Saving Skins Research Paper

Millions of animals are Animal testing is cruel. With artificial skin less animals will be

tested on, and now in some place of Europe they made animal testing illegal. In the article saving

skin Goldberg says theyre quicker, offer better information, and are more humane. and then it

goes on explaining how artificial skin is more efficient because scientist wont have to

extrapolate human responses from animal-derived data (joch). suffering everyday. Animal are

being used to test new drugs and cosmetics. They undergo terrifying experiments, being restraint

for hours, breathing in toxic fumes, having holes drilled into their skulls, and some left with their

skin burnt off. Bioengineers are now working and developing artificial skin and it may be a new

alternative to animal testing which will tremendously reduce the amount of animals that are

tortured every year. The benefits and problems of using artificial skin for scientific testing are

less animals will be harmed and the problem with artificial skin is its limitations.

William Stokes a toxicology expert is for the alternative method stating that

bioengineered also have the advantage of yielding test that are easier to reproduce from lab to

lab. this is because the the artificial skin is all the same unlike living organisms which have

minor differences that can result in different results.

Artificial skin is a great alternative to animal testing but it cannot substitute animal

testing because in some test scientist need to know not only how the drugs affect the skin but
how it will affect the organs. developing a new drug , for example often requires experiments

that reveal the drugs effects on different organs-all interacting with one another (joch). This is

what I just mentioned saying that there is limitation to the bioengineered tissue. Charles Hewitt

a director of surgical research says we cant get all the responses we need to test just from our

model. The limitation of artificial skin is very high but it has help with screening out drugs that

are likely to fail in clinical trials which means less harm to the animals.

In conclusion the limitations and the fact that less animals will be harm for drug testing

are the problems and benefits of using artificial skin for scientific testing. It will be long till

animal testing will no longer be needed but science is getting closer and closer to find better and

efficient alternatives to end all the harm animals are put through in the scientific testing process.
