Online Activity For this lesson, the teacher will hold a collaborative, interactive online
session with the class via the web (example: Blackboard Collaborate)
to describe and explain to the students the three main types of rock:
Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous.
Sedimentary rocks are rocks that are formed from particles of
sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material
(sediment). Example of this type of rock is limestone.
Metamorphic rocks are rocks that are formed under the
surface of the Earth from the metamorphosis (change) that
occurs due to intense heat and pressure. Example of this type
of rock is marble.
Igneous rocks are formed when Magma (molten rock deep
within Earth) cools and hardens. These rocks are shiny and
glasslike, example is obsidian.
By providing the students with the characteristics of these three main
types of rock, students will be able to explorer, observe and
distinguish between various rock types. During the webcast session,
students will be encouraged to submit questions, observations and
comments in the chat section.
After reviewing the three rock types, the student will log in to
explorelearning.com to access the Mineral Identification Simulation.
Within this simulation, students will be able to virtually observe,
measure and identify up to 26 mineral and rock samples. The students
will be able to observe the color, luster, shape density, hardness,
streak, and reaction to acid for each mineral.
During the online session, the teacher will explain and describe the
various rock types and answer any questions regarding the formation,
classification and identification of these rocks. The teacher will also
