Tools
Let's Begin
When taking measurements, place the metal tip end of the tape measure
at one reference point and extend the rest of the tape to the next
reference point. Record your measurements. A Personal Measurement
Chart can be found at the end of this e-book. Print out copy.
Tools
The things you will need on hand to take the measurements are
A tape rule
A Measuring sheet
A pencil or pen
A string.
This is normally the thinnest part of the torso. The string should be tied
around the natural waistline. The string should not be tied too high or
low, but right at the waistline.
Write down the measurements as you take them. Do not add any ease
(allowance for comfort or style) while taking measurements
Lets begin
Neck
Stand at the side of the person, pass the measuring tape over the fullest
part of the bust, keeping the tape level at the back. Ensure that the tape
measure does not slip down the back. Take the measurement of the
circumference of the bust.
Stand at the side of the person, pass the measuring tape around below
the bust. This is a measurement of the circumference of the ribcage right
under the bust.
Stand in front of the person, measure the distance between the nipples.
Stand in front of the person, take the measurement from one shoulder
point to the other shoulder point (the shoulder point is the place where
the arm joins the shoulder).
Stand in front of the person, measure from one armhole across the chest
to the other armhole
Stand at the side of the person, past the measuring tape around natural
waistline. Take the measurement of the circumference of the waistline.
Stand at the side of the person, take measurement around the fullest part
of the hip. This is located about 8 below the waistline for females and 9
below the waist line for males. Take the measurement of the
circumference of the hips.
Stand at the side of the person, measure 4" below the natural waistline,
then take the measurement of the circumference of the lower abdomen.
Stand at the back of the person, take the measurement from one
shoulder point to the other shoulder point (The shoulder point is the place
where the arm joins the shoulder).
Stand at the back of the person, measure from armhole across the back
to other armhole.
Stand in front of the person, measure from the neck point (The neck-
point is where the neck joins the shoulder) to the bust tip (nipple).
Stand in front of the person, measure from the neck point over the fullest
part of the bust to the natural waistline.
Stand in front of the person, measure from the neck point over the fullest
part of the bust to the hip.
Stand at the back of the person, measure from the most prominent
vertebra at the base of the neck to the natural waistline. (Vertebra: This
can be located by feeling for the last vertebra at the base of the neck
when the neck is bent forward. The neck should be straighten as soon as
the vertebra is located so that an accurate measurement can be recorded.
)
Stand at the back of the person, measure from the neck point over the
back to the hip.
Stand at the side of the person measure from the waist down to the knee
or desired skirt or dress length.
Stand at the side of the person measure from the waist down to the ankle
or desired skirt or dress length.
Stand at the side of the person measure from the waist down to the floor
Stand in front of the person, measure from the neck point over the bust
to the floor or the desired dress length.
Stand at the back of the person, measure from the neck point over the
back to the floor or the desired dress length.
Stand at the side of the person, let the person place their hand akimbo.
Measure from the shoulder point over the elbow to the wrist. For a full
sleeve measurement. Do the same for any desired sleeve length. (The
shoulder point is the place where the arm joins the shoulder).
Stand at the side of the person, measure loosely around the wrist.
Stand at the side of the person, let the person place their hand akimbo.
Measure loosely the fullest part of the upper arm.
Knee Circumference
Take the measurement of the circumference of the knee, with the person
standing up. Do not fold the leg at the knee. Take the measurements of
the knee circumference again, with the person seating down. The
difference in both measurement gives you an idea of how much ease you
need around the knee to allow for free movement
Ask your friend to seat on a flat stool. Take the measurement at the side
of the person from the natural waistline to the top of the stool.
