a. Motivation/Engagement: TW discuss that today students will be playing a sort game
similar to the math terms and operations. However, this time it will involve word problem
situations. This will be competition between 6 table groups on which group can successfully sort
the word problem into the corresponding operation. TW emphasize that the purpose of this
lesson is to help students understand that they need to read to understand the task before they can
go forward. TW model how to read to understand the task when it comes to word problems
b. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences: SW sort the word problems within their

problem situations.
b. Concerns: Students are having difficulty differentiating between multiplication and
division word problems situation.
c. Insights: This activity has highlighted why students must read to understand the task.
Word sorting is a literacy strategy that they enjoy incorporating into our classroom. We will need
to practice division and multiplication word problems more often in order for students to be able
to differentiate more successfully.
