Overview

2. Overview of TWS FL-8

This document is split into the following three main sections:
Introduction
Installation
TWS FL-8 Commissioning and Testing
The Introduction section provides a brief overview of TWS FL-8 followed by a description of
the TWS FL-8 hardware characteristics. The Installation section describes the steps taken to
physically install a TWS FL-8. The TWS FL-8 Commissioning and Testing section involves
configuring the TWS FL-8 software and finally testing the fully installed unit.

2.1. Introduction
TWS FL-8 is designed to accurately locate faults on high voltage, overhead line feeders that
may include lengths of cable. It can give useful results on more complicated networks
including some branches. The preferred location is a substation where more than one feeder
is connected to the busbar. TWS FL-8 depends on the measurement of current transients on
the secondary side of the main protection current transformer. This method can only be
applied at points on the system where current transformers are available.

At substations where only one feeder connects to a transformer, it will be necessary to

measure voltage transients from a suitable voltage transducer. Contact QUALITROL for
further details on measuring voltage transients.

TWS FL-8 is used to monitor eight line modules. It can monitor 2, 4, 6, or 8 line modules
depending on the number of fault location (FL) cards mounted. A single FL card has
capability to monitor two line modules. Refer to Appendix H for more details on mounting FL
cards.

2.2. Standard Equipment

As shown in Figure 2.1a and 2.1b, a standard TWS FL-8 comes equipped with: -
One TWS FL-8 chassis with: -
internal power supply, solid state flash drive, CPU Card, GPS module, optional modem
and line modules (maximum of 8). There are also external connections for Ethernet
(RJ45 or fibre), four alarm outputs, IRIG B time synchronisation output and a serial
port.
GPS antenna with a 10 meter leads (extension cables are available, see section 4.5.7)
Split core inductive couplers and associated nylon washers, nuts and screws (3
inductive couplers for each line module)

2.3. Typical Scheme

Figure 2.2 is a typical scheme of two TWS FL-8s installed at either end of an overhead line.
Each TWS FL-8 monitors the current transients on phase A, B, and C of the overhead line
feeders from the secondary wiring of the protection CT. Digital inputs are also provided to
connect to protection relays or trip relays to flag a line trip. The main computer is usually
situated in the control room and is used to retrieve timestamps of current transients from
both TWS FL-8s at either end of the line and calculates distance to fault.

3.6.6. LED Functions

Normal Run Time Mode

There are nine tri-colored (green, red, and amber) LEDs on the TWS FL-8 front panel. When
the device is switched on, all nine LEDs keep flashing (anti-clock wise direction) in green for
a maximum of 3 minutes. This indicates that the LCD interface is booting up. If the firmware
is upgrading, then the right side LEDs scroll from top to bottom and the left side LEDs scroll
from bottom to top in green. Once the firmware is upgraded successfully, only the Health
LED flashes in green and the others are in an OFF state. If a communication failure occurs
during the upgrade, all nine LEDs flash in red.

3.7. Shutdown and Reset

Pressing the reset or the shutdown switch when the device is running may lead to the loss of
data that is under acquisition. However, the data that is already available in the device is not
affected.

3.7.1. Shutdown Switch

The TWS FL-8 device can be shut down gracefully by pressing the shutdown switch, SW2,
for more than 3 seconds. After the device shuts down, the Healthy LED (on the front panel
of the device) stops glowing, indicating a successful shutdown. Now, the user can switch off
the power supply to the device.
Switching off the device without a graceful shutdown might corrupt the memory
device.

If the user releases the shutdown switch before 3 seconds, the device enters into the
Channel check mode (for details about the Channel check mode, refer to Section 3.6.6).
The shutdown switch is available on the motherboard or CPU. Refer to section 7.4.4.

3.7.2. Reset Switch

When the device is functioning abnormally, the user can reset the device by pressing the

Figure 3.22 TWS FL-8 PPH/PPM

TWS FL-8 can be assigned an IP address statically or dynamically (by setting DHCP
status as DHCP Client).
The default IP address used by Ethernet port 1 is 192.168.0.11.
Ethernet port 2 uses a default IP address until the user changes the default IP address
(192.168.1.11) to any other IP address.
In addition, TWS FL-8 has the capability to act as a DHCP server (by setting DHCP status
as DHCP Server), in which the user can assign a range of IP addresses that can be
allocated to other devices connected to the network.
For network related configuration, IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS IP, and DHCP,
consult the network administrator.

Note An incorrect network configuration will prevent proper equipment communication and
network access.

Network Services Provided by TWS FL-8 through Ethernet

Telnet: Telnet is a network protocol that allows users to connect to a TWS FL-8 device over
a TCP/IP network. It provides access to a command-line interface, allowing a trained

3.10. Clock Synchronization

Each TWS FL-8 device has an internal clock for maintaining the time-stamp for the recorded
data. This clock can be synchronized to an external GPS, internal RTC, IRIG-B, or IRIG-J.
When multiple TWS FL-8 devices are installed at any one site, any one device (the time
master) can be used to synchronize the other devices (time slaves) by using a PPS signal
(Refer to Figure 4.2).
Therefore, using clock synchronization, all TWS FL-8 devices can be synchronized to the
same time and synchronously sampled to the GPS, internal RTC, IRIG-B, or IRIG-J.

Note For TWS fault location the time master must be synchronized to GPS.
IRIG-B or IRIG-J synchronization does not provide sufficient accuracy. Time slave
units have degraded fault location accuracy compared to the master.

3.10.1. TWS FL-8 as Master

Using an External GPS PPS

An external GPS antenna shall be connected to the BNC connector on the rear panel of the
TWS FL-8 device.
The antenna cable type is RG6 with BNC terminations connected to a Trimble Bullet
antenna (maximum length is 45 m without an amplifier).
TWS FL-8 can be configured as the time master using iQ+, as shown in the following figure.
Refer to iQ+ help for additional information.

Figure 3.28 - Time Management

39 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Components and Specifications

3.10.2. TWS FL-8 as Slave

When TWS FL-8 is configured as a time slave, it receives PPS input from the time master
and derives the time of the day by using NTP over the network.
TWS FL-8 can be configured as a time slave using iQ+, as shown in the following figure.
Refer to iQ+ help for additional information.

Note For TWS FL-8 to be fully time-synchronized as a time slave, both PPS and NTP are
required from the time master.

Figure 3.29 TWS FL-8 Time Master/Slave Configuration

Note In the absence of PPS input for the slave mode of operation, TWS FL-8 will use NTP
time as the time reference from the configured NTP server. Because TWS FL-8 is not
synchronized with the PPS time marker, the accuracy of time synchronization is
impacted.

3.10.4. PPS Detection, Stability and Lock Mechanism

TWS FL-8 can be configured with any one of the external PPS sources for time reference.
Once the edge of the external PPS is detected, the ON duration of the PPS pulse is
checked, and it must exceed a minimum of 100 ms for the PPS to be validated.
The next level of validation is the PPS stability check. The external PPS pulse is said to be
stable, as long as the PPS to PPS duration remains constant within the acceptable jitter limit
as mentioned in the following table.
Sl. No. External Time Source (PPS) Jitter Limit (+/- )
1 GPS 10 s

41 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Components and Specifications

This check is performed continuously and the status of the PPS stability is updated every 16
seconds. If the external PPS is stable for 16 seconds, then the PPS is declared as stable;
else, it is rejected. When multiple TWS FL-8 devices are in the locked state, ADC sampling
is synchronized.
TWS FL-8 is said to be locked to External time source when the internal time is
synchronized with the external time source within an acceptable band of time accuracy.
TWS FL-8 is said to be in Not-Locked State if any of the following conditions occurs:
The external PPS does not pass the stability check.
The time difference is not within the acceptable jitter limit.
When there is a transition of TWS FL-8 internal PPS from not-locked to a locked state, time
correction occurs. The time correction can happen in any of the following ways:
Gradual time correction
Abrupt time shift

Gradual Time Correction

The TWS FL-8 internal time is corrected gradually if the difference is less than 0.5 seconds
with respect to the external time. The maximum error correction allowed per cycle is
approximately half of the intersampled delay. Approximately, the time required to perform
the correction for a 0.5-second error is 8.5 minutes. As a result, after the device is switched
on, the clock synchronization LED might take a maximum of 8.5 minutes to turn on
indicating the system is locked.

Abrupt Time Shift

If the difference in time is greater than 0.5 seconds, then the TWS FL-8 internal time will be
abruptly shifted to the external time. The abrupt shift in time is always indicated to the user.

The following figure shows a single TWS FL-8 communication to a computer through
Ethernet or Modem.

Figure 4.1 Standalone TWS FL-8

49 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Installation

If multiple TWS FL-8 devices are installed at a given location or across different locations,
they communicate with each other using twisted pair or fiber-optic Ethernet as shown in the
following figure.

Figure 4.2 Networked TWS FL-8

In Figure 4.2, TWS FL-8 #1 is configured as the time master and TWS FL-8 #2, #3, and #4
are configured as time slaves.

Note The twisted pair Ethernet communications are also known as 10/100 Base-T, and
have a maximum range of 100 m (300 ft) under normal conditions for error free
communication. It is not recommended that the user extend twisted pair Ethernet
cables beyond an adjacent cubicle in a substation environment. This is done to avoid
induced transients from other conductors.
Fiber-optic Ethernet network, also known as 100Base-FX, is recommended for long
distance communication that can be extended over 1 km, when being used in multi-
mode fiber.

4.4. Device Communication Settings

1. Connect the device using default communication settings of the device.
2. User can change the device communication settings in iQ+. Refer section 6.2.
3. Open the configuration window and make the respective changes in the
communication port settings of Ethernet, modem and serial ports.
4. Once the changes are done, user can send the configuration to the device by clicking
on the button Send To Device in the configuration window of iQ+.

4.5. Installation Procedure

Remember the following:

In order to ensure safe operation, first connect the device to protective earth and then
connect it to the power supply.
Before connecting the circuits, ensure that the maximum measuring voltage and
maximum voltage to earth are not exceeded.
Do not use leads and accessories that do not fulfill the relevant safety standards. This
could lead to serious injury or death from electric shock.
Make sure that the device is installed in an area where heat dissipation is not
restricted.
Ensure that the device is in the operating temperature range and humidity conditions
as specified in Appendix A before switching it ON.

4.5.1. Setting up the Device

1. Mount the device on the rack.
2. Connect the power cord to the 3-pin terminal block located on the rear panel of the
device.
3. The 3-pin power terminal block is labeled with L, N, and an Earth symbol. The power
cord must be connected accordingly.
4. Connect analog and digital inputs, and alarm outputs as per the specified
configuration instructions (refer to Section 3.11).
5. If a UPS card is present, ensure that the UPS is switched ON.
6. Switch on the power supply using the button located on the rear panel of the device.

51 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Installation

4.5.2. Starting the Device

To ensure that the device has been installed correctly, the following needs to be checked.
When the TWS FL-8 device is powered ON, all the LEDs on the front panel must flash in
green (in anti-clock wise direction). This indicates that the device is booting up. TWS FL-8
takes about 3 minutes for the boot-up process.

Note If the user has upgraded the firmware for standard MMI, then during the next boot up
of TWS FL-8, the LEDs on the right flash from top to bottom, and the LEDs on the left
flash from bottom to top in green. This is in addition to the normal boot up mode.

4.5.3. Checking for Correct Operation

The front panel Healthy LED must be green. This indicates that the device is installed
correctly and is ready to use.

4.5.4. Connecting the Inductive Couplers (Transducers)

The inductive couplers are shown in Figure 4.3 and 4.4 as shown below:

Figure 4.3 - Inductive Couplers with Polarity Dots

It is important to match the polarity dots of the two sections of the linear coupler
when fitting as shown.

52 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Installation

Figure 4.4 - Inductive Coupler Dimensions

The inductive couplers should have an air gap between the two halves when
installed. Nylon washers are provided for this purpose. See Figure 4.4 for
positional details of the nylon washers.
The linear couplers need to be fitted one on each phase around the secondary wiring from
the protection current transformers associated with the line being monitored. They need to
be fitted consistently facing the same direction on each phase to meet the direction (polarity)
convention. It has been accepted that the positive direction of view is towards the line (see
section 4.5.5). They should be fitted to the connecting leads of a set of protection current
transformers, which are dedicated to feeding a protection relay (digital relays result in better
signals than electromechanical relays). See figure 4.5. If this is not possible, please consult
QUALITROL for advice.

Figure 4.5 - Inductive Coupler Connection

53 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Installation

The connecting cable between the linear couplers and TWS FL-8 should either be:
Three individual cables (one for each phase).
Each cable should be a screened twisted pair cable. Conductors should be of copper
and at least 7 strand 0.25 mm (for mechanical strength in a substation environment).
Insulation should be polythene or polypropylene for low loss.
One cable containing 3 individually screened twisted pairs.
Conductors should be copper and at least 7 strand 0.25 mm for mechanical strength.
Insulation should be polythene or polypropylene for low loss.

The three core cable is preferred.

Terminal blocks are provided to fit the cable to the linear coupler secondary connections.
Alternatively, the cable can be soldered directly onto these connections and a low
temperature heat shrink sleeve fitted to match the cable size being used. The cable screens
should be insulated and left open circuit.
The other end of the cable is connected to the TWS FL-8 analogue inputs marked A, B
and C as shown below in Figure 4.6. Note that polarity is marked on the terminal block.
The + at the line module needs to be connected to the terminal adjacent to the polarity dot
on the linear coupler (see figure 4.3).
The cable screens must be connected to one of the earth terminals on the TWS FL-8 line
module terminal blocks.
The cable(s) at the TWS FL-8 should be clearly labeled with the line name. A label should
be fitted identifying feeder names with line module numbers.

Figure 4.6 - View of Physical Analogue Channel Connections

The length of the cable between the inductive couplers and TWS FL-8 should be
no longer than 25 m. Contact QUALITROL if longer cable runs is required. The
screen is earthed at the TWS FL-8 end only. Observe the polarity: dot on linear
coupler to + on TWS FL-8.

4.5.5. Inductive Coupler Polarity

Care should be taken to maintain polarities so that the phasing of connections from the
current transformers to TWS FL-8 is known. The split core inductive couplers are installed
without circuit outages. The inductive couplers allow travelling waves to be recorded but
attenuate the 50/60 Hz components.

54 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Installation

The convention is to install inductive couplers looking into the line (as described in section
4.5.5). Figure 4.7 shows an in zone fault. The inductive couplers in this example are
installed in such a way that they are looking into the line. The resulting transients recorded
by the TWS FL-8s at either end of the line (shown in green) then have the same polarity.

Figure 4.7 - Fault Occurring on the Line Being Monitored by the TWS FL-8

Figure 4.8 shows an out of zone fault again with both the inductive couplers installed at
each end of the line looking into the line. The resulting transients recorded by the TWS FL-8
this time have opposite polarities.

Figure 4.8 - Fault Occurring Outside the Line Being Monitored

4.5.6. Optional Mounting Board for CTs

If requested, the CTs can be attached to an optional mounting board rather than the usual
loose installation. Figure 4.9a and 4.9b shows how the CTs are fastened to the mounting

4.5.7. The GPS Antenna

Link the GPS antenna to the connection on the rear of TWS FL-8. There are a number of
GPS satellites in different orbits, and at any time, the antenna must be able to lock on to four
of them for accurate time synchronization. This means that the requirements for a GPS
antenna are very different from that of a satellite antenna for domestic use that is a
directional antenna looking at one satellite in a geostationary orbit. The GPS antenna
therefore needs to be installed in a position where it can see the sky as much as possible.
See figure 4.10 for an antenna placement guide. The antenna is provided with a 10 m
connecting cable terminated in the correct BNC plug to fit the GPS antenna socket on the
rear panel. The antenna is mounted on a 25 mm mast and should be placed with as much
visibility to open sky as possible. If necessary, the cable can be extended with up to a
maximum of 30 m of RG6 cable. Longer cable runs require in-line amplification. For further
detail, please contact QUALITROL.

For all the line modules, the following configurations are applicable:
Line Module Name: Specifies the name of the individual line module.
Sampling Frequency: Used to select the sampling frequency. Note that higher sample rates
produce longer files sizes. Use 1.25 MHz OR 2.5 MHz when communication is via modem.

83 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Configuration

Trigger Threshold: Specifies the trigger threshold level which will trigger the line module if
the input signal exceeds this configured value. The threshold level can be adjusted in the
range 20 A to 0.5 mA equivalent to a setting of 4% to 100%.

Note A good default is 20%.

Channel Gain: Used to adjust the ADC input level to a constant value irrespective of the
input applied. The full scale deviation (FSD) input to the FL card is in the range of 50 A to
2mA and to match this input range to the FSD value at the ADC input, the gain needs to be
adjusted based on the FSD input. This is called variable gain adjustment. The user has to
configure the gain value in percentage in IQ+ based on FSD input (0% = 2 mA FSD and
100% = 50 A).

Note A good default is 3%.

Trigger Lockout - Trigger Rate: Used to configure line module lockout triggers. If too many
triggers occur in a short time, the line module will be disabled. The setting range is 30 to 120
triggers per minute in steps of 10.
Trigger Lockout - Duration: Used to configure the lockout duration. A disabled line module
is locked out from 1 minute to 5 minutes before being reset. The input will be disabled again
if multiple triggers continue.
High Priority Time: The purpose of the digital inputs is to flag a significant event like a line
trip and mark any FL triggers that have occurred in a preceding time window as high priority.
The window can be set in the range 200 - 4000 ms via the High Priority Time selection box.
It is recommended to connect the digital inputs to the main and backup protection relays or
trip relays.
Digital Inputs - Channel: Specifies the digital input number. Each line module can support
two digital inputs.
Digital Inputs - Name: Naming convention used for the digital inputs which is user
configurable.
Digital Inputs - Normal State: Specifies the normal state of the digital input which can be
configured either as low or high.
Digital Inputs - Normal State Label: User configurable digital input label name for normal
state.
Digital Inputs - Alarm State Label: User configurable digital input label name for alarm
state.

Maintenance

Note The user can toggle multiple applications by selecting the respective check boxes
provided in the TOGGLEALL section.

The subsequent pages show the updating processes involved after the device is
successfully upgraded. The user can then check for new versions through the System
and Diagnostic Information pages that are displayed.
If the user is using a modem, then the file transfer rate may be very slow. For example,
the CPU_Application may take up to 1 hour 45 minutes to upload the initrd_wthcrcPx.yz
file, which is at least 17 MB.
After the application file is sent, it needs to be toggled for the new file to take effect. If the
person upgrading the device has left the computer unattended for a long time, then the
modem connection might be dropped because of no activity on the line. The default
modem inactive time is 66 seconds.
In this situation, the modem connection must be re-established and the Toggle or
ToggleAll button must be invoked in order for the new version to take effect

FL Manual Trigger
Manual trigger is used to test the basic functionality of the TWS FL-8 device.
Record will be formed based on current input status. This can be initiated using iQ+.

FL External Trigger
If there is any fault on the input line a record will be formed on the corresponding line
module and it is identified as external trigger.

Figure B.1 FL External Triggers

138 www.qualitrolcorp.com
Appendix B TWS FL-8 Functions

FL Diagnostic Trigger
Diagnostic trigger can be initiated from iQ+ software and is used to test the hardware
circuitry. Initiation of a diagnostic trigger will generate two records in each line module, one
for negative pulse and one for positive pulse.

Figure B.2 FL Diagnostic Trigger

FL Digital Inputs
FL digital inputs are used to identify the priority of the external trigger occurred. When there
is a digital input transition to alarm state from normal state in a line module soon after the
fault trigger occurrence on the same line module within the configured time window, then
that particular record (as well as log entry) for fault trigger is marked as HIGH priority, else
the record is marked as LOW priority.

Handling Time Changes

When the user is setting the device time, it can be shifted forward or backward from the
current set time using the iQ+ software.

Forward Time Shift

If the user has set the device time ahead of the current device time, then the situation is
referred to as a Forward time shift. Forward time shift has no effect on recording.

Backward Time Shift

Backward time shift has no effect on recording.
1. Save all available data from the device to the iQ+ server.
