Study Program: BSCS

Semester: FALL 2016

Course Code/Title: Statistics & Probability

Resource Person: Mr. Iqbal Shoukat

WARNING
1. PLAGIARISM OR HIRING OF GHOST WRITER(S) FOR SOLVING THE ASSIGNMENT(S) WILL DEBAR
THE STUDENT FROM AWARD OF DEGREE / CERTIFICATE, IF FOUND AT ANY STAGE.
2. SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS BORROWED OR STOLEN FROM OTHER(S) AS ONE’S OWN WILL BE

GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENT # 1:

You should look upon the assignments as a test of
knowledge, management skills, and communication skills. When you write an assignment
answer, you are indicating your knowledge to the teacher:

 Your level of understanding of the subject;

 How clearly you think?
 How well you can reflect on your knowledge & experience?
 How well you can use your knowledge in solving problems, explaining situations, and
describing organizations and management?
 How professional you are, and how much care and attention you give to what you do?

To answer a question effectively, address the question directly, bring important

related issues into the discussion, refer to sources, and indicate how principles from the course
materials apply. The student must also be able to identify important problems and implications
arising from the answer.

You are required to select one of the following issues according to the last two
digits of your roll number. For example, if your roll number is B / M - 12443 then you will select
Question # 4 & 3 ( the last two digits.)
0- IAS Engineering manufactures castings. The total fixed cost for each casting is £80 and
the variable cost per unit is £6.
a) Calculate an expression for total cost (c) in terms of q, the quantity produced.
b) Use your answer in a) to determine the total cost if 150 units are produced.
c) Prepare a graph of the expression for total cost.
d) Use your graph to determine the total cost if 100 units are produced.
e) Distinguish between descriptive Statistics and inferential Statistics.
1- The quantities of castings produced by Bretts Ltd during the year ended 31 December
2013 and the related costs are as below:
Month Production Factory Costs £000’s
January 17 45
February 10 59
March 13 75
April 14 80
May 11 65
June 27 46
July 15 35
August 14 30
September 13 25
October 12 20
November 11 15
December 15 35
Assuming that the costs remained stable throughout the year:
a) Draw a scatter diagram related to the data provided above and plot on it the line of best
fit.
b) i Calculate the expected factory cost if 15,000 castings were produced in a particular
month.
ii From the table above and your scatter diagram, estimate Brett’s’ monthly fixed costs.
iii Comment on your findings in parts b) i and ii.
2- Iqbal & Co, a local legal firm have calculated the cost of taking on a case for a client. The
total cost £T of legal action is given by: T = 1280 b + 360 s + 70 c, where b is the
number of days a barrister is used, s is the number of days a solicitor is used and c is the
number of days a clerk is used.
a) Find the total cost if the barrister works for 12 days, the solicitor works for 11 days and
the clerk works for 25 days.
b) Rearrange the formula to find the number of days the barrister works in terms of s, c
and T.
c) If T = 7980, s = 23 and c = 15, find b.
d) Rearrange the formula to find the number of days the clerk works in terms of b, s and
T.
e) If the total cost was £19,260, the barrister worked for 18 days and the solicitor worked for
22 days, for how many days was the clerk employed?
3- What is the major difference between Tabulation and Classification? Draw and define the
different types of graphs with suitable Graphs and examples.
4- a- Define Statistics. Explain its types, and importance to trade, commerce and business.
b- ESE Electrics produce electric motors. The total costs for each motor is £85 and the
variable cost per unit is £8.
a) Calculate an expression for total costs (c) in terms of q, the quantity produced.
b) Use your answer in a) to determine the total costs if 180 motors are produced.
c) Prepare a graph of the expression for total costs.
d) Comment on how the above calculations and graph could be used by ESE Electrics.
5- The table below shows the distribution of salaries of employees in Dun ford and Sons.

SALARY 5,000- 10,000-14,999 15,000- 20,000- 25,000- 30,000- 35,00

RANGE (£) 9,999 19,999 24,999 29,999 34,999 0+
NO. OF 156 134 92 49 27 18 15
EMPLOYEES
a) Make the necessary calculations and draw a cumulative frequency.
b) Calculate the number of managers, given that senior managers’ salaries are £30,000
and above, and middle managers’ salaries are greater than £20,000.
c) Calculate the ratio of senior managers to middle managers.
d) Calculate the percentage of the workforce which are not senior or middle managers
(i.e. other employees).

6- Clearly bring out the difference betweeen primary data and secondary data and
explain in detail the sources of primary and secondary data.

7- Define in detail the meaning of Parameters, Coefficient, variable and types of

variables (Explain the variable types with the help of diagrams).

8- The following table gives the ages and blood pressure of 9 women.
Age (X) : 56 42 36 47 49 42 60 72 63
Blood Pressure(Y) 147 125 118 128 145 140 155 160 149
Find the correlation coefficient between X and Y.
i- Determine the least square regression equation of Y on X.
ii- Estimate the blood pressure of a woman whose age is 45 years.
9- Calculate Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient between advertisement cost (X) and sales
(Y) from the following data:
X 39 65 62 90 82 75 25 98 36 78
Y 47 53 58 86 62 68 60 91 51 84
