MECH 301 THEORY OF MACHINES

FALL 2016
HOMEWORK 5
Due Date: 19.12.16 17:30
1. For the following mechanism. The wheel assembly link weights 45.3 kg, with a center of gravity as shown. The
radius of gyration of the assembly, relative to the center of gravity, has been experimentally determined as
36.6 cm. The motor link is rotating counterclockwise at 3 rad/s and accelerating at 10 rad/s 2. For mass
property estimation, the motor crank will weight approximately 6.8 kg and will be 61 cm long, 30.5 cm wide,
and 7.6 cm tick. The connecting link is estimated to weight 9.1 kg and can be modeled as a 106.7 cm slender
rod. Determine all forces acting on the joints of all links and torque required to drive the motor link.

2. For the following nutcracker mechanism. A force of 22 N is applied to the top handle, as shown, and
mechanism does not move (static). Draw a free-body diagram and determine the forces on the each link. For
this analysis, the weight of each link can be considered as negligible.
