THE MOCKING DEAD

A small outbreak can turn into a worldwide apocalypse... but only through a long string of
screw-ups! Once actual zombies begin popping up in our world, a lone intelligence analyst
realizes real-life events are beginning to mimic the events of a long-lost, Grade-Z, drive-in
horror flick. As he races to save humanity with this knowledge, he quickly learns the only
thing more dangerous than ravenous walking corpses is the ineptitude of the living! The
gutsplitting (and then eating) comedy that pokes fun at the zombie horror phenomenon!
Illustrated in graytones with red highlights (for blood and gore, of course), so it feels like the

ever-popular The Walking Dead series. Collects the complete storyline from issues #1-5 of
The Mocking Dead comic book series, complete with a cover gallery!

The Mocking Dead is very meta, pretty funny, and

awfully clever.

Fred Van Lente already did a great job on the subject (of ISBN10: 1-60690-480-9
zombie parodies) with his work on Marvel Zombies, but ISBN13: 978-1-60690-480-0
damned if he didnt manage to find a unique approach to
the concept with Mocking Dead.

INTRODUCTION TO THE MOCKING DEAD

by David Wellington,
Author of the Monster Island trilogy and
the upcoming Positive, a Zombie Epic

Zombies are tough.

Oh, not in the physical sense. We all know that zombies are weak individually
and only dangerous in mobs. But for a writer, its incredibly hard to come up with a new,
interesting story about zombies. They have no thoughts or feelings. They eat, and they
shuffle around a bit, and thats it. They dont even talk, which means no dialogue.

The conventional wisdom is that zombies are a boring subject. But Fred Van
Lente isnt the kind of writer who stops at conventional wisdom.

For one thing: his zombies arent boring. Hes kept the tropes mostly intact:
mindless cannibals roaming after human prey. But by adding one simple tweakhis
zombies dont moan, they chuckle as they come for youhes done something really
special. Hes made zombies creepy again. Reading these pages I was struck over and
over by just how unnerving that would be. To watch your death shamble ever closer, and
all the while its laughing at you. Yeesh.

Thats Van Lentes strength as a writerhe takes some monster or character

youre already familiar with and then he twists it just enough. Just enough to make it
fresh. Just enough to remind you how you felt the very first time you saw it. To bring
back the awe, the fear, the joy.

Then, because hes a master of the craft, he makes it funny. There are things in
this book that made me laugh out loud and spill my soda. Even while I was feeling the
creeping dread closing in all around. Do you have any idea how hard that is to pull off?

And thats just what he does with the bad guys.

The other bit of conventional wisdom about zombies is that any good zombie
story isnt about the zombies, its about the humans trying to survive. Here, again, hes
exceeded expectations. The human characters in The Mocking Dead arent just scared,
embattled survivors. Theyre a way for Van Lente to talk about something more. He
keeps one foot firmly on the floor herewe care about these people, we want them to
livebut at the very same time hes commenting on what it means to be a geek, what
were really asking for when we read horror stories, and just how stupid people can get
when what they want is just beyond their grasp. There are so many levels here, all in
five quick issues.

Of course, he didnt do it alone. Max Dunbars art is paranoid and twitchy and
perfect for the story. Aikau Olivias (very) minimal coloring is brillianta deep commentary
delivered in fewer colors than your average Golden Age superhero funny book used. And
Bill Tortolinis mold-breaking covers jump at you from the shelf and ground the story in
the military bureaucracy that is perhaps its darkest element.

This things a master class in how to write comics. Its also fun. Whatever youre
looking to get out of it, I know youre in for a treat.
