 Spatula and Stirring Rod

Scientific people doing experiment in the laboratory and need many kinds of

apparatus. There are many apparatus used in chemistry laboratory and each apparatus has its

own function. Spatula and Stirring rod are kinds of apparatus used in the laboratory.

Spatula is a tool look like a long spoon, compressed and stemmed with the upper end

flat. It is made of stainless steel or aluminum. It has a length of about 20 cm with a diameter

of about 4 mm. It is used to take a small amount of solid chemicals. It can also be used to stir

the solution except in the manufacture of the acid solution but only the part that look like a

spoon. After using, the spatula should be washed by using soap and clean water and dried for

some minutes and after that it must be put in a safe place.

A stirring rod or "stir rod" is more thickness and slightly longer than a drinking straw,

with rounded ends. Like most laboratory glass, stir rods are made of borosilicate commonly

known as Pyrex. This glass is very thermal resistance. Stirring rod has several sizes, such as

15 cm, 20 cm and 25 cm long. It is used to mix chemicals and liquids

in beaker glass when doing experiment. To keep stirring rod still in a

good condition, it must be taken care such as before and after using

stirring rod it must be washed by using soap and clean water as well as

keep it in a safe place. Besides that, it should be careful when used

stirring rod so it can be used for long time.

 From the explanation above, it can be concluded that chemicals apparatus must be

taken care to make them not easy to break or damage because they are playing an important

role at laboratory. Like apparatus above, spatula has a function to take a small amount of

solid chemicals and it is made of stainless steel or aluminum. While stirring rod has function

to mix solution and it is made of borosilicate commonly known as Pyrex.
