Technology
Simplicity means reliability
Cigr failure statistics:
About half of all circuit breaker failures have mechanical origin!

Our response: Simplicity!

Single motion interrupters
Copper technology with integrated
contacts
Major reduction of number of parts
in operating mechanisms
Grading capacitors can be removed
up to and including 420 kV
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 14
Technology
Controlled switching with Switchsync
Reduces switching transients in the
substation and the system
All applications:
Capacitor banks, filter banks
Shunt reactors
No-load transformers
No-load transmission lines
Replaces pre-insertion resistors,
damping reactors etc.

Particular functions:
Adaptive control
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 15
Application
Switching of capacitor banks
Voltage transients when energizing one phase of a 72 kV capacitor bank

A B

A: At an unsuitable point-on-wave position, close to the power

frequency voltage peak. A high voltage transient is generated.
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 16

B: With Switchsync relay. Energizing occurs close to

voltage zero, and the transient is considerably reduced.
Technology
Suitable circuit breakers

ABBs live tank circuit breakers are

well suited for controlled switching:
Stable operating times; only small
variations with idle time, ambient
conditions and control voltage

High and stable dynamic

dielectric withstand capability
between the contacts

We recommend use of SwitchsyncTM

controllers only with ABBs SF6 live
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 17

tank circuit breakers

Technology
Switchsync - gives value

Technical advantages
Reduced stresses on system components
(e.g. transformers, reactors and circuit
breakers)
Reduced maintenance of circuit breaker
May prevent false relay operations
Simple, self monitoring electronic device

Lower costs
Pre-insertion resistors, damping reactors
etc replaced
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 18

Shorter delivery and commissioning times

Technology
Fault clearing time

Fault clearing time =

Relay time + Break time

Typical relay time: 5-20 ms

Typical break time: 40-60 ms

Keep break time short:

Minimize thermal and mechanical stresses
Minimize damage at the fault location
Decrease risk of system instability and loss of
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 19

synchronism
Improve selectivity between relay protection
zones
Technology
Short break time
Optimized latches
Triple-action latches give short closing and
opening time
Balanced design; insensitive to mechanical
shock and vibrations

Optimized, single motion interrupters

Can handle high contact speed
Can handle current with high DC component
ABB PP/H/HV - Page 20

Two cycle (33-40 ms)

break time for the whole
range of circuit breakers
Technology
Voltage (TRV) capability beyond IEC/ANSI
Optimized single motion interrupters
Lowest electric field stress during opening
and closing
Well controlled gas dynamics
High and stable dynamic dielectric
withstand capability between the contacts

Benefits:
Extreme TRV-requirements can be
met with cost effective solutions
Examples:
Grading capacitors are
Capacitive switching, IEC Class C2,
unnecessary in many cases

SF6 is a greenhouse gas, and consumption should be minimized!
Minimize the amount of gas: Minimize the leakage of gas:
ABBs live tank breakers contain Proper design of sealing systems
very little SF6
For the same rating, dead-tank Static seals:
breakers contain around 10 times Double O-rings
as much SF6 as live-tank breakers or peanut ring

Dynamic seals:
Double X-rings
