Course Syllabus:

Semester: I
UNIT I Construction & Operation
D.C. Generators Principle of operation Constructional features - Action of commutator
E.M.F equation - armature windings Definitions - Lap winding - Wave winding - Developed
winding diagram - Comparison between lap and wave windings - Advantages of wave winding
over lap winding - Dummy Coils - Equalizer rings.

UNIT II Armature Reaction & Commutation


Armature reaction Effects of armature reaction - Cross magnetizing and de-magnetizing
AT/pole Methods of limiting the effects of armature reaction - Effect of brush shift -
commutation Process Resistance commutation - Voltage commutation methods of improving
commutation Compensating windings Interpoles.

UNIT III Methods of Excitation & Operating Characteristics
Methods of Excitation - separate excitation and self excitation- Types of dc generators -
Operating characteristics of dc generators - No-load, Load & External characteristics of
separately excited, shunt, series and Compound generators - Voltage build-up in shunt generators
- Causes for failure to self excite and remedial measures - parallel operation of dc generators -
Applications of dc generators.

UNIT IV Operation & Characteristics


D.C Motors Principle of operation Significance of Back E.M.F. - Torque equation
Characteristics of shunt, series and compound motors - Transfer function and block diagram of
dc motor - Applications of DC Motors.

Semester: III
UNIT V Starting, Speed Control and Braking
Methods of D.C. Motor starting: Direct-on-line starting - Armature resistance starting - Three
point starter - Four point starter - Controlled voltage starting - Automatic starters - Counter emf
starter - Time-delay starter - DC shunt motor starter design.
Speed control of D.C. Motors: Armature circuit resistance control method, field flux control
method, and armature voltage control method.
Braking of D.C. Motors: Plugging, Dynamic braking and Regenerative braking.

UNIT VI Losses, Efficiency and Testing of D.C. Machines


Losses in a dc machine - Efficiency of a dc machine as a generator and as a motor - Condition for
maximum efficiency - Testing of d.c. machines: Direct method - brake Test, Indirect method -
Swinburnes Test - Hopkinsons Test - Field's test - Retardation Test .
Course Outcomes:
Faculty will be able to
1. prepare design oriented assignments, improve skilfulness in quality of delivery
mechanism in the class room and problem solving.
2. describe the constructional details, working principles, and characteristics of dc
machines.
3. determine the performance and operational related problems of the dc machines and
suggest the remedial measures to solve them.

4. explain the starting, speed control and braking methods of dc motors.


5. demonstrate the knowledge and understanding on the various losses and testing
methods of dc machines.

2. Detailed methodology of transformation of knowledge / imparting required expertise


on the subject to the associating faculty.

Oral interaction with Master


Preparing detailed learning material about these topics by referring standard text
books and NPTEL videos.
Preparing standard & typical assignment questions and their solutions.
Adopting critical analysis in solving the problems from NPTEL, GATE and IES.
Problem solving through simulation tools like MATLAB.
Preparing project/design based assignments.

3. Detailed methodology of assessment procedure prescribed to ensure that the associating


faculty would be competent enough to deal the subject in all aspects from all angles.

Ensure the quality of learning material prepared by the faculty in terms of depth of
subject and knowledge of current developments in that discipline.
Ensure the preparedness of the faculty in setting the quality of questions in that
subject.
Ensure the skilfulness of the faculty in problem solving.
Ensure the quality of delivery mechanism in the class room for effective learning of
the students in that subject in order to incorporate current developments into their
course work.
