English 10 Honors- Intro to King Lear

Standards:
RL. 9-10.3- Analyze how complex character (e.g. those with multiple or conflicting
motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance
the plot or develop the themes.
RL. 9-10.6- Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work
of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world
literature.
1.9-10.1b- Develop claim(s) and counterclaims fairly, supplying evidence for each while
pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the
audiences knowledge level and concerns.
L9-10.6 Acquire and use accurately general academic and domain-specific words and
phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career
readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when
considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Objectives:
Students will be introduced to King Lear. SWBAT discuss ideas and characters.

Materials/Equipment:
King Lear book
King Lear Character List
Act 1- Partner Questions Assignment

Procedures:
Introduction to King Lear- Little background on Kind Lear
Warm up- How much do you love?
o Ask students to name a few things they love. Lead them with a few things
listen on the board (ie. chocolate)
o Next pick one of the items a student said.
Teacher: How much do you love chocolate? Student: A lot
Teacher: Do you love chocolate more than cake? Student: yes
o Tell students this lesson is not actually about food, but about family.
o Ask students to list a few family members
Teacher: Do you love your mom more than your dad? Student: I
cant possibly choose just one.
o Elicit the response that this is not a good way to think about family
(choosing one over another) and this is what causes a problem in King
Lear
Place character list up on the projector. Students are to copy down the list in the
back of their spiral notebook (where we have been putting other lists and vocab
words)
Assign reading parts
Read Act 1
 Break in pairs and complete King Lear questions.

Closure:
Gather back as a class, go over activity and answers to Act 1 questions.

Assessment:
During closing discussion listen and assess answers students come up with
Collect and grade paper with Act 1 questions
