LAW AND GLOBALIZATION

A Project Synopsis on:

Globalization and Human Rights Abuses in Sweatshops: A study of NIKEs Human Rights
violations
INTRODUCTION:

End of cold war in 1989 unleashed new opportunities and territories for global investors.
Developing countries began to look for foreign investment for their national growth
employment generation. Tariffs were slashed; free trade zones set up, taxes toppled over and
labour laws and environmental concerns were only a remote consideration in their investment
negotiations. Multinational and Trans-national Corporations i.e. MNCs and TNCs
materialized the opportunities and rapidly transplanted their production-units and supply-
chains in the poor countries where labour supply was abundant and material cheap. So much
so around 60,000TNCs are now operating across the globe with 800,000 supply-chains all
over the world.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective this study is to analyse the effect of globalization on labour relations in
multinational companies with special emphasis on Children Rights, Rights of Citizenry,
Gender Equality and Labour Rights. This shall be achieved with the help of a case study on
the Nike Corporation and their international factory operations.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

This paper seeks to examine the human rights violations carried on by the multinational and
transnational corporations since the boom of globalization which started around in the 90s
and how it affected the labour relations in developing/underdeveloped countries.
