Vehicle Identification Number VIN

The Volvo Truck Corporation has used a system for identifying all vehicle models since 1981. The identification system
was devised to comply with the legal requirements of the USA and various countries in the EU.

The system consists of three components:

1. Frame stamping VIN

2. Product plate
3. Decal for special versions

Information in a “VIN”
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) contains a lot of information about the vehicle. Below is an example of a VIN:

The product plate contains information about the type of chassis, drive, wheelbase and VIN. The information is
stamped onto the plate by Volvo
The product plate is left blank for Italy.
, after which the plate is screwed on during production. A supplement, consisting of the nationally approved axle
loading, shall then be punched in by the importer involved. After this the plate must be securely riveted by the general
agent. The location of the product plate varies, and is for:

F4, F6, F6S On the sill on the passenger side door.

F7, FL7, FL10, FL12 On lower edge of the driver's side door.

The plate is located on the cab pillar.

On older vehicles the cab number plate is located in the cab and states the type of cab, serial number as well as colour
codes. After 1993, this information is found on the product plate.

Engine designation

The engine designation is found on a plate or is stamped directly on the cylinder block, and specifies the type of engine
and serial number.

Valve cover

The label contains, among other things, information about:

Engine model. If EEV is selected it will be listed after the engine model. (Example: D13C460 EEV)

The dimension plate specifies the name of the manufacturer, vehicle identification number, length and width, and the
distance between the front edge and the centre of the trailer hitch. If a fifth-wheel coupling has several connection
points, the least and greatest dimensions must be given. The values noted must be exactly the values found by
measuring the vehicle.

The vehicle identification number is the only one punched at the factory.
