Title of the Paper

Instructions: In this Assignment, you develop a research question relevant to your practice area

and relate how you would work through the progression from data to information, knowledge,

and wisdom.” Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following areas. Your paper must

include a title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page. The title and reference

pages are not included in the required 3-4 pages.

The first paragraph will introduce your paper. The introduction provides an overview of

the topic, the purpose of the paper, and all of the topics that will be addressed. You need to

include a clear purpose statement, “The purpose of this paper is….

Clinical Question

Summarize the clinical question you developed and connect the question to a specific

area of practice. Provide some brief background information and explain the reasons why you

chose this question. Discuss what you currently know about this topic. Identify what additional

information you would need to answer the question.

Some examples of questions from the Vanderbilt School of Nursing

https://nursing.vanderbilt.edu/phd/clinicalfaq.php

1. Does the administration of pain medication at time of surgical incision reduce the need for
pain medication twenty-four hours after surgery?
2. What maternal factors are associated with obesity in toddlers?
3. What elements of a peer support intervention prevent suicide in high school females?

placenta separation?
7. Do teenagers with Type 1 diabetes who receive phone tweet reminders maintain lower blood
sugars than those who do not?

8. Do the elderly diagnosed with dementia experience pain?

9. How can siblings’ risk of depression be predicted after the death of a child?

10. How can cachexia be prevented in cancer patients receiving aggressive protocols involving
radiation and chemotherapy?

Examples of some general health services research questions are:

1. Does the organization of renal transplant nurse coordinators’ responsibilities influence live
donor rates?
2. What activities of nurse managers are associated with nurse turnover? 30 day readmission
rates?
3. What effect does the Nurse Faculty Loan program have on the nurse researcher
workforce? What effect would a 20% decrease in funds have?
4. How do psychiatric hospital unit designs influence the incidence of patients’ aggression?
5. What are Native American patient preferences regarding the timing, location and costs for
weight management counseling and how will meeting these preferences influence
participation?
6. What predicts registered nurse retention in the US Army?
7. How, if at all, are the timing and location of suicide prevention appointments linked to
veterans‘ suicide rates?
8. What predicts the sustainability of quality improvement programs in operating rooms?
9. Do integrated computerized nursing records across points of care improve patient outcomes?
10. How many nurse practitioners will the US need in 2020?
Using Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom Continuum

In the body of the paper, relate how you would work through the four steps of the data,

information, knowledge, and wisdom continuum. Be specific. In the text on page 98, there is a

paragraph that demonstrates how clinical data (vital signs), information (trends from a series of

vital signs), and knowledge (potential for sepsis and need of nursing interventions) support

wisdom (the application of knowledge to deal with complex problems and needs).

Here is what you need to cover in the following sections of the paper in respect to

the DIKW continuum and your clinical question.

4

Data: You need to describe your search terms and clinical and other raw data that has not

been interpreted.

Information: This would be information from the articles you obtained clinical and other

raw data that has been interpreted.

Knowledge: This would be what you learned in the articles by synthesizing the

information you gleaned from the articles

Wisdom: This would be how you will apply the knowledge in practice.

Data

In a paragraph or two, you would discuss clinical data and population data related to your

clinical problem. Provide an explanation of how this data could help your answer your clinical

question. Considering what additional information you would need to answer the question,

explore the available databases in the Walden library and identify the databases and search terms

you used to gather this information.

Information

In a paragraph or two, you would describe how data is transformed into information.

Discuss how clinical data is transformed into meaningful information. Explain how you would

extract and apply the relevant information from the articles. Provide an explanation of how this

information could help your answer your clinical question. You should integrate some of the

articles you found in your search in this section.

Knowledge

In a paragraph or two, you would relate how information can be synthesized to form

knowledge. Explain how the clinical information can be synthesized to form useful clinical

knowledge. Discuss how you would take the information gleaned from the literature and turn it
5

into useable knowledge. Provide an explanation of how this knowledge could help your answer

your clinical question. You should integrate some of the articles you found in the search into this

section of your paper.

Wisdom

In a paragraph or two, you would discuss how knowledge can be appropriately applied in

the management and solution of human problems. Explain how you would progress from simply

having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make clinical decisions about the problem you

identified. Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the

wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search.

Conclusion

Your conclusion should be two paragraphs. One paragraph should answer the question:

“Can informatics be used to gain wisdom?” In the second paragraph you would restate the main

ideas tying everything together to help clarify the main points of the paper.

Please remember that the reference page should only include references cited in the body of
your paper. You need to integrate additional resources and course readings in your paper.
To earn an excellent rating you need to integrate 2 or more current, credible additional
sources and 2-3 course resources into your application assignments.

There are several important points for your Application Assignments I wanted to
highlight:

 The use of direct quotes is discouraged and should only be used when the source
material uses language that is particularly striking or notable. The rubrics require you to
synthesize the resources, not quote them.
 The introduction should provide an overview of the topic, the purpose of the paper, and
topics that will be addressed. Remember to include a clear purpose statement.
7

 Credible sources include scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles, evidence based

resources, and professional (.org), educational (.edu), and government websites (.gov).
Commercial websites (.com) are not considered credible sources.
 When selecting articles for course assignments, you are advised (unless you are
referencing seminal information) to focus on work published within the past five years.
