TOPIC:
Geographic Features and Human Settlements In the USA

Summary:
Exploring the relationship between geography and settlements. Students will understand that people
settle where there are geographical features that sustain life. They will take away that most major
population centers are around water, food, and geographical features that help with safety and life
sustaining supplies. Students might get confused that people just settle because of recreational or
business attraction rather than life sustainability.

-On the first map layer names USA Big Cities should be turned on. It displays
clusters of cities and large cities all over the country. These cities were settled
years ago for many reasons and by turning on future layers you will see
geographical reasons (coal, oil, rivers, mtns, etc) for settled cities.
- By the end of this assignment student should be able to do the following:
1. Identify the geographical features in relation to the population density.
2. Find and list cities with close proximity to water and natural resources
3. Use the map to describe the geographical reasons for human
settlement in their home city
- Visually analyze the map.
Q#1. Describe the geographical landforms that could help support life
(bodies of water, mountains, plains, etc..)
-Use the legend to interpret the map and each layer.
-Use the map to discover the correlation between geographical landforms,
natural resources and human settlements. Do this by switching on and off
individual layers. Use bookmarks for examples.
Q#2. Pick a city. What geographical landforms and natural resources
correlate with its location?
-Explore the map to discover why different cities were settled, relying only on
location and natural resources. Find your home town and reason what
characteristics caused it to be settled.
