SUMMARY
Nature has always been regarded as an element of utmost importance in East Asian
countries

Subjects, Themes or Motif- the objects or items that are usually put into paintings may be about
animals, people, landscape, and anything about the environment

Painting started from pre-historic man.

Japanese painting, and later printmaking, is the depiction of scenes from everyday life and narrative
scenes that are often crowded with figures and detail. This tradition began in the early medieval period
under Chinese influence.

Landscape painting- highest point of painting in China

Silk- used as the medium to paint upon, but it was quite expensive

Cai Lun- invented the paper in the 1st Century AD

Daoist- metaphysical; aspect of Chinese painting

Xie He- established Six Principles of Chinese Painting ; a writer, art historian and critic in 5th century in
China

Mountain and Water- important features in Korean landscape site for building temples and buildings

Logographs- ancient writing symbols; engraved on the shoulder bones of large animals and on tortoise
shells

Jiaguwen or shell-and-bone script- script found on shoulder bones of large animals and on tortoise
shells

Cangjie, legendary inventor of Chinese writing

Temples- usual subjects in East Asian Painting

Woodblock printing- technique for printing text, images or patterns originated in China

Japanese Ukiyo-e- the best known and most popular style of Japanese art is Ukiyo-e, which is Japanese
for pictures of the floating world and it is related to style of woodblock print making that shows
harmony and carefree everyday living.
