AT_1b Solo Performance (Original)

Using your instrument/s of choice, your task is to compose and perform an original solo piece to the class.
Your melody must be a minimum of 16 bars and a maximum of 32 bars.
Your melody needs to include a title, have a particular purpose (e.g. theme song for game show, childrens song)
and target audience (e.g, adults, children).
Your melody is to be notated onto the music stave in your music workbooks, or notated on music software,
using the appropriate clef, key and time signature, character marking at beginning, correct use of pitch and
rhythm.

You will be assessed on (please refer to Criteria Sheet):

1. Brief explanation of your melody: title, purpose of your melody, target audience, melodic characteristics,
descriptive words.

2. Use of melodic elements:


Clear tempo or tempi (more than one)
Clear melodic characteristics (can you use articulation?)
Clear use of descriptive words
Contrasting contour
Clear tonality or tonalities (more than one, your melody may modulate)
Clear climax which is approached and resolved (can you use dynamics?)
Clear register
Clear range
Contrasting intervals
Clear phrases
Optional Extensions:
Lyrics
Accompaniment (e.g. chords on guitar or piano, backing track created on Garage Band)
Use of motives and at least one of the following: repetition, modified repetition, sequence, modified
sequence, inversion, modified inversion.

3. Overall quality of performance: sound clarity (e.g. accuracy of pitch, intonation, timbre/tone colour), tempo,
rhythmic accuracy, expressive elements (e.g. dynamics, articulation, phrasing).

4. Overall performance etiquette: composure, stance/posture, expression and presence/engagement.

5. Evidence of thorough preparation for your performance.

Fellow students will be actively involved giving helpful feedback on your performance. This is to encourage
continuous improvement in your composition and performance, as well as gaining performance
practise/exposure.
