About Moyo Abikoye

Introduction
You may have experienced the thrill of wanting to sew something new.
But before getting round to cutting out your fabrics and making
something lovely, you need to stop in your tracks and take your
measurement.

Taking measurement at the start of a project may seem a chore

compared to the excitement of making something new. Measurement
taking is essential to the fitting of your sewing project.

One of the things I do is take my measurements from time to time with

the help of my sewing buddy. I record the measurements and place the
measurement sheet in my sewing box. I reach for the measurement sheet
whenever I need it.

Measurement taking is a skill that requires practise. Accurate

measurements are the foundation of an excellent cut and outfit.

How to take measurements

Get a friend or sewing buddy to take your measurement and you can in
turn take their own measurements too.

The person to be measured should stand straight in a natural posture and

the person taking the measurement should stand to the side. Take
measurements from the side of the body, in order to have a good view of
the front and back of the person being measured.

When taking measurements, place the metal tip end of the tape measure
at one reference point and extend the rest of the tape to the next
reference point. Record your measurements. A Personal Measurement
Chart can be found at the end of this e-book. Print out copy.
Tools
The things you will need on hand to take the measurements are

A tape rule

A Measuring sheet

A pencil or pen

A string.

Locate the natural waistline

This is normally the thinnest part of the torso. The string should be tied
around the natural waistline. The string should not be tied too high or
low, but right at the waistline.

This string would a reference point for taking measurements. All

measurements should be taken closely, over a minimum of clothing not
tightly, over loose fitting garments

Write down the measurements as you take them. Do not add any ease
(allowance for comfort or style) while taking measurements
Lets begin

Neck

Take the measurement of the circumference of the base of the neck.

Measure around the neck lightly passing the tape around the top of the
most prominent vertebra at the base of the neck and inner part of the
collar bone at the front. Tip: This would be where a small chain would
normally seat.

Record your reading.

Bust

Stand at the side of the person, pass the measuring tape over the fullest
part of the bust, keeping the tape level at the back. Ensure that the tape
measure does not slip down the back. Take the measurement of the
circumference of the bust.

Record your reading.

Under-Bust

Stand at the side of the person, pass the measuring tape around below
the bust. This is a measurement of the circumference of the ribcage right
under the bust.

Bust span

Record your reading.

Shoulder Front

to the other armhole
