theoretical contributions, in order to show that discomfort is structural and inherent to the
subject, and it is expressed by the possibilities provided by the culture in every epoch. By taking
into account the psychoanalytic theory about the constitution of the subjectivity, it is
possible to analyse the structural components of the discomfort that derives from that
constitution.
There are different ways through which the subject shows and tries to work out his discomfort,
including the formations of the unconscious. The paternal metaphor provides the symbolic
resources for that purpose, but the subject has to deal with the main obstacle to this aim: the
superego. Subjectivity and discomfort are closely related to culture and epoch.
Harry Haller, the main character of the book "Steppenwolf" by Hermann Hesse, provides
elements that show the relationship between the subject
and his discomfort, and the possibilities he has so as to work out such discomfort.
This work is part of a research project (2014 – 2016), called "Authority, its
relationship with the subject and legitimacy," which develops within the Research
Council of the University of Aconcagua, Mendoza.
The aim of this study is to investigate the role of authority, and its difference
with the concept of submission. For this purpose, the meaning of authority is
examined from different disciplines, but its impact on the constitution of subjectivity
is analyzed particularly from psychoanalytic theory. The study involves individual
and also mass subjugation related to authority and authoritarianism. It attempts to
explain the paradoxes of submission: in one hand, structural subjugation of the
subject to the language; on the other hand, submissing in order to complete the
Other, what leaves the subject without possibilities.
In the constitution of the subjectivity and the role that law plays in it,
Psychoanalysis finds paradoxes that are inherent to that structure. It is an illusion
to imagine perfection in the function of authority. Accordingly, the subject may
place himself in a responsible condition with law (the paths of the desire), or
undergo himself to the authoritarianism (the paths of the jouissance).
