In your well-constructed lesson plan, you included appropriate teaching
strategies, learning experiences, and materials that met your instructional
objective. First, the class completed and briefly discussed the Do Now
activity regarding possible societal changes in perspectives from the past
to the present. Next, the seventh graders took turns reading aloud 5
pages from The Outsider. Then, you displayed and explained the
expectations for the 4 centers which included independent and small
group work related to the story. During the last half of the lesson, the
groups rotated through each center. At the end of the period, you
assigned finishing the work from Centers 1 & 2 along with answering a
final question.
You appealed to visual, auditory, social, and kinesthetic learning styles
in this lesson.

Evidence (Candidate and Student)
You know how to establish a respectful and positive learning
environment. You greeted the seventh graders and reminded them of
classroom expectations. Your friendly, confident manner made it easy for
students to accept you as their teacher. As a result, the whole class was
mostly well-behaved. When 2 boys were distracted, you gave them a
warning and then separated them from their groups to work on their own.
To engage students in productive tasks, you skillfully organized the
resources of space, activities, time, and attention. The desks were
clustered into 4 stations to facilitate group work. The seventh graders
participated in reading, writing, and speaking activities. As they worked,
you let them know how much time was left to finish up. You circled around
the room listening, prompting, and giving feedback. You sat in with those
needing more support.
Evidence (Candidate and Student)
You skillfully conveyed important concepts and information using
appropriate communication strategies. Your written instructions on the
board provided a visual reference which clarified your expectations and
guidelines for the class to follow. Your directions were clear and to the
point, Center 1 Create a timeline of events for either Johnny or Ponyboy,
Center 2 Read pages 125-130 and answer questions, Center 3 Write a
predictive paragraph. You asked in-depth questions, Why do you think
the book is called The Outsiders?... How can Johnny be considered kind
and caring, but also have murdered someone? You supported learner
expression in both speaking and writing.
You promoted student engagement in the following ways. You had the
seventh graders in Center 4 discuss and share their perspectives.
Frequently, you moved around the room to observe everyones work and
to keep them on track. You also called on individuals to read part of the
chapter or to answer thought-provoking questions. You also asked the
whole class to raise their hands to indicate how they were thinking about
an issue.
To further boast participation, incorporate signaled answers such as
thumbs up/down/sideways to show level of agreement or depth of learning.
This strategy would not only increase participation, it would help you
assess the whole classs understanding.

You thought that your lesson was successful. Your probing questions
helped promote better understanding and deeper thinking. The center
materials you created were of high quality. The seventh graders were
mostly well-behaved. You skillfully redirected a couple when they were off-
task. You accomplished all that you had planned.
Something you would have changed is to give the option to do other
work in Center 3. You found that students needed more than 10 minutes
to write a good predictive paragraph. You would have saved that for
another time.
You informally assessed the seventh graders understanding. You
collected information by observing oral and written responses during whole
class discussion, group work, and assignments. From this evidence, you
thought that most of the students were able to explain characters actions
and reasoning. It would be beneficial to plan in more chorused and
signaled responses for ongoing assessment and increased engagement.
