Part 2: Instructional Planning

Initial Journal Write (4 min) INTRODUCTION

Reflect back on a learning experience where you acquired a new skill or new
knowledge that was built on previous understanding.
Was this type of learning helpful? Did it turn out to be a positive experience?
(Mia/Max will give an example if students desire)
Introduction and state objectives (2 min) INTRODUCTION
Introduce schema by asking the class if anyone knows then describe
State that schema can be used across all subjects and that it can be used as a
resource to help students make new connections to accomplish new tasks
Introduce buddy read activityspecify that this article describes schema through
addressing reading comprehension, BUT be open-minded to consider how
schema could be applied to other subjects
Article Buddy Read (5 min) INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
With buddy next to them
Mark text while they read

Together collaborate about what schema is and why it is important write on paper (8
min) INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Go to board-- finish product & explain comic (can anyone explain it?) (3 min) PRACTICE
& ASSESSMENT **bring journal and pen
Debrief journal prompt (3 min) CLOSURE
Revisit journal prompt and try to think of 1/2 other moments of schema that
helped you gain new knowledge? How will you intentionally use schema in the
future?

Also plan how you will do the following:

Materials
Printed Articles
Paper & marker
Stapler
Differentiate instruction to meet learning needs
Variation of learning outlets- articles, internal thinking, pair reading
aloud, team collaboration, and reflection.
How will you engage all students to be thinking & processing important ideas
Class collaboration to come up with definition and importance together
will foster community and encourage perspective of all students.
They will also journal at the end of the lesson to full circle and process all
that they learned
Effective questioning and direction giving that activates thinking and
engagement
Journal prompts students to activate schema on prior experience
Peer collaboration prompts student articulation.
Transitions and management strategies
Set time for each phase.
Students will be given clear instruction as to who they are working with
and when.
Class board interaction will be facilitated to be concise and on task.
