EQ: How has the advancements in technology seen in Pediatric Medicine lead to successful

results for pediatric cancer patients?

WT: The advancements in technology seen in Pediatric Medicine has led to successful results for

pediatric cancer patients by giving doctors more than one way to treat their patients.

RT: There is evidence that the use of 3D printers in Pediatric Medicine has made it easier for

doctors to treat their patients.

Bauer, Meredith R. "Hospitals Are Using 3D Printing to Save Children's Lives." Motherboard.

N.p., 3 Oct. 2016. Web. 27 Sept. 2017.

This source is a blog from a website called Motherboard. The website is a collections of

blogs written by mothers about their experiences. Meredith Bauer, the author of the blog, gave

birth to a son who was born with part of his cranium separated from his brain. In her blog she

tells of how the doctors 3D printed a replica of her sons condition and devised a plan to put his

brain back together. The doctors at the Boston Childrens Hospital were able to complete the

surgery. Bauers son is now 1 year old and living a normal life. The Motherboard blog is

important to the research because it is evidence that with the help of 3D printing doctors are able

to successfully map out treatment plans for their pediatric patients .

Fornell, Dave. "The Future of 3-D Printing in Medicine." Imaging Technology News. N.p., 24

May 2016. Web. 27 Sept. 2017.

In Dave Fornells article he describes the advancements that are being made to 3D

printing for medical use. Fornell expresses that in the future doctors will hopefully be able to 3D

print actual working body parts. The new 3D printed body parts will be used for transplants and

other medical necessities. Fornell also talks about the legality of 3D printing and how it is similar

to music copyrighting. The copyright issue is referred to doctors taking other doctors printed

items and pass them off as their own. This article is relevant to the research because of its

information on the advancements still being made to 3D printing, and the effect it will have on

the field of Pediatric medicine.

"The Heart Program at Miami Children's Hospital Uses 3D Printing Technology." Nicklaus

Children's Hospital. N.p., 04 Jan. 2015. Web. 27 Sept. 2017.

The Nicklaus Childrens Hospital in Miami wrote this article to give information about a

case where a 3D printed heart was used to map out a surgery. The patient was a four month old

girl who had been born with a complex heart anomaly. The cardiac surgeon, Dr. Robert Hannan,

used the 3D printed heart to map out a safe and effective way to fix the problem with the

patients heart. The surgery, with the help of the 3D printer, was successful. The young girl who

was told she wouldnt make it now has the chance to live a full and happy life. The article is

important to the research of 3D printing in pediatric medicine because it is evidence that the use

of 3D printing to map out treatments is effective.

Hirschler, Ben. "3D Printing Points Way to Smarter Cancer Treatment." Scientific American.

Reuters, n.d. Web. 27 Sept. 2017.

The Scientific American article, by Ben Hirschler, gives information about the basic uses

of a 3D printer. The 3D printer was first used for medical use when British scientist used it to

devise a plan of treatment for a tumor that seemed impenetrable. The article also gives

information about how much a 3D printing machine usually cost. According to Hirschlers

research as of 2017 a 3D printer for medical use can cost up to $3 billion, but with the

advancements still being made by the year 2020 they could cost up to $21 billion. The Scientific

American article is relevant to the research of 3D printing in pediatrics because it gives basic

information on 3D printers and what they are used for.

McMillen, Matt, and Brunilda Nazario. "Prosthetics and More: Is 3D Organ Printing Next?"

Medscape Log In. N.p., 02 Mar. 2015. Web. 27 Sept. 2017.

Doctor Brunilda Nazario has written this article about the advancements to 3D printing.

Nazario references the research being done by doctor Rosalie Sears where she is testing the use

of actual human cells while 3D printing. Sears hopes that her research will lead to being able to

3D print prosthetics that are better suited for a specific person. The research will also allow

doctors to possibly create actual organs using a person's cells. This information is relevant to the

research because it gives example of ways 3D printing is continuing to advance.

This National Institute of Health article give information of all the different aspects of 3D

printing. 3D printing is used for anatomical models and preoperative planning. The

anatomical models used during preoperative planning give surgeons a better idea of how

to tackle complicated surgeries. The article also goes in depth on the step by step

procedures of using a 3D printer. This is important to the research because it explains

how the doctors uses the 3D printers and how a 3D actually works.
