1. A man traveled from the village to the post office at the rate of 25 km/h and walked
back at the rate of 4 km/h. If the whole journey took 5 hours 48 min. Find the distance
of the post -office from the village .
(a) 40 km (b) 80 km
(c) 10 km (d) 20 km

Answer: (d) 20 km
Solution:
Using the formula mentioned in the shortcut formulas for speed, time and distance:
We have,
Average for the whole distance = (2x25x4)/(25 + 4) = (200/29) km/hr
It is given that the total time taken =
5 hours48 minutes = 5+48/60 = 5 + 4/5 = 29/5 hrs

Therefore, total distance to and fro, from the village to the post-office =
(200/29)(29/5) = 40 km
Thus, the distance from the village to the post office = 40/2 = 20 km

2. A car travels a distance of 170 km in 2 hours, partly at a speed of 100 km/hr and
partly at 50 km/hr. Find the distance traveled at a speed of 100 km/hr.
(a) 160 km (b) 120 km
(c) 140 km (d) 220 km

Answer:(c) 140 km
Solution:
Let the distance traveled at 100 km/hr be x km.
Then the distance traveled at 50 km/hr is (170 - x )
Therefore, according to the conditions given in the question, we have
(x/100) + [(170-x)/50)] = 2
=> x/100 + 170/50 - x/50 = 2
=> x/100 - x/50 = 2 - 170/50
=> (x - 2x)/100 = (100-170)/50
=> (-x)/100 = -70/50
=> x = (70/50)(100)
= 140 km

Thus, 140 km is the distance traveled at 100 km/hr.

3. The ratio between the speed of Ram and Shyam is 6:7 . If Ram takes 30 minutes more

speed of the second train ?
(a) 40 km/hr (b) 82 km/hr
(c) 120 km/hr (d) 60 km/hr

Answer: (b) 82 km/hr

Solution:
Let the speed of the second train be x km/hr.

If two trains are traveling opposite to each other (on different tracks obviously) then the
relative speed of the trains would be the sum of the speeds of the two trains.

for more formula related to trains

read: shortcuts formulas time, speed and distance

Therefore,
Relative speed = (50 km/hr + x km/hr) = (50 + x) km/hr. = (50 +x)(5/18) m/s

Again,
total distance traveled by the trains = (100 + 120)m=220m in 6 seconds.

Therefore, according to the conditions given in the question, we have

220 /{(50 + x)(5/18)} = 6

=> 220 = 6{(50 + x)(5/18)}
=> 220/(5/18) = 300 + 6x
=> (220 x 18)/5 = 300 + 6x
=> (44 x 18 ) = 300 + 6x
=> 792 - 300 = 6x
=> 492/6 = x
=> x = 82

Therefore, the speed of the second train = 82 km/hr.

(c) 1 hour 40 min (d) 1 hour 6 min 40 sec

Answer: (d) 1 hour 6 min 40 sec

Solution:
Since,they are riding towards each other, their relative speed=(15 + 12)=27km/hr
Again, they are 30 km apart, time taken to cover this distance
= (30)/27 hours
= 10/9 km = (1 + 1/9) hour
= 1 hour + 60/9 minutes
= 1 hour + 20/3 minutes
= 1 hour + 6 minutes + 2/3 minute
= 1 hour 6 minutes 40 sec

per kg,so that the mixture be worth Rs 10 per kg?

(a) 6:7 (b) 3:7

(c) 5:7 (d) 8:7

Answer : (d) 8:7

Solution:

The formula for alligation is

n1/n2 = (A2 Aw) / (Aw A1)

Where A1 and A2 are the price of the two items that are mixed and n1 and n2
are the quantities of each.

We have to find n1/n2

Put in the values of A1 = 9.30, A2 = 10.80 and Aw = 10

We have,

n1/n2 = (10.80 - 10)/(10 - 9.30) =0 .80/0.70 = 8/7

2. In what ratio must water be mixed with milk to gain 20 % by selling the
mixture at cost price?

3. The milk and water in two vessels A and B are in the ratio 4:3 and 2:3
respectively. In what ratio the liquids in both the vessels are mixed to a new
mixture in vessel C containing half milk and half water?
(a) 7:5 (b) 3:5

(c) 9:5 (d) 22:3

Answer: (a) 7:5

Solution:

Milk in first vessel = 4/7

And milk in second vessel = 2/5

And after mixing the above mixture the resultant mixture would have
milk.

Using allegation formula,

n1/n2 = (2/5 1/2)/( - 4/7 )= (1/14 )/( 1/10) = 7:5

4. In what proportion must rice at Rs 3.10/kg be mixed with rice at Rs 3.60

kg so that the mixture be worth Rs 3.25 a kg ?

(a) 11.3 (b) 25.3

(c) 7. 3 (d) 22.3

Answer: (c) 7:3

Solution:

Let n1 quantity of the rice at 3.10/ Kg be mixed with n2 quantity of rice at

3.60 Kg
Then
using alligation formula we have,

n1/n2 = (A2 - Aw)/(Aw -A1) = (3.60 - 3.25)/(3.25 - 3.10) = 0.35/0.15 =

7/3

5. How many kg of salt at 42/kg must a man mix with 25 kg of salt at 24 kg

so that may he on selling mixture at 40/kg , gain 25 % on the outlay .
(a) 35 kg (b) 20 kg

(c) 5 kg (d) 15 kg

Answer: (b) 20 Kg

Solution:

First we find the cost price / kg of the mixture.

It is given that selling the mixture at Rs. 40 gains him 25 %, using this to
get the cost price.

=> 1.25x = 40

=> X = 32

Using 32 as the cost price /Kg of the mixture in the allegation formula we
have,

N1/n2 = (24 32)/(32 - 42) = 8/10 = 4/5

Given that n2 = 25 Kg

Then n1 = (4/5)25 = 20 Kg

6. A mixture of a certain quantity of milk with 16 lit of water is sold at 90

p/lit if the pure milk is worth 108 p/lit, then how much milk is there in the
mixture?

(a) 160 liter (b) 80 liter

(c) 180 liter (d) 220 liters

Answer: (b) 80 liter

Solution:

Let cost of water = 0

Then,
let n1 is the quantity of water and n2 be the quantity if milk then, using
alligation equation

n1/n2 = (108 90)/(90 -0)= 18/90 = 2/10= 1/5

16/n2 = 1/5

n2 = 16 x 5 = 80 liter

7.In what proportion must water be mixed with spirit to gain 50/3 % by
selling it at C.P ?

(a) 1:10 (b) 1:20

(c) 1:35 (d) 1:6

Answer: (d) 1:6

Solution:

For such questions, just divide the percentage profit with 100.

50/3/100 = 50/300 = 1/6

8. 300 gm of sugar solution has 40 % sugar in it how much sugar should be

added to make it 50 % in the solution?

(a) 60 gm (b) 25 gm

(c) 80 gm (d) 10 gm

Answer: (a) 60 gm
Solution:

Let x grams of sugar is added, then

Total sugar in the mixture is 0.40 x 300 + x = (120 + x) grams

And the total solution now becomes (300 + x )grams

It is given that after adding x grams of sugar in the solution becomes 50 %

Therefore, using percentage formula

(120 + x)/ (300 + x) x 100 = 50

=> (120 + x)/ (300 + x) = (1/2)

=>240 + 2 x = 300 + x

=>x = 60 grams

9. There are 65 students in a class, 39 are distributed among them so that

each boy gets 80 p and each girl gets 30 p find the number of boys and girls
in the class.

(a) 40, 25 (b) 35, 30

(c) 39, 26 (d) 41, 24

Answer: (c) 39,26

Solution:

Let there are B boys and G girls,

Then, it is given that,

B + G = 65 ----------------(1)

Since, each boy got 80 p and each girl got 30 p, total amount totaling to 39
Or 0.80 B +0.30 G = 39

8B + 6G = 390 ------------(2)

Solving the above 2 equation to get B = 39 and G = 26

Alternative solution:
Using allegation equation,

Average money each child got = 39/65 = 0.60 P

Now find n1/n2 = (0.80 0.60)/(0.60 0.30) = 2/3

where n1 are girls and n2 are boys

This means girls and boys are in the ratio 2:3

Therefore, boys =( 3/5 )65 = 39 and girls = (2/5)65 = 26

10. A person has a chemical of Rs 25/lit in what ratio should water be mixed
in that chemical so that after selling the mixture at Rs 20/lit he may get a
profit of 25 % .

(a) 15:7 (b) 12:5

(c) 33:2 (d) 16:9

Answer:(d)16:9

Solution:

First find the cost price of the final mixture.

Since, by selling at Rs 20 he got a profit of 25% then , let x be the cost price
1.25x = 20

=> x = 20(4/5) = 16

Now we have cost price at Rs. 16 per liter of the mixture. Let the price of
water be 0,

Then using the allegation formula, we have

n1(water)/n2(chemical) = ( 25 16)/(16 -0 ) = 9/16

or chemical /water = 16:9

Solution to time Time and Work( 21- 29+)

21. A can do 3/4 of a work in 12 days in how many days can he finish 1/8
of the work ?
(a)8 (b)12
(c) 7 (d) 2

Answer: (d) 2
Solution:

Let it takes A, D days to complete the work. Then,

(3/4)D = 12
=>D=12x(4/3) = 16 days

Then 1/8 of the work would be done in = (1/8)x 16 = 2 days.

22. A man ,a woman or a boy can do a job in 20 days ,30 days or 60 days
respectively. How many boys must assist 2 men and 8 women to do the
work in 2 days ?
(a) 18 (b) 8
(c) 10 (d) 14

Answer: (b) 8
Solution:
Work done by a boy in one day = 1/60
Work done by a woman in one day = 1/30
Work done by a man in one day = 1/20

Now, Work done by 2 men and 8 women in one day = (2/20 + 8/30)
= (6+16)/(60) = 22/60
And in two days they would be completed 2 x (22/60) = 44/60

Now, Work remaining = 1 - 44/60 = 16/60

Since, A boy does 1/60 of the work in day. Therefore, Number of employed
to do the work
= 16/60/1/60 = 16 boy-day in 2 days and 8 boys in one day.

23. A and B working alone can finish a job in 5 days and 7 days
respectively.They work at it alternately for a day. If A starts the work, find in
how many days the job will be finished ?
(a) 29/5 (b) 11/5
(c) 24/5 (d) 21/5

Answer: (a) 29/5

Solution:
Work done by A in one day = 1/5
and work done by B in one day = 1/7

They are working alternately.

Therefore, Work done in first two day = (1/5 + 1/7) = 12/35
Work done in first four day = 24/35
Work done in first 5 days = 24/35 + 1/5 = 31/35
Remaining work = 4/35

Day it will take B to complete = 4/35/1/7 = 4/5 of the day.

Therefore Total days taken = 5 + 4/5 = 29/5 days

24. A can complete a work in 25 days and B can do the same work in 10
days. If A after doing 4 days leaves the work. Find in how many days B will
do the remaining work ?
(a) 42/5 (b) 22/5
(c) 11/5 (d) 32/5

Answer; (a) 42/5

Solution:
Work done by A in ` day = 1/25
And work done in 4 days = 4/25

Remaining work = 21/25

Since, Work done by B in 1 day = 1/10

Days it will take B to complete the work = 21/25/1/10 = 42/5

25. A can do a piece of a work in 12 days. A does the work for 2 days and
leaves the job.B does the remaining work in 5 days. In how many days B
alone can do the work ?
(a) 16 (b) 18
(c) 20 (d) 6

Answer: (d) 6
Solution:

Work done in 1 day by A = 1/12.

He worked for 2 days and completed 2/12 = 1/6 of the work.

Remaining work = 5/6 and completed by B in 5 days.

Therefore , Work done by B in 1 day = 5/6/5 = 5/30 or 1/6

And total work would have been done by B alone = 1/1/6 = 6 days.

26. A can do a piece of work in 80 days.He works at it for 10 days and than
B alone finishes the remaining work in 42 days. In how much time will A and
B working together finish the work ?
(a) 10 (b) 5
(c) 25 (d) 30

Answer: (d) 30
Solution:
Work Done by A in 1 day = 1/80
And work done in 10 days = 10/80 = 1/8

Work left = 1 - 1/8 = 7/8

It was completed in 42 day.

Therefore Work done by B in 1 day = 7/8/42 = 1/48

And Days it will take B to complete the work = 1/1/48 = 48 days.

And A and B working together = 48x80/(48 + 80) = 3840/128 = 30 days.

27. After A has completed 1/3 rd of piece of work in 4 days, B completes

the rest of it in 16 days.In how many days can A and B complete the work
together ?
(a) 8 (b) 10
(c) 12 (d) 13 (e) none of these

Answer: (a) 8
Solution:
Work Done by A =1/3 and days it took to complete 1/3 of the work = 4
Therefore, Work done by A in 1 day = 1/3/4 = 1/12
And Total days A would have taken to finish the work = 1/1/12 = 12 days.

Work done by B= 2/3 and it took him 16 days

Therefore, work done per day by b = 2/3/16 = 1/24
And it would take him 1/1/24 = 24 days to finish it alone.

Using the formula when two are working together = 24x12/(24 + 12) = 8
days

28. 20 men can prepare 40 toys in 24 days working 18 hours a day then in
how many days can 36 men prepare 48 toys working 16 hrs a day ?
(a) 16 days (b) 12 days
(c) 21 days (d) 18 days (e) none of these

Answer: (d) 18 days

Solution:
Using the formula, M1D1H1W2 = M2D2H2W1

We have , 20x24x18x48 = 36x16xD2x40

On solving for D2
D2 = 20x24x18x48/36x16x40 = 18
days

29. P can do a piece of work in 9 days. Q is 50% more efficient than P. The
number of days it takes for Q to do the same piece of work is
(a) 4(1/2) (b) 6
(c) 3 (d) 13(1/2)

Answer: (b) 6
Solution:
Using the formula, E2D1= E1D2
=> (1)9 =(1.5)(D2)
=> D2 = 9/1.5
= 6

30. B and C can complete a piece of work in 12 days, C and A can do it in 8

days. All the three can do it in 6 days. A and B together can complete it in
(a) 4 days (b) 6 days
(c) 8 days (d) 10 days
Answer:
Solution:
Using the Formula mentioned in the List of Short-cut formula, we have
Number of days, A can do the work = (12x6)/(12-6) = 72/6 = 12 days
Number of days, B can do the work = (8x6)/(8-6) =48/2 = 24 days
Therefore, number of days A and B can do the work = (24)(12)/(24 + 12)
= 8 days

31. If 12 men or 24 boys can do a work in 66 days , the number of days in

which 15 men and 6 boys can do it is
(a) 44 (b) 33
(c) 55 (d) 66

Answer:
Solution:

Since 12 men or 24 boys can do the same job in 66 days,

therefore the efficiency of a men to boy = 24/12 = 2/1
or men/boy = 2/1 => men = 2 boy

Therefore,15 men and 6 boys = 15 men + 6 (1/2)men = 15 +3 men = 18

men
Thus,
And number of days, 18 men can do the job
=> days = (12)(66)/(18) = 44 days
