Health

Better health is central to human happiness and well-being. It also makes

an important contribution to economic progress, as healthy populations live
longer, are more productive.

Approximately 1.2 billion people in the world live in extreme poverty (which
means they live on less than one dollar a day). Poverty creates ill-health
because it forces people to live in environments that make them sick,
without decent shelter, clean water or adequate sanitation.

Muntada Aid recognises the link between poor health and poverty, thus our
health projects aim to save lives and uplift people out of extreme poverty.

Little Hearts

This year saw the expansion of the

pioneering Little Hearts project to
include Bangladesh. A country with
a growing population of 150 million
people and with many living in
extreme poverty, and suffering from
a lack of investment in the medical
sector.

As well as in Bangladesh, the Little

Hearts project has been active in
saving the lives of children in
Mauritania and Sudan. Our team of
international medical volunteers,
which includes doctors, surgeons
and nurses were able to save the
lives of 215 children in four different

A Little Hearts Story

Weak but bright, 5 year old Afsana

was born with a life threatening
disease; a heart defect. After being
misdiagnosed several times it was
only when she had a stroke in July
2014, which left her partly paralysed,
that doctors found out she had an
ASD (Atrial Septal Defect). Coming
from a poor background, there was no
way her family could pay for her
treatment.

Muntada Aid's Little Hearts project

provided that opportunity when we
sent a team of medical volunteers to
treat her and another 80 children. She
is now enjoying her childhood.

reduction of the alarming rates of mothers dying during labour in Ghana,
Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Mali.

Emergency

Responding to emergencies is at the

heart of Muntada Aids mission. Stationed
in some of the worlds hot spots, we are
able to rapidly respond to a crisis along
with our well rooted local partners,
providing vital essential supplies to those
affected.

In the event of natural disasters, forced

displacement or armed conflict, we work
with local, national and international
partners to respond rapidly to save lives
and reduce harm, meeting the immediate
needs of the most vulnerable households.
We provide essential shelter, food, clean
water and healthcare to help people
through the difficult first days and weeks.

After the immediate crisis period, we work

with affected communities to ensure their
long-term recovery and resilience.

Syria Crisis

2013 was a milestone year for

Muntada Aids emergency relief
programs. For the first time
ever in over 28 years Muntada
Aid expanded its emergency
relief program to include
countries outside of Africa as
part of a long term strategic
shift by the organisation to
rapidly respond to emergencies
anywhere in the world.

Applying the expertise and

experience gained throughout
its years in the field, Muntada
Aid is involved in alleviating the
suffering of the Syrian people
who have been affected by the
ongoing crisis both inside the
war torn country and those who
fled to neighbouring countries
in Jordan and Turkey.

Muntada Aid effectively

responded to the need of Syrian
refugees who were living in
Turkey by distributing
emergency food supplies,
hygiene packs, winter clothes
and setting up shelter &
sanitation facilities in camps.

Eritrean Refugees

125,000 Eritean Refugees In Eastern Sudan, Kasala, we paid a visit to a

in Sudan forgotten problem; Eritrean refugees.
Numbering a total of 125,000, they fled from
the harsh realities of persecution under the
hands of their own government in Eritrea.
Refugees and the local community in eastern
Sudan face acute poverty and lack of access
to health care, education and employment.
Refugees also face difficulties in integrating
locally, and there is no possibility of voluntary
repatriation at this time.

Central African Republic Emergency

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC EMERGENCY

The deteriorating humanitarian situation in

the Central African Republic where political
instability has lead to the internal
displacement of more than 714,000 people
with a further 369,289 people becoming
refugees in neighbouring countries such as
Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo,
Republic of Congo and Cameroon.

With the UN sounding the alarm bells of

the ethno-religious cleansing of the Muslim
minority of CAR and a humanitarian
catastrophe, Muntada Aid was able to
respond to the thousands who have fled to
neighbouring Chad.
With our rapid response to the crisis
Muntada Aid was the first international
NGO to assist the refugees in newly
established Maro Camp located in southern
Chad. The residents, who were on their last
remaining supplies of food, were relieved
to be provided with clean drinking water
and new supplies of food by Muntada Aid.

In all cases of conflict, it is the most

vulnerable in society that are caught in the
middle. Women and children who have to
face the prospects of the realities such as
the displacement and becoming refugees
in other countries. Consequently there will
be an ongoing need for shelter, food, and
clean drinking water to be provided to
affected people.

Water Security

Diseases from unsafe water and a

lack of basic sanitation, kill more
people every year than all forms of
violence, including war. Children are
especially vulnerable, as their
bodies aren't strong enough to fight
diarrhoea, dysentery and other
illnesses.

Over the years, with our many

partners, we have been able to dig
thousands of wells in poor
communities, sustaining life.

In southern Chad, where thousands

of refugees crossed the border from
CAR, we dug water wells in camps
to provide much needed clean
drinking water.

Our team visited the water projects

and were greeted by users who were
thankful for the new wells.

Volunteering with Muntada Aid means to be the backbone of the organisation. Our
volunteers are our support and our drive to get closer to our vision of creating a future
free from poverty and injustice.

C HA R I TY W E EK
Every year thousands of students come
together to raise money for our projects. This
year we would like to give a special thanks to
Kingston University, Greenwich, Roehampton
and UEL Islamic Societies who raised
thousands for our emergency projects.

K I NG S TO N UNIVE R SI TY
A special thank you to Kingston University as
they raised nearly 20,000 for our Central
African Republic Appeal. Here is Brother
Haitham presenting Muntada Aid with the
cheque from Kingston Student Union.

TOP F UNDR A I SE R
Abdur Rabb spent weeks raising money for our
Little Hearts campaign. He was our top
fundraiser for our Little Hearts Bungee Jump
Challenge and raised nearly 3,000. His
message was I have a child with a heart
condition, and I would help any child who has
a condition like thisthere are a lot of children
around the world who dont have the chance
my child hadso I would encourage anyone to
give charity that helps lives directly.

INS P IR ATION
After Attending one of our events, little Syed
was so excited about helping other children
that he put his hand up to donate 1500.
When he got home and counted his money,
he realised that it wasnt 1500 he had in his
bank but 15. This didnt put him off though
because he went about raising the money.
Even before his big event day he has already
raised 600. He is well on his way to
reaching his target.
