ESSAY QUESTIONS
1. The crane hook carries a load of 20 kN as shown in figure (i). The section at X-X is rectangular whose
horizontal side is 100 mm. Find the stresses in the inner and outer fibers at the given section. (R13)
2. The C frame of a 100 KN capacity press is shown in figure (ii). The material of frame is grey cast iron whose
ultimate tensile stress is 200 MPA and FOS = 3. Determine the maximum stress at both inner fiber and outer
fiber. (R13)
3. The horizontal section of crane hook is symmetrical trapezium 120 mm deep, the inner width being 90 mm
and outer width being 30 mm. The hook is made of plain carbon steel 45C8 (Syt = 380 N/mm 2) and the factor
of safety is 3.5. Determine the load carrying capacity of the hook. Also draw the crane hook and show the
location at which maximum stress is acting. (R13)

fibers. The bending moment acting on the bar causes a tensile stress of 20 MN/m2 in the inner fibers. What

9. Determine the load carrying capacity of a hoop of rectangular cross-section. The thickness of the hoop is 6.5
mm; the radius of the inner fibers is 100 mm, while that of the outer fibers is 200 mm the line of action of the

16. A machine member is made from a triangular section rod and is located as shown in figure (vi). If the
maximum stress at any section or point is not to exceed 20 N/mm2, determine the dimensions of the rod.
17. The frame of the screw clamp is Trapezium–cross section as shown figure (vii). The distance between the
center of screw to the inside of the frame is 150 mm. The maximum axial thrust obtainable along the
centerline of the screw is 50 kN. Design a suitable frame for the clamp.

press is shown in figure (viii). Calculate the maximum stress in the section of the frame.
