leading edge to the back. See Media Sources in chapter 5 to
determine whether to load media short or long edge rst.
To prevent paper jams, make sure the paper ts between the paper
guides and under the cassettes retaining clips.
You will feel a slight resistance as you push the cassette into the
platemaker; this is caused by the catch that prevents the cassette
from being dropped.
7. Pull out the output tray extension and turn up the paper stop for paper
sizes larger than letter/A4.
Multipurpose Feeder
The platemakers multipurpose feeder holds up to 150 sheets of 20 lb.

PlateMaker 5 Features
Accurate Calibration Technology (X-ACT and More X-ACT)
Due to manufacturing variations and usage, a traditional platesetter may not
image lines with the exact dimensions specied by the application. Xant
created X-ACT to compensate for these differences and implemented this
technology in your platemaker.
Set the X-ACT feature via the front panel X-ACT menu (Setup: Graphic:
X-ACT). Set More X-ACT via your web browser.
2. Press the Menu key until Setup: Graphic appears. Then, press the
Enter key.
3. Press the Menu key until Graphic: X-ACT appears. Then, press the
Enter key.
4. Press the Menu key until X-ACT: Test Page appears. Then, press
the Enter key. A plate images with 2 lines, Line A and Line B. The
measurement listed by each line is the desired length for that line on
that plate.
5. Measure Line A. Use the following procedures to adjust the line length.
a. Note the amount Line A is over or under. Next, press the Menu key
until X-ACT: LineA appears, and then press the Enter key.
b. Press the Menu key until the amount which would most closely
adjust the line to the desired length appears. For example, if Line
A is 341.9 mm instead of 342.9 mm, select 1.00 mm to lengthen
the line to 342.9. Then, press the Enter key.
6. Measure Line B. Use the following procedures to adjust the line length.
a. Note the amount Line B is over or under. Next, press the Menu
key until X-ACT: LineB appears, and then press the Enter key.
b. Press the Menu key until the amount which would most closely
adjust the line to the desired length appears. For example, if Line
B is 229.1 mm instead of 228.6 mm, select -0.50 mm to shorten
the line to 228.6. Then, press the Enter Key.
8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the line measurements agree with the
lengths listed on the test page. Then, press the On Line key when the
line lengths are correct. Ready appears in the window.
More X-ACT changes must be measured and changed in mm. A More X-ACT
ruler with millimeter rulings comes with your platemaker to use with this
procedure. Calibration can be performed for each media type.
Halftone Calibration
Humidity A constant humidity level +-5% is the best operating level for
your PM5. Calibrating at 50% and operating at 30% will produce bad results.
In general, the higher humidity level, the more consistent the image.
You can access the settings for laser power and EP1 in the front panel of the
PM5 or the web browser using the address shown in the front panel.
Enter the URL displayed on the front panel of your PM5. For example
10.1.2.138. Click on the word Halftoning and then Halftone Calibration.
Your PM5 comes with halftone calibrations that will be successful for most
applications but you may wish to set this yourself to gain greater control. Your
PM5 uses a technique called slots. Your PM5 contains 7 custom halftone
slots that you can use for unique halftone calibration. You will have to specify
each of these slots to have a unique media (paper, plate, lm, heavy stock,
userdef1, userdef2) and line screen (70, 85, 106, 120, 133, 150, 188).
There are 42 different combinations but you choose 7 for custom halftone
calibrations. The remaining combinations will be congured to their factory
defaults. There is a 188 LPI setting, although the PM5 is only guaranteed to
150 LPI.
You must now decide which halftone variations you wish to calibrate. It does
not matter which values go into which slot. For example 133 LPI/polyester
plate in slot 4. In order to change the values in a particular slot, click one of
the highlighted words in the slot and a page appears with pull down values
for LPI and media. After you choose your particular settings click the Save
button to enter these into the slot and it will return you to the Halftone
Calibration page.
From the test page you just imaged, you can change the white point values
for this slot. You can use a loupe to select the rst box that contains a usable
and consistent halftone and enter the information as the white point. After
selecting a white point, use the loupe to locate a eld of 50% value from the
area under the white point on the test page. Record this number on your
computer screen and click Calibrate. Remember there is typically 10% dot
gain on your press with plates generated from your PM5.
Advanced Calibration:
Users with a Densitometer, may wish to more accurately calibrate the PM5.
It is typically useful to generate output from your printing press using this
method. Decide which media type, LPI and slot you wish to congure. Adjust
these values by clicking on the highlighted names in each slot and choose
advanced calibration.
This output is now ready for calibration. The test output will generate many
boxes that correspond to the calibration boxes on the advanced calibration
web page. Each box should be read with a Densitometer (contact Xant
for qualied Densitometers) capable of reading our dot structure. Some
Densitometers may only read dots generated by a traditional imagesetter so
you may want to contact the manufacturer of your Densitometer for advice.
Take the Densitometer readings and enter each into the corresponding box
then click Linearize. Any boxes left blank will be generated but you must
enter at lease the rst and last box of each row. You may now image another
test page. This page will display the new calibration curve and should display
a relatively smooth S pattern if the process was done accurately. If it does
not, read your values again in the questionable areas, enter those values and
click Linearize. This process may be done as many times as necessary.
Installed Options, as its name implies, allows you to check the installation
status of your options. Options not applicable to your platemaker may appear
in the list; if so, their status will be listed as not installed.
Interface Conguration
You can congure the platemaker Ethernet Interface both from the front panel
and via the browser utilities. You are able to set the IP address, network
class, subnet mask, gateway, DHCP, and duplex mode.
Language
Select the language for the platemaker front panel window from the
Language menu (Setup: Utility: Language). English is the factory default.
Plate Count
The Plate Count feature indicates how many plates have been imaged from
your platemaker. To check the current page count, use the Plate Count menu
(Setup: Utility: Features: Plate Count) or use the platemaker browser utilities
(Information: General Information).
Pinbar Menus
The Pinbar Alignment feature allows you to image two lines at the top of your
plates for use as an alignment tool for your plate punch. This feature must be
enabled (set to On) through the PPD Pinbar option before it is active on the
platemaker.
Once Pinbar Alignment is enabled in the PPD, set alignment options through the
front panel Pinbar menu (Setup: Utility: Pinbar). This menu has Length and Center
submenus that allow you to congure the placement and length of the alignment
marks, or use the platemaker browser utilities (Conguration: Pinbar Alignment).
If the Units feature is set to Euro, the Center and Length measurement
options appear in millimeters.
Center - The Center menu allows you to set the placement of the alignment
marks from the center of the page. Options are from a minimum of 0.0" (0
mm) to a maximum of 3.0" (76 mm) in increments of 0.1" (2.54 mm) from the
center. For example, if you select 2"; one line images 1" from the left of center
and the other line images 1" to the right of center. The factory default is 2.0"
(51 mm).
Length - The Length menu allow you to designate the length of the two
alignment lines that image. Options are from a minimum of 0.0" (0 mm) to a
maximum of 3.0" (76 mm) in increments of 0.1" (51 mm). The factory default
is 0.5" (12.7 mm).
Platemaker Name
The front panel platemaker name menu (Setup: Utility: Features: Platemaker
Name) indicates the name assigned to your platemaker.
You can change your platemaker name using the browser utilities Platemaker
Name option. Look under Conguration: Network: EtherTalk. If you have
more than one platemaker on a network, renaming the units can prevent
confusion. To change the name, use the Setname.ps le in the Xant utilities.

PlateMaker5 will be listed under the KEY1 heading.
Shape choices include the standard, Euclidian, Enhanced 145 LPI; 197
LPI; 256 LPI, Line, Round, Ellipse, Square, Diamond, Rhomboid, and Dual
options. Also, there are options to turn on and off the Z-dot feature (see the
next section for Z-dot details) and the Enhanced Angles feature (covered
earlier in this chapter).
Clicking on Round and Ellipse allows you access advanced options for those
shapes. Both shapes feature an Inverted option that allows you to choose
how a dot is constructed within its grid. A standard dot is constructed from the
mid-point of the grid and expands toward the outside edges. For example, if
you change a 10% grayscale to a 90% grayscale, the dot expands from the
middle of the grid out. If you select invert and again switch from a 10% to
90% grayscale, the dot grows from the outer edges of the grid in toward the
middle.
You can select the type of units through the front panel Units menu (Setup:
Utility: Units) or via the platemaker web browser utilities (Conguration:
Units).
Utility Pages
The utility pages provide a way for you to check current conguration

Printing Plates
Myriad 2 plates are made from a durable, scratch-resistant polyester based
material designed to resist excess scumming and inking on the printing
blanket. Unlike disposable plates made of other materials, these plates
produce brilliant halftones on up to 20,000 impressions under optimum
conditions without an external fuser.
Myriad 2 plates run well with rubber, acrylic, and oil-based inks and most
universal fountain solutions. You can use some silver-based fountain
solutions, but results are not reliable. Test the solution before using it on a
nal product.
The fast ink-up capacity of Myriad 2 plates results in a shorter initial run to
provide tone-free printing. These plates require a run of approximately 50
sheets after a dry start-up and approximately 10 sheets after stopping and
reactivating the dampening system.
The following chart lists Myriad 2 plate sizes. To order the plates, call your
preferred Xant dealer or your Xant Consumables Sales Representative at

1. Turn off the platemaker and unplug the power cord from the power
source.
1. Turn off the platemaker and unplug the power cord from the power
source.
2. Remove any plate that may be in the plate tray. Close the plate tray and
the top cover.
3. Remove the imaging unit. Never move the platemaker with the imaging
unit installed.
a. Place the imaging unit in its original bag to protect it from light. If
you no longer have this bag, place the unit in a dark bag or wrap it
in a dark cloth.
b. Ensure the imaging unit stays level during the move. Rock it gently
to redistribute toner before placing the unit back in the platemaker.
3. Remove the roller assembly by turning up the rollers plastic levers, one
on each end; then, holding the levers, lift the transfer roller up and out at
a 45 angle.
Transfer Roller
4. Clean toner from the transfer roller with a soft bristle brush.
6. Lower the roller back into place with the gear end to the left, rst. Make
sure the lever protruding below the transfer roller ts inside the small
opening on the door.
7. Push the roller into its holding clips. The roller assembly should spring
back freely when pressed.
1. Turn off the platemaker and disconnect it from the power source; then,
remove the plate jam and the imaging unit.
Note: The exposure unit becomes very hot during operation. Always
allow this unit to cool completely before opening the exposure
unit cover. If a plate jam occurs in the exposure unit area,
turn off the platemaker and wait at least 20 minutes before
attempting to clear the jam.
2. Remove any plate scraps and wipe off plate and toner dust with a dry,
clean cloth.
1. Remove all plates from the output and plate trays. Then, squeeze the
top cover latch to release the lock.
3. Remove the imaging unit by grasping its handles and pulling it slowly
out of the platemaker. Once you begin pulling the imaging unit out of the
platemaker, remove the unit completely. The units shutter may not open
properly or may be damaged if the unit is pulled partially out and then
pushed back into the platemaker.
a. Release the hook on the white core roll from the groove on the
pick up shaft, using a at blade screwdriver carefully in order to
not break the hook.
c. Holding the rubber side of the pick up roller up, slide it on the pick
up shaft to the outside of the drive pins on the shaft. Then, gently
pull up on he pick up roller to remove.
5. Clean the pick up rollers and pick up shaft by gently wiping them with
cotton swabs.
The arrows molded into the side of the pick up rollers show the direction
of rotation. Be sure to install the rollers correctly.
6. Replace the two gray pick up rollers using the following steps for each
roller.
a. Align the pick up roller above the pick up shaft and between two
core rolls; then, lower the pick up roller onto the pick up shaft.
b. Slide the pick up roller toward the pick up shaft drive pins until the
pins insert into the groove on the roller.
c. Slide the white core roll in the same direction toward the drive
pins, until its hook snaps into the groove on the pick up shaft.
Exterior Cleaning
Use the following procedure to clean the exterior of the platemaker.
1. Turn off your platemaker and disconnect it from the power source.
Status Messages
PlateMaker 5 front panel window messages provide status information and
can help you determine the source of a problem or plate jam.
Bad Imaging Unit The imaging unit is bad and needs to be replaced.
Early Plate Jam A plate jam has occurred along the media path
caused by the plate reaching a position earlier than
expected.
Exit Plate Jam A plate jam has occurred after the plate has been
imaged but before it has been deposited in the
output tray.
Front Plate Jam A plate jam has occurred caused by the plate not
being pulled from the tray properly.
Inval Imaging Unit The installed imaging unit is not the right type and
should be replaced with a Xant unit.
Late Plate Jam A plate jam has occurred caused by the plate not
reaching the exit roller at the correct time.
Low Plate The plate stack is low in the plate tray. The
message appears during each plate feed.
Disregard it.
Plate Jam A plate jam has occurred along the media path.
Plate MisMatch The plate loaded in the platemaker is not the same
size plate indicated for the job in the application le.
When I image a scanned image, it is so dark that most of the detail is lost.
Adjust the platemaker gamma setting to change the midrange
grayscale values of the image. See Halftone Calibration in chapter 4.
Rescan the image with a higher resolution. Generally, black and white
images should be scanned at a resolution of two times the line screen
desired on the imaged output. Multiply this number by the ratio of the
imaged output size to the original image size.
SR = Print Image LPI x 2 x Image Size Ratio
SR = the Scan resolution
Image Size Ratio = printed image size/original image size
For example, for a line screen of 95, set the scanner resolution to 190
dpi (95 x 2). To image the same image at 75% of its original size, set
scanner resolution to 142 dpi (95 x 2 x .75).
Scanning the image at a lower than optimum resolution results in
less detail. Scanning at a higher resolution increases le size and
processing time, and it may only slightly increase the amount of detail.
Redistributing Toner
If you have not used the imaging unit in several days, toner may have settled.
Remove the IU from the platemaker, and shake the unit gently to redistribute
toner. Replace the IU in the platemaker. See Imaging Unit in chapter 1.
The amount of toner used increases as dial settings move from low (L) to
high (H). Imaging with too high a setting shortens the life of the imaging unit
and may degrade image quality.
1. Open the plate tray by grasping the handle in the top center of the cover
and pulling down.
2. Turn the density dial toward the H (Higher density) to darken the image
or toward the L (Lower density) to lighten the image.
Check the density dial when you replace an imaging unit. The setting required
for the previous unit may be too high or too low for the new unit.
A slight tint appears on the entire page except for a small strip of
approximately .25 (6 mm) at the top.
If the tint appears on the plate, check the platemaker
density setting and re-image a new plate.
If the tint appears on the nal press output, but not the
plate, check the wetting solution mixture.
- Increase the fountain solution concentration in the
wetting mixture.
- Check the pH of the fountain solution and adjust, if
necessary. Optimum range is 4.5 to 5.5.
- Use an alcohol substitute, such as Varn Laser Etch
1000, instead of alcohol. The alcohol may cause
premature ink breakdown.
- Check the alcohol or alcohol substitute to water
ratio. The ratio should be no greater than 32:1. Add
fountain solution to lower the alcohol or alcohol
substitute percentage.
Mechanical Issues
This section provides tips for resolving problems with the platemaker
mechanical setup.
Preventing Jams
Use the following guidelines to prevent most plate jams.
Make sure the platemaker is level and in an appropriate location.
Make sure plates are Myriad 2.
Make sure plates are stored properly.
Make sure the plate is loaded properly in the tray.
- Load and image only one plate at a time.
- Make sure the correct size plate is loaded in the plate tray.
Make sure the output tray does not become overlled.
Remove any plate in the plate tray before turning on the platemaker.
Reinsert the plate when the platemaker displays the Ready message.
Use the Xant PlateMaker 5 imaging unit.
Keep the platemaker clean.
Locating Jams
Always remove a jam by pulling the late out in the direction of the plate feed.
Damage caused by improper jam removal is not covered by your warranty.
