Oral Presentations

A. Ted Talk: Erin Crawley-Woods

Strengths

Inflection was used to avoid sounding monotone, making the speech more interesting.

There was use of her own experience which enhanced the speech, making the content

relatable and understandable.

She had a moderate volume or voice projection. The use of a microphone amplified

her voice.

She had smooth articulation because she did not mumble or use unnecessary words

(i.e. uhm). She used pauses and moments of silence.

Eye contact was used constantly across all audience members. She did not look down.

She had a presentable appearance, including a professional clothing choice.

She clearly and confidently knew the subject matter, including statistics and

companies or organizations, and she did not read from any form of notes.

Weaknesses

She swayed and leaned whilst talking and when changing her eye contact.

The microphone made her voice difficult to understand and unclear.

She held the microphone too close to her face.

Although she talked at a reasonable pace, there are times when she talked too quickly.
She imitated those in jail inappropriately, perhaps with poor judgement.

She was stationary and stayed in one particular spot for a long period of time.

There was an abrupt ending.

No visual aids were used.

B. Ted Talk: Kwame Opare

Strengths

His volume or voice projection was loud. A microphone enhanced his voice, making

it clear.

There were use of pauses and moments of silence for emphasis and for time to digest

the content.

There was a subtle use of references, such as the notes in front of him, and there were

relatable and understandable references within his speech.

The speech had flow and organization, making it easier to follow along. There was a

clear beginning, middle, and end.

Appropriate gestures were used, such as those within the demonstrated dance. There

was little hand movement.

Inflection was used, perhaps for emphasis.

Visual aids were used, including relevant images and videos.

He took his time and enunciated well.

He generally had smooth articulation as he avoided mumbling or filling time with

unnecessary speech within the first half of the presentation.

He knew the subject matter well, showing confidence.

He tied information together and recapped information, enhancing the structure of the

speech.

He repeated some content (i.e. the image), perhaps for emphasis and/or familiarity.

He incorporated the audience to apply information from his speech, allowing them to

collectively answer questions and to actively participate in a memorable dance and

song.

Weaknesses

The use of space could be a strength, but he walked around excessively and mostly

with his head down instead of at the audience. His arms sometimes swayed.

Breath in the microphone was audible; perhaps he didnt take the appropriate time to

breathe or he may have said a statement faster than needed.

There were some moments of monotony, although he later fixed this with inflection.

It was difficult to focus and concentrate on the video and his speech at same time.

There was some use of unnecessary or inappropriate choice of words: all these

things, things, uhm, and I believe. He also stuttered on a few words.

He moved objects around, such as the stool and item on top of the stool.

His voice could become too loud when he was demonstrating the dance and song.

Although he was confident and expressive throughout the entire presentation, the way

in which he delivered information was inconsistent. He was more comfortable in the

2nd half of the presentation, using unnecessary speech, whereas the 1st half of the

presentation was more professional and well-practiced.
