Puzzling (a) Space

Soun Hong, Chakraphan Rangaratna, Ding Ren, and Eric De Leon
Zamuco
September 3 - October 22

Presented by Project Andini

Sponsored by Arts Council Korea

FIRST FRIDAY RECEPTION:

Friday, September 3, 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Hillyer Art Space

9 Hillyer Court NW

Washington, DC 20008
(202) 338-0680
Free food and refreshments.

Chakraphan Rangaratna, My
Ship is Not Pretty

Hillyer Art Space and Project Andini are pleased to announce Puzzling (a) Space, a site-
specific exhibition of painting, installation, video and performance by four contemporary Asian
artists: Soun Hong (Korean), Chakraphan Rangaratna (Thai), Ding Ren (Chinese American), and
Eric De Leon Zamuco (Filipino). This exhibition is co-curated by Jeong-ok Jeon (Korean) and
Jammie Chang (Taiwan), and as a collaborative project it will bring dynamic cultural
perspectives to the District arts community and increase cultural exchange between Asia and the
U.S.

Puzzling (a) Space begins with the concept of site-specific art, the notion that an artwork
comes to life within the exhibition space and an audience's participation is similarly an
essential component to the artworks' realization. The place is not just a backdrop or a simple
space to contain the artwork. Rather, the place conveys the purpose and acts as a vehicle for
the art, just as the audience's interaction acts as a catalyst. Thus the artwork will only be
complete in the context of three contributing elements: the artist, the place, and the audience.

Puzzling (a) Space is a dynamic exhibition of paintings, videos, installations and

performance that not only reflects the site-specificity of Hillyer Art Space and a multi-cultural
aesthetic, it also creates an atmosphere for people to see themselves as a integral feature in
the emergence of an artistic event.

The Korean artist, Soun Hong, presents Sidescape, a painting-installation series depicting
devastating images of wars and calamities found on the Internet. As the title suggests,
Sidescape portrays parts and margins of the media images that absurdly represent tranquil
scenery. This new series exhibits the severe snowstorm that struck Washington, DC, earlier
this year. By breaking down the images and randomly displaying them in the gallery space,
Hong invites the audience to review the happening from different angles.

Thai artist Chakraphan Rangaratna creates artworks based on his travel experiences.
In this exhibition, Rangaratna introduces full-color geometric shapes inspired by a trip to
Mexico and transforms them into a mural installation, as in My Ship Is Not Pretty. The sense
of joy originating from the formal elements of his work helps the audience participate in the
exotic and festive atmosphere.

Chinese-American artist Ding Ren's work resonates with the simplicity and nothingness
in everyday life. Ren presents two videos titled Reflected Light Series. She documented the
images of shadows and light that shed on the walls on a specific date and time and projects
them on the corners in the gallery. The notion of corner also implies the artist's blurred
identity between Asian and American.

Having relocated from the Philippines to the United States in 2005, Eric De Leon
Zamuco has dealt with a sense of unfamiliarity to a new environment and an issue of identity
as a new Filipino immigrant. For this exhibition, Zamuco makes a mixed-media installation
titled Tale of Common Things that breaks down the gallery space to reflect his paradoxical
sense of the surroundings.

POPPY Introduces Work of Parisian Artist Virginie Hoyaux

"Urban Space, Concentration and Vacuum"

Artist Reception

Thursday September 9, 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Poppy

3235 P Street NW

Painter, artist, and teacher Virginie Hoyaux is a graduate of Les

Beaux-Arts de in Paris, France. Hoyaux founded "L'association Les
Arts," an association hosting art exhibitions and workshops in Paris.
Hoyaux teaches at the School of Arts at Saint Honore in Paris and
Enghiens-les-Bains.

A series of abstract paintings exploring memories, dreams, time, and

space. Brush strokes are repetitive and rhythmic, at once defining
and erasing space. The artist works with this duality of repetition and
absence to evoke built environments and their gradual dissolution
and evolution. "I'm delighted to preview this compelling artist's work
in Washington, DC," says gallerist Heidi Hess. "The sharp truth of
reality recedes in a cloud of peace in these pieces. Hoyaux's paintings, like all art work represented by
POPPY, highlight stories that bear witness to who we are."

Exhibition continues through Sunday October 24.

Ecological Restoration and Dreams of Natural Streams

Waterways throughout the world are under immense pressure to meet the needs of people yet
many streams and rivers are already seriously polluted or otherwise ecologically
degraded. In many developed countries, recognition of this growing problem has resulted in
major investments to restore or “renaturalize” rivers. In fact, restoration is now a booming
business which may become even larger as regulatory frameworks and environmental markets
continue to embrace restoration as a major environmental policy tool. Just five years ago Dr.
Palmer was writing about the paucity of data on the outcome of stream and river restoration
but today there is a rapidly expanding literature on river restoration outcome. The dominant
approach to restoring streams and rivers remains a hydrogeomorphic channel-design
approach despite growing evidence [which Dr. Palmer will review] that returning streams to
a former, healthier state using this approach is not working. What then are our options? She
will present evidence to argue the following: 1) If the desire is to return a stream to some
former healthier state, then restoration efforts must dramatically change such that the focus
shifts from the channel to the watershed; 2) If the desire is to recover specific ecosystem
services, then “restoration” efforts must become place-based “ecosystem design” projects
and the design must be driven by the processes and ecosystem attributes that produce the
services; and 3) If the desire is to mitigate for impacts and/or to support environmental
markets, the scientific evidence is insufficient to support a stream restoration based approach.

Abbreviated Biography

Margaret Palmer is Professor and Director of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) of the
University of Maryland. She has over 130 publications on the restoration and ecosystem
dynamics of streams and rivers. She teaches several courses on stream restoration, co-edited the
SER book Foundations of Restoration Ecology, and works closely with managers and policy
makers to translate research to practice. As lead scientist for the National River Restoration
Science Synthesis project, she spearheaded the development of the first comprehensive database
on river and stream restoration in the U.S. She is chair of the international freshwater Diversitas
committee, past program director of Ecology at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and
serves on the editorial boards of the journal Restoration Ecology, Current Opinion in
Environmental Sustainability, the Science & Practice of Ecological Restoration book series and the
Year in Ecology & Conservation book series. Dr. Palmer has been honored as an AAAS Fellow, an
Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow, a Lilly Fellow, a Distinguished Scholar Teacher, and with an
Ecological Society of America Distinguished Service Award. Palmer graduated Phi Beta Kappa
with a B.S. in Biology from Emory University in 1977 and from the University of South Carolina in
1983 with a Ph.D. in Coastal Oceanography

Transformer

1404 P Street NW

Washington, DC 20010

(202) 483-1102

Transformer is proud to present Liverpool, UK based artist Rebecca Key in her first
US solo exhibition.

Rebecca creates installations that

question the creative process and explore the background narrative of artists,
artworks and galleries. In her work she references buildings where galleries are
housed, their social contexts and their associated preconceptions.

With Archetype, Rebecca investigates the design of Transformer's gallery space, and
the worldwide use of white walls and grey floors to create gallery spaces. An
accomplished Art Director for British film and television, Rebecca will apply set
dressing techniques used in her professional career to explore how Transformer may
have once appeared in its previous form. Taking reference from the exterior walls of
the buildings surrounding Transformer, one of Transformer's gallery walls will be
layered with specialized paint techniques, textures and props, to appear to be the
alleyway it once was.
Collaborating on the project are Scenic Artist Greg Winter (whose credits include
Batman Begins, The Bourne Supremacy and Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory) and Art Director and Set Dresser Emma Dalton (various BBC, ITV, Channel
4 dramas, soaps, and children's television). Greg and Emma will carry out the
physical 'dressing' of Transformer

Hanamayu: An Exhibit of Silk Cocoon Flowers

Opening Lecture

Friday, September 10, 6:30 p.m.

Japan Information and

Culture Center For centuries silk has occupied a special place in
Embassy of Japan Japan's history, economy and culture. This tradition
1155 21st Street NW and appreciation is at the heart of artist Tomiko
Lafayette Center III Sakai's work. A native of Nagoya, Japan, she has
Washington, DC 20036
been creating beautifully delicate flowers, or hana,
from silk cocoons, or mayu, completely by hand for
(202) 238-6949
over 20 years. Using only the highest quality
Japanese silk cocoons from Gunma prefecture, one
of the few places left in Japan where silk is still being
harvested, her hanamayu creations celebrate each of
the four seasons, expressing the Japanese ideal of
harmony with nature.

Opening Reception

Addison/Ripley Fine Art is pleased to present "the 2nd element: stratus series", new works by Nancy Sansom Reynolds.
In her third exhibition at Addison/Ripley, Ms. Sansom Reynolds brings a large body of new sculpture in a broad range of
materials: bronze, resin and beeswax as well her now familiar, layered plywood. These sinuous, striated, elegant
shapes, often suspended on walls, are at once solid and weightless, capable of taking flight but firmly grounded. It is so
appropriate, therefore, that the artist's title, "the 2nd element" refers to air as do her titles which name cloud formations:
stratus nebulosus, fibratus, pileus, radiatus and castellanus. Poetic names for ethereal forms.

Much of the artist's inspiration for this show comes from her three recent years in the Southwest desert. Ms. Sansom
Reynolds has suggested that her forms reflect the "big sky" of the American Southwest. And she has clearly responded
to her new environment with sculptures which are a significant advance from her last body of work. Ever the thoughtful,
careful, process involved artist, Ms. Sansom Reynolds attains in this body of work, at once a more refined and effortless
appearing group of new sculptures, introducing new colors and more complex forms.

Renate Aller
One View - Ten Years

September 11 - October 23, 2010

Opening Reception for the Artist:

Saturday, September 11, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

ADAMSON GALLERY
1515 14th Street NW
Washington, DC 20005
(202) 232-0707

Adamson Gallery is pleased to present a retrospective exhibition of photographs by Renate Aller, entitled One
View - Ten Years. For the past decade, Aller has been photographing the Atlantic Ocean from a single location
on the southern shore of Long Island. Photographing the ocean at all hours and during all seasons, the artist has
produced a body of work that is breathtaking in its beauty, a testimony to the astonishing and always
unpredictable pulchritude of the natural landscape.

It is difficult to believe that all of Aller's images are taken from the same spot. (Fall 2006) 1:12pm depicts a
choppy ocean and a pinkish sky; the colors beautiful and subtle. The viewer's eye is drawn to the compelling
patterns made by the waves. (Winter 2007) 1:29pm is rendered in moody blues and grays; a low, overcast sky,
through which rays of sunshine beam down, reflecting in the glittering water. (Summer 2006) 12:17pm is almost
abstract, showing a hazy graduation of pink and blue tones as sky melts into placid water. Each work by itself is
remarkable, but together, as a documentation of a decade of practice, they illustrate the extraordinary variability
of water and light.
Aller's metallic C-print photographs are monumental in size, communicating to the viewer the feeling of being
engulfed by the ocean. The absence of human figures, shorelines, or other signifiers of scale effectively
defamiliarize the images: it is impossible to tell the location of the photographs. The contradiction of the
universality and particularity of nature has been enhanced. The printing process has rendered the interplay of
light, color and shadow, the result is a collection of images that make one stop and stare. Aller's photographs
are landscapes and abstractions, beautiful and sublime.

Renate Aller was born in Germany and lives and works in New York and Long Island. Her work has been
exhibited at museums and galleries in New York, London, Italy and Hong Kong. Aller's work is included in the
collections of the Yale University Art Gallery, the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany, among others. A catalog of this series, oceanscapes - one view - ten
years, was published in August 2010 by Radius Books, Santa Fe, NM, in collaboration with Kehrer Verlag,
Heidelberg, Germany. This is the artist's second solo exhibition at Adamson Gallery.

Renée Stout, Party at the House of Chance and Mischief, 2010, acrylic on panel, 30” x 24”
Renée Stout: The House of Chance and Mischief
(September 11 - October 30)

Opening Reception
Saturday, September 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Hemphill

1515 14th Street NW

Washington, DC 20005

Hemphill opens Renée Stout: The House of Chance and Mischief on . The exhibition will remain on
view through October 30, 2010.

In recent years, the contemporary art audience has often appeared more interested in opening
receptions and art parties than in looking at art. But, of course, some parties are more meaningful
than others. Renée Stout’s exhibition, The House of Chance and Mischief, is that party.

The House of Chance and Mischief is based on a recurring dream of Renée Stout’s, in which she is
walking through a familiar house and suddenly encounters a door that leads to new and
mysterious rooms. Stout understands the house of her dream to be a metaphor for the self, and the
newly revealed rooms to represent an expanding awareness of a world inside and outside of that
self.

Her dream, the challenges of friendship and family, and current events comprise the content of
Stout’s fourth exhibition at Hemphill. The show is a cacophonous party where guests peer into the
lives of the characters developed throughout Stout’s oeuvre. She presents a body of expertly
rendered images and carefully manipulated objects, creating various tableaux that also speak as a
personal narrative. Her work blends cultural heritage, personal mythology, and social
responsibility from the perspective of an African-American woman. Utilizing imagery from African
traditions, popular culture, and personal politics, she delineates pathways among cultures,
communities, and individuals. Stout’s open creative process continually introduces new
possibilities for her role as observer, trickster, healer, and artist.

In April 2010, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, awarded Renée Stout the David C. Driskell
Prize, which recognizes Stout’s original and important contribution to the field of African-
American art. Please join us to congratulate Renée and to party in The House of Chance and
Mischief.

From Tesfa to Tikvah: From Hope to Hope: Images of Ethiopian Jews in Israel

Tuesday, September 21, 6:30 p.m.

Sixth & I Historic Synagogue

600 I Street NW

Washington, DC 20001

(202) 408-3100

Exhibit is on view from September 1 - 26, 2010

Since 1991, photojournalist Irene Fertik has been working on a book project documenting the absorption of Ethiopian Jews in their new/old
homeland of Israel. The title, From Tesfa to Tikva, incorporates the word "hope" in both Amharic and Hebrew. Most Ethiopian Israelis
immigrated less than thirty years ago, moving from small, isolated mountain villages to modern technological society. Today, Israel's nearly
120,000 Ethiopians are still in a transitional period, where old ways continuie to be practiced, but are making way for the new.

Through photos and text, Fertik tells the story of these early years of change through the contrast of an ancient African people in a mostly
white modern society. Most families live below the poverty line, yet there are over 2,400 Ethiopian students in higher education studies, 100
Ethiopian small businesses, and 24 Ethiopian rabbis have been ordained. These graceful, reserved people are enduring from tesfa to tikva.

The evening will include remarks by Irene Fertik and feature stories from three Ethiopian Jews living in Israel – Yafit Tadela, Dina Lakao and
Naomi Shefraw – who are currently interning at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Hosted by the New Israel Fund, in partnership with Sixth & I and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Malagueta is a fusion of culture, folkloric tales and legends colorfully rendered and set in voluptuous, airy atmospheres
inspired primarily by the artists Brazilian heritage.
Sketching Session with live model 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Latin Fusion Band performance starts at 9:00 p.m.

Continuing with the amazing night of sketching of the last show we are pleased to announce we will be having sketching
sessions for all our shows! The sketching session is free. We will have 15 special edition blank sketchbooks for sale at the
show as well but you are welcome to bring your own sketchbook.

The event is free and open to the public.

Tatiana Suarez (b. 1983) is a Brooklyn-based Miami native. This emerging artist is an alumni of the University of Miami's
Graphic Design program, and also works as a freelance illustrator. Her charming style is distinctive -- first, the trademark
eyes that draw the viewer into a beautiful and surreal world. Suarez takes full advantage of the oil paint's ability to create
creamy, soft images on canvas. Rich with symbols that stem from her Brazilian and El Salvadorian heritage, subjects
appear as if they are under water, frozen in lovely stillness. The doe-eyed figures look childlike, but also exude sexual
overtones, ornamented with plants, insects and other unsettling accompaniments. Beauty is presented concurrently with
exotic -- even creepy -- creatures to create enchanted narratives.

Every artist has a definition of source; all little pools of the personal that seek to flow
towards a larger body; to somehow return to an undifferentiated unity from which the
familiar can resonate. Source can be one that creates; a maker, or that which supplies
information; a source code. Source can be a point at which substance springs into being or
the energy input point of a system. Nature as refuge from the artificial constructs of
civilization is always present as source. It is from a natural source that humanity has
diversified creating competition and inventing technologies that have brought with them
global problems of massive proportions.

Pat Goslee lives and works in Washington, DC. She received a BFA in graphic design from the
University of Georgia and an MFA in painting from Catholic University. She has served on the
Board of Directors for the Washington Arts Museum (WAM) and the DC Arts Center (DCAC), and
the Advisory Committee for International Arts & Artists' Hillyer Art Space. She has been a visiting
artist lecturer at local institutions including American University and the Corcoran Collage of Art
+ Design.

National Endowment for the Arts.

Summer Nights: Fort Reno Concerts

Where can you find hordes of unrestrained, dancing teenagers, hipster toddlers and dogs, and music-fanatic
families and friends restraining dogs and toddlers while dodging unrestrained, dancing teenagers? Try the eclectic
crowd at the Fort Reno concert series.

Expect the best of D.C.'s hardcore rawk, punk and any-kind-of-indie music scene in these twice-weekly concerts,
which run through mid-August. It's a great way to discover local bands (including Tereu Tereu, pictured), eat a

Shows are 7:00-9:30 p.m.

Chesapeake and Nebraska Avenues NW (Tenleytown)

Fort Reno is located across the street from Woodrow Wilson High School.

From time to time shows get rained out, if you're ever wondering if a show is happening or not call (202) 355-6356

D. B. Stovall, a native Washingtonian, displays his vibrant large

format photographs of classically American landscapes in this series.
Saturated with color, these images reveal the nuanced design of mid-
century American storefront architecture, from Morgantown to North
Platte, Nebraska to Cheyenne; showcasing “things that seem
mundane or commonplace to others yet define our existence,” which
is how Stovall describes “American Vernacular.”

D.B. Stovall worked for almost 10 years as a professional

photographer after graduating from the Rochester Institute of
Technology in the mid-'70s, doing mostly industrial work and
graphic. After a nearly twenty year hiatus, Stovall returned to
photography after he was inspired by a cable television program on
historical Silver Spring. Advances in digital technology, software
and printing enabled him to transform his original photographs into
richly detailed prints.

He now resides in Richmond, VA and is an electrical engineer for a

private firm. His work has been shown at The Delaplaine Visual Arts
Center in Frederick, MD and at the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery in
Rockville, MD.

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.

Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

To all our partners in the DC region -

Thanks again for your support of StreetWise Partners' programs over the last 12 months. We are excited about further
developing and improving our Career Ventures program, as well as our Alumni workshops over the next year, to better help
motivated low-income individuals. Currently 77% of participants have a job, a promotion or pay-rise, or are enrolled in a
career advancing education program within 6 months of starting our Career Ventures program. We want to get this up to
100%!

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer „roles‟ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!

If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An
easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more details below).

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year‟s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not have done it
without you. Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose to serve with us or on our
behalf.

You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ Battle) that you
were interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. PLEASE read on about
the process to becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some general volunteer roles that may interest you.

ABOUT THE PROCESS:

In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application packet. This will
include a registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form (attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy
of their photo ID. Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find
a listing of fingerprinting agencies with which you can make an appointment to complete the card.

**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint check, though they
MUST complete the background investigation consent and permission form for minors and have each form
signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to include ALL required information including social security number
and signature(s)**

ABOUT YOUR ROLE:

Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a potential
volunteer role. General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides, administrative aides,
maintenance, beautification/repair, events/fundraising, or even pro bono services based on your skills. BGCGW also
offers summer programming at most locations. Summer schedules often times include field trips, educational enrichment
workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and more!

I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific Club is
another great way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have attached a listing of our
Clubs for your review. This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and contacts.

Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any colleagues/classmates that
may be interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope to see you again soon!!!

applications for fall internships.

Applications are due July 16, 2010.

We believe in a system in which taxes are simpler, fairer, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today. The

minimized. ATR was founded in 1985 by Grover Norquist at the request of President Reagan.

Internship Description: Americans for Tax Reform offers the chance to work alongside some of the best political
advocates in Washington, as well as the opportunity for increasing responsibility. Interns are assigned to work on
policy issues side by side with members of our staff. As a key part of the ATR team, interns work on projects such
as the

Taxpayer Protection Pledge(both federal and state candidates pledge not to raise taxes), the American
Shareholders Association(focusing on eliminating the Death Tax, expanding Lifetime Savings Accounts and
Retirement Savings Accounts, and social security reform), and the Cost of Government Day, a report identifying
and calculating government spending as a cost to taxpayers.

Qualifications: Duties include, but are not limited to, legislative and political research, drafting policy briefs,
writing press releases, blogging, attending meetings, and assisting with events. Applicants must be organized,
responsible, independent, and effective under deadlines. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are a
must. Interns are required to have a professional demeanor and phone manner. Applicants should have a strong
interest in tax reform and economic policy, and a fundamental orientation toward liberty. ATR accepts applications
from undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Full-time and part-time interns are paid hourly. The
positions can be taken for credit through the applicant's home university or college, coinciding with spring,
summer, and fall semester dates.

Office Location: Our offices are ideally located at 722 12th Street, NW, in the heart of Washington D.C. ATR is
Metro accessible-located across the street from Metro Center.

Application: Please send a resume, a short writing sample on a topic relating to ATR's mission (no more

StreetWise Partners

Established in 1997 by young corporate professionals on Wall Street, StreetWise Partners works to empower
motivated, low-income individuals to be able to achieve the job they want. Our unique model matches volunteer
mentors with motivated participants who work with them over 14 weeks to develop their employability skills,
including hard skills (computer training, resume creation) and soft skills (communication, professional etiquette,
networking). Together, we help economically distressed adults develop the job-search competence, the necessary
soft and hard skills, and the access to professional networks to secure sustainable and career-advancing
employment and be employable in the rapidly changing global economy.

BECOME A MENTOR

The next cycles will begin in March 2010 with options to mentor on Wednesday evenings (6:30-9:00pm, March 3rd
- June 9th) or on Saturday afternoons (11am-2pm, March 6th - June 12th). Both programs are held in downtown
Washington, D.C. If you are interested in being a mentor on one of these programs, you will need to complete an
application at www.streetwisepartners.org/application/volunteer. You are also invited to attend a volunteer
information session at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 10th, to find out more about the program. To RSVP for the

ONE-TIME OPPORTUNITIES

- 1:1 COMPUTER INSTRUCTION. Work 1:1 on a laptop with a motivated job-seeker to help them develop basic
computer skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

- RESUME REVIEW. Spend time reviewing different mentees' resumes before meeting with them and providing
them with verbal feedback.
- MOCK INTERVIEWS. Conduct three mock interviews with our motivated, low-income mentees. Volunteers play
different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager, HR Manager – to give the mentees experience of different types of
interview. Volunteers then give mentees feedback about their performance and their resume.

- SPEED NETWORKING. Listen to mentees' 30 second elevator pitches and give them feedback on how to better
‘sell’ themselves.

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest need is for Savings
Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about taking money management classes,
savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience necessary, we train you.

We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during daytime hours, or who
speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the
email below and please pass on to your networks!

Thanks,

Emily Appel

You Can Change Lives,

One Return at a Time

This tax season you can be a part of a tremendous effort that brings over $9 million
into the homes of DC’s low-income working families each year.

Volunteer as a Savings Promoter or Tax Preparer with the

DC Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign
(www.dceitc.org)!

Our Success Depends On Volunteers Like You!

Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working family’s income by
more than $6,000.

This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills, and save for
future goals and needs.

Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to move up the
economic ladder!

*The Campaign's greatest need is for additional Savings Promoter volunteers.

No Professional Experience Needed
If you know how to complete a tax return, or have done your own taxes, you can volunteer as a tax preparer. All
preparers receive 12 hours of free training (on Saturdays and/or weekdays evenings) and IRS certification in
January.

Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive training to enable
you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes and credit counseling, and even open
direct deposit accounts!

Opportunities for Everyone

In addition to tax preparers, we need volunteer interpreters and Savings Promoter
volunteers to educate clients about savings products and free financial resources.

Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.

Flexible Hours & Locations

Volunteer for 3-4 hours a week from January 30 through mid April at one of 12 sites throughout the DC area. Most
sites are open on evenings and/or weekends.
