Unit Overview

Science: (Unit 1, Lessons 1-3)

In Unit 1, will students will learn about Earth Science. Students will be connecting the lessons
through the unit itself. In this unit, students will learn the different seasons that occur on earth,
the difference and definition between a solstice and an equinox, and the parts of a plant. By the
end of the project, students will put together a power point that will include their learning
process of the three units. An essential question that will evolve in this unit is how can students
determine earth science into their everyday lives?
As these lessons will be divided into three, I will use a week to teach students the unit. The three
days will be about a lesson, fourth day will be a work day the finish culminating project, and the
fifth day is to present their work the class. The lessons will be taught one day each and the first is
about seasons. As a class we will walk outside with the tablets and take a photo outside of their
choosing, but it needs to be a photo showing the sun and sky. With the photo that they will be
taking, we will discuss the seasons through a PowerPoint together to learn the different seasons
Earth has. After the discussion about the PowerPoint, the students will look at their photo taken
from a tablet and determine which season it is by drawing it on the tablets using ABCYA.com,
drawing on a paper, or on a whiteboard. All students should have same answer. After finding out
the season, students will watch an interactive Vizia video that I will assign on their tablet. As
students watch the video individually with headphones as this will give a short formative
assessment during the video for students understanding SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas
or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
(2-ESS1-1). The second day will consist of a lesson on Solstices and Equinoxes. By researching
on the Internet the differences between the two and go over a Sway presentation to prepare the
students with their partner. RI.2.9 Compare and contrast the most important points
presented by two texts on the same topic. (2-ESS2-1). The third day will be about the parts of
the plant. Students will use the Internet to go on the website ABCYa.com to complete their
assignment W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from
provided sources to answer a question. (2-LS2-1),(2-LS4-1). Throughout the assignments it
will all incorporate students using technology such as their iPads, Internet, and websites.
The fourth day is given for the students to begin and work on the culminating project within their
groups. Each group will be assigned a topic from the three lessons to form a final project that
will turn in the classroom website. Students will use all the technology we learned throughout the
prior lessons into this project. The culminating project will include their favorite season as a
group, difference between Solstices and Equinoxes, and then they will label all the parts of the
plant and how they would plant it in their own garden. Once students have finished they will
have it on a PowerPoint file to upload as they will present to the class together. W2.7
Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g. read a number of books on a single
topic to produce a report, record science observations. (2-LS2-1), W.2.8 Recall information
from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. (2-
LS2-1).
