure

differential sustaining valve, activated by the pressure of the
pipeline.
The valve is assembled in the pipeline and modulates to
maintain a steady, predetermined pressure difference between
two points in the network.
Should the high pressure side increase, or low pressure side
decrease, the valve opens, thus reducing the differential.
In case the pressure differential falls below the required set-
point, the valve closes drip-tight.
The main valve is supplied in two models,
Model 30, 30A for medium pressure (up to 16 bar / 230 psi)
Model 31, 31A for high pressure (up to 25 bar / 350 psi).

For further information see p. G5; and graph #2 on page G5-b.

ELECTRONIC CONTROLLED VALVE

DOROT model EC is an automatic valve, controlled by the

versatile ConDor Electronic Controller.
The electronic control is selected for:
Very sensitive and accurate regulation
A combination of various control functions
The frequent automatic modification of the controlled value
The remote control of a controlled value
The control function (or combination of control functions)
is initially programmed in the "ConDor" Controller, so that the
operator can enter his operation parameter values (set-
points), using plain English screens.
The main valve is equipped with two solenoid valves. The
solenoids insert upstream pressure to the valve control
chamber or drain it to the valve downstream, thus opening
or closing the valve. External control media, such as compressed
air, can be used if necessary.
The "ConDor" Controller sends pulses (12VDC Current) to
one solenoid to initiate the open command, and to the
other to initiate the close command.
30-6-EC Manual activation of the solenoid valves is possible, allowing
automatic control override.

Choose the "SP" addition in case:
The pipe is longer than 2000m
The flow velocity is higher than 1.5m/s
The pipe pressure rating is low.
It is advisable to run a surge analysis if your system meets the above conditions.
