FISHERIES LABORATORY: 1, ZEPHYR CAMS: 4

Tuesday, 7th May 1991

A succession of strange refereeing decisions and some swift counter-attacking football late
on left the Lab on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline at Lowestoft Town's Crown Meadow
stadium.
However, the winning margin was not indicative of "a hugely enjoyable contest between
two evenly matched sides" (© Barry Davies) and it was not until the controversial sending-
off of Matt Sherlock in the second half that Zephyr Cams started to take over. They had
opened the scoring mid-way through the first half during a lively spell in which they struck a
post after a fine sweeping move. The manner in which they took the lead was less than
convincing, though. The ever dependable Alasdair Scott was jostling for possession in the
penalty area and was incredulous when the referee called a foul. No mistake was made from
the resulting penalty.
The Lab responded well after this setback. Kins Leonard surged forward and Andy Gouldby
made his presence felt in the forward line. Indeed, intense pressure earned the Lab an
equaliser from another penalty, this time for hand-ball. The impressive Wayne Newlands
converted for a deserved goal and minutes later Gouldby was unlucky to see his shot pass
inches wide of the goal. At the other end, Matt Sherlock pulled off a fine save on the stroke
of half-time to keep the scores level.
After the interval, the pressure continued, the Lab forcing a string of corners and the
defensive men, Dave Turner, Marc Scriven, Trevor Bailey, Alasdair Scott and substitute
goalkeeper, Matthew Eagle, were largely untroubled. On the hour, however, events took a
drastic turn. The combination of the curious dismissal of Matt Sherlock and the substitution
of the injured Kins Leonard turned the game. A scrambled goal from a corner was conceded
shortly after and despite good saves from Matthew Eagle, two goals in the last 8 minutes
sealed the match for the team in blue.
The Lab team's performance, especially in the first half, bodes well though and with more
luck, better results are surely ahead in future matches and in the Beccles 5-A-Side League.

FISHERIES LABORATORY: 4, DEPT. OF SOCIAL SECURITY: 4

28th April, 1993

On the 28th April, the Fish Lab football squad once again fashioned its unique blend of
youth, experience and decapitated domestic fowl to take on a spirited DSS side. Much was
expected of a side that boasted such soccer luminaries as Steve Milligan in his comeback
match, skilful Kins Leonard and big Alasdair Scott, the man whose tackling makes hardened
opponents cower and subscribe to "Caravan Monthly". However, even these experienced
campaigners must have been startled by lain Staniland's searching 40 yard pass and Glenn
Round's composed lob to open the scoring in the first minute. A defensive blunder allowed
the DSS an equaliser but this proved to be a brief respite from Fish Lab domination. In the
16th minute, Steve Milligan's corner forced an own goal to restore the lead and after good
efforts from Andy Gouldby and Marc Scriven, the team's confidence grew visibly. The ever-
relaxed Trevor Bailey appeared to play the entire match with his hands in his pockets to
thwart the bitterly cold wind and it was no surprise when Round stroked in his second goal
before the interval for a comfortable 3-1 lead.
The half-time break did not disrupt the one-way traffic and on 49 minutes, Phil Welsby
evaded a strong challenge to cross unselfishly for Round to complete a superb hat-trick.
With Scriven putting in a virtuoso performance in midfield and Staniland relishing his free
role behind the two forwards, there was no indication that the Fish Lab would contrive to
press the "Let's throw the game away spectacularly while we're playing well and leading 4-1"
button. The DSS scored two goals in 8 minutes and in between making vital saves, Matthew
Allison juggled various goal-bound efforts to give his defence palpitations. As the minutes
ticked away, an equaliser looked increasingly likely. Kins Leonard, immaculate in the heart of
defence, was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area and the resulting spot-
kick gave Allison no chance.
Overall, a disappointing draw snatched from the jaws of victory but the team should take
heart from a first half display of real quality.
