Project Plan:

I am reading A Series of Unfortunate Events to a Sixth Grade class for 30 minutes. The

following 30 minutes are spent with a Fourth Grade student named Allisson across the hall,

teaching her English. I read every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30pm -2:30pm. I have been

going since the second week of class which started August 28th and I plan to end on or around

December 7th,2017.

Civic Engagement:

Civic Engagement to me means helping others have a better quality of life, like I have. I think

my civic duty is to be humble and to pass on compassion in every circumstance and at every

opportunity. My Dad always taught me that Were all in this together; so whatever strengths

or talents I have should be used to better someone else.

Personal Culture:

I am a single mother in my mid 20s. I go to Salt Lake Community College and I am majoring in

Business and Clothing Design. I plan on transferring to the University of Utah soon. I work at

Nordstrom. I live in Draper. I family is upper-class and I make enough money to be considered

lower class. I have bipolar disorder. I am a Mormon. I have lived in Utah my entire life, but I

have had quite few traveling experiences. I am dating on a casual basis. I usually vote

republican but have become more liberal.

Culture Groups:

I am working with Hispanic children in the Sixth and Fourth Grades. The school is located in

West Valley City, and based on the income characteristics of the surrounding neighborhoods, I

assume I am working with a lower middle class community. Spanish is very prevalent in their

school and so is the Latin culture.

Challenges:

I dont speak Spanish at all and I am teaching a young girl English, whose only language is

Spanish. Also, I am a Caucasian American, and a lot of these children are immigrants and,

therefore, I am foreign to their Latin culture.

Benefits:

I believe that I will be able to relate to the Hispanic community. I know when I was best friends

with a girl name Yareli, my views on border control and immigration completely changed. My

mother emigrated to the U.S. in 1990. I also think a benefit is just hoping I made a difference to
that young girl learning English. I also hope to obtain a greater understanding and respect for

their customs, because they have given up everything to come to this country and this country

was founded on immigration and freedom. I hope to gain such an understanding that going

forward politically, that in the voting polls I keep in mind their rights and privileges too. They

are a disadvantaged group in our society and whatever I vote for, I hope it equally benefits

them as well.
