Datums of Size (Datum Features of Size)

•Internal/External Cylindrical Datums of Size

•Rectangular Datums of Size
•Establishing Datums of Size

A Datum of Size is a Feature of Size (Cylindrical or Rectangular)

Which is Called Out and Utilized as a Datum Reference*
Internal Cylindrical Datums of Size
– Called out by attaching the datum callout to the dimension of the
feature of size*
• If applied to a cylindrical feature of size, the true datum is the established
center axis of the cylinder*
• Center Axis is Established with an Adjustable Gauge or functional Gauge
• These features are subject to variation in location or size and can be
controlled by dimensional as well as geometric tolerances

The True Datum is the Established Center Axis*
Not the Surface of the Cylindrically-Shaped Feature
External Cylindrical Datums of Size
• Cylindrical datums can be established with a chuck, collet or some kind
of Functional Gauge
Establishing Cylindrical Datums of Size
• Cylindrical datum axes can also be established in an expandable gage
• The tolerance zone is a 3-D cylinder about the established datum Axis*
• The diameter of the 3-D Cylinder is specified in the related feature control
frame

Outer Axis is

Rectangular Datums of Size
If applied to a rectangular feature of size the true
datum is the established center plane of the
feature

True Position Example – Internal Cut is “Centered” on Outer Chunk

Establishing Rectangular Datums of Size
• Rectangular datum centerplanes can be established with an Adjustable
Gauge
• The tolerance zone is two parallel planes about the established
centerplane*
• The distance between the two planes is the specified in the related
feature control frame
