Recognising that the defeat of Nazi Germany was inevitable, Joseph Stalin, Franklin D

Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met to discuss how post-war Europe would be organised

most notably the partition of Germany. The agreements not all of which were honoured

Winston Churchill was a British statesman whose goal was to advance the interests of Great

Britain. When in office, that was the principle fundamental to his actions. If other principles came

into conflict with that bedrock commitment, they automatically took second place. And there

were times when what individuals might consider immutable rightspolitical freedom, for

We throw chocolates up to the putty-faced East German frontier troops, as they stand guard

against whom? defending what? atop a Wall that since yesterday has become useless. They

push the chocs away with their boots. One of the West Berliners standing next to me tries again:

Wouldnt you like a West-cigarette? Sheepish refusal. Then I ask: Why are you there? This

The February 1945 Yalta Conference was the second wartime meeting of British Prime Minister

Winston Churchill, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

During the conference, the three leaders agreed to demand Germanys unconditional surrender

and began plans for a post-war world. Stalin also agreed to permit free elections in Eastern

Europe and to enter the Asian war against Japan, for which he was promised the return of lands

lost to Japan in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. Although most of these agreements were

initially kept secret, the revelations of the conference particulars became controversial after

Soviet-American wartime cooperation degenerated into the Cold War. H

It can be hard for visitors to Berlin to imagine where the Berlin Wall once separated Germany's

communist East from the U.S.-friendly West. Today, commuters run to catch a metro where

trains stood for nearly 30 years. Curried sausages are sold and illegal (but popular) parties are

celebrated in empty warehouses just feet from where East Germans were shot by their own

countrymen as they tried to cross the border to the west.

The centrality of World War II in Vladimir Putins thinking has never been more evident than

the ensuing consequences that would have for Russia, the international system, and those who
