Statement of the Problem

What are the possible causes of unpunctuality at deCarteret College, the effects it has on the

schools community and how can this be resolved?

The researchers aim is to investigate the effects it has on the schools community and how can

this problem be resolved.

Method of investigation

For the purpose of this investigation the researcher chose a questionnaire as the instrument of

using a questionnaire are:

It is a simple way of collecting data

It is easier to analyze

It is easier to distribute and collect

Instrument Used To Collect Data

Dear Respondents,

This survey is being done purely as an academic exercise for Social

Studies course the researcher is presently pursuing and therefore, there is no need to write your

name. Answer the question as honestly and as truthful as possible. There is no right or wrong

answers. Most of the questions can be answered by a check in a box like this or write it where

necessary,

Procedures for Data Collecting

The respondents were randomly selected to take part in the study. A total of thirty-five (35)

names were written down and placed in a bag; then twenty-five (25) of those names were taken

out. The names that came out were the respondents that took part in the survey. The researcher

distributed twenty-five questionnaires and collected twenty-five questionnaires. The researcher

handed the questionnaires out to the randomly selected names. The respondents were given a day

to complete the questionnaire and then each questionnaire was collected directly after this

timelines completion. 56% of the correspondents were males on the other hand only 44%. 84%

of the respondents were of age 14-17 years, 16% of the respondents were 18 and over and 0%

Interpretation and Analysis

Unpunctuality has been a growing problem in deCarteret College. The researcher conducted a

questionnaire to find out the major causes, effects and solution that unpunctuality has on

deCarteret College.

In Figure 1 the percentage of male respondents was higher as 56% of the correspondents were

males on the other hand only 44% of females responded to the questionnaires. This represented

as a ratio is 14:11

Majority of the questionnaires were answered by children aged 14-17 years as 84% of the

respondents were of this age, 16% of the respondents were 18 and over and 0% were 10-13 in

figure 2. This represented as a ratio is 21:4:0

In answering the question on what is the major cause of unpunctuality 52% of the respondents

said that far distances students have to travel is the major cause of unpunctuality the long

distances which some students have to travel to get to school leaves them no option but to hit the road

long before dawn. The Gleaner: March 8, 2015, Ryon Jones while 24% said that delinquents are the

major cause of unpunctuality and 20% said otherwise. 4% of the respondents said that family

emergencies are the real cause of unpunctuality as shown in figure 3. This represented as a ratio

is 13:6:5:1

In Figure 4 respondents were asked who /what is responsible for students being unpunctual in

school 40% of the respondents said that it is due to the inadequacy of transportation difficulty

accessing rides to the school because transportation has been rendered inadequate The Gleaner:

March 10, 2010 while 36% said the students themselves are responsible for unpunctuality and
24% blame their parents for their unpunctuality the harsh reality is that many parents are missing

in action, parenting from a distance. The Gleaner: March 24, 2014, 0% said otherwise. This

represented as a ratio is 10:9:6:0

In figure 5 68% of the respondents answering the question what are the effects of unpunctuality

said it would result in the inability to function fully in schools 16% said it will result in

delinquency and 12% said it would result in truancy and only 4% said otherwise. This

represented as a ratio is 17:4:3:1

Unpunctuality would affect a student in many ways. 64% said their school record would be

affected while 12% each said it would result in the inability to achieve ones full capability and

acquiring a bad reputation.8% said otherwise and 4% said it would result in both the inability to

achieve to ones full capability and the student would acquire a bad reputation this was shown in

figure 6. This represented as a ratio is 16:3:2:1

Findings

From the research conducted it can be noted that students of deCarteret College know that being

unpunctual is a problem in the school community.

1. The major cause of unpunctuality in deCarteret College is the far distances students have

to travel as shown by the 52% of the respondents in Figure 3, therefore many students are

unpunctual for school.

2. There is also the inadequacy of transportation of which 40% of the respondents indicate

as one of the major causes of unpunctuality in figure 4.

3. If this continues it could result in the inability of students achieving to their fullest

capabilities as 68% of the respondents indicated in figure 6.

Recommendation and Implementation

Recommendation 1: From the information in findings 1 far distances students have to travel is

the major cause of unpunctuality. It is recommended that seminar be held on proper time

management. Many students use the far distances they have to travel as an excuse to be

unpunctual while in reality many students just do not manage their time wisely.

Recommendation 2: In addressing the findings 2 it can be seen that the inadequacy of

transportation is another major cause of unpunctuality. The researcher recommends that the

school implements a special transportation system for students complaining about inadequate

transportation. The implementation of transportation systems would reduce the lack of

transportation thus reducing the number of unpunctuality in deCarteret College.

Implementation: In implementing Recommendation 2 the school could implement firstly fund

raising activities which would help acquire the fees this transportation systems would require.

Also a plead can be sent form the school to the minister of transportation asking for proceeds in

aids of this new transportation system. After this is acquired the school would need to implement

rules so this recommendation can be maintained.
