Last January 19, 2010, the former Press Secretary Cerge M. Remonde was found dead in
his bathroom. Makati Medical City pronounced him dead on arrival and their diagnosis: Heart
Attack, another word for Myocardial Infarction. Majority said it was primarily because he
smoked a lot. His colleagues theorize that the culprit could have been their last heavy midnight
dinner. His doctor said that if he was only rushed to the hospital right after the attack, and not an
hour after, the Press Secretary could have been saved. God must have loved the little pig
slaughtered for Mr. Remonde’s meal.
Many before the late Secretary died of this sudden attack. Filipino celebrities like Ace
Vergel (action movie star of dekada 80s) and Ely Buendia (Eraserheads lead vocalist) suffered
from heart attack too; Mr. Vergel died while Mr. Buendia was lucky enough to survive the
excruciating pain.
Myocardial Infarction (MI) dates back to Ancient Egypt where archeologists say that 9
out of 16 mummies were studied to have died of heart attack.1 Researchers said that MI’s
mortality rate rose during the 19th century when industrialization and modernization took place.
Lifestyle began to become sedentary and work became less physical.2 The rising of fast food
chains and the publicizing of smoking and drinking led to more numbers of people suffering
from MI.
“How does smoking cause heart attack?” Many limit their idea to the fact that fatty and
oily food can indeed clog up the arteries or veins of the heart causing the stop of blood
circulation to and from the heart, this happens in smoking too. There is deposition of the
components of a cigarette in place of or with fats and oil within the blood vessels. Alongside
with smoking are: high blood pressure (hypertension), physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes,
all risk factors of MI.3
