Title: Foreshadowing for Second Grade Level Students

Abstract: Students will read The Three Little Pigs and learn about foreshadowing from the text.
After students read, the teacher will explain what foreshadowing is and what it does for the
reader. Finally, students will complete a worksheet determining clues that happen before the
events. Through this lesson, students will learn to understand foreshadowing and how it works.

Grade Level: Second Grade


In-class Instruction Time: approximately 45 minutes

Group Size: Students will be read to and taught as a group, then will complete the worksheet
independently.

Life Skill: Reading skills, writing skills, complex thinking, creative writing skills, integrated
process skills.

Teaching Style: discovery, reading/writing connection, hands-on learning, written, lecture, and
group discussion.

Intended Learning Outcomes: (1) Students will understand foreshadowing and how it is used
(2) Students will be learn to identify foreshadowing, (3) Students will recall foreshadowing
examples from book, and (4) they will gain a desire to write and experiment with different kinds
of foreshadowing.

Background: Teachers must explain what foreshadowing is and what it does for creative
writing. They must know how to read and write to be prepared for the activities in this lesson
plan.

Materials:

The Three Little Pigs book


Worksheet
Writing utensils

Instructional Procedures:

STEP 1: READ THE STORY

Make sure all students are quiet and listen to the story
After you read So he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew his house in, and ate up the
little pig, ask students What do you think will come next?
Continue reading and pause after the wolf speaks every time to ask What do you think
will happen next? until book is done.
STEP 2: DEFINE FORESHADOWING

Explain that foreshadowing is the authors way of hinting with clues that something that
will happen in the future.
Give specific examples from The Three Little Pigs of foreshadowing and clues found
therein.

STEP 3: WORKSHEET

Give students the worksheet found at the bottom of this lesson plan.
Give students time to finish the worksheet
Discuss the correct answers (answer sheet at the bottom of the lesson plan)
Encourage students to use foreshadowing in their future writing.
