Voltage measurement

Conditions:
Breakout box with adapter connected between the relevant control unit and the cable harness.
Voltage measurement using multimeter 9812519.
Starter key in the drive position.

Note: The voltage on the data link varies and depends on the number of control units and the traffic on the data link.

Aim:
The measurement is made to check whether there is any activity on the link.

SAE J1939 A - ground U ≈ 2.7 ± 0.3 V

SAE J1939 B - ground U ≈ 2.3 ± 0.3 V

Evaluation:
U ≈ 0V indicates a short circuit to earth.
U > 5 V indicates a short circuit to higher voltage.
SAE J1939 A should always have a higher value than B.

Resistance measurement

Conditions:
Switch off vehicle power.
Breakout box with adapter connected between the relevant control unit and the cable harness.
Measure resistance using a multimeter.
Starter key in the stop position.

Measurement points Expected value

SAE J1939 A - SAE R ≈ 60 Ω
J1939 B
Two terminations

Comments:

When the resistance is R ≈ 60 Ω, the cable harness is probably fault-free from that connector to the two termination
resistors.

If the resistance is R ≈ 120 Ω from the connector in question, only measure to the single terminal resistor.

Note: Termination resistance is used to minimise interference on the link.

Interface 9998489 or 88890040 connected to measuring box.
Starter key in the drive position.

Oscilloscope settings:
Use VCADS-PRO test 37274-3.

Evaluation:
See the following graphs. Each graph is followed by a description of the fault in question.

Note: The most important value, when evaluating using an oscilloscope, is the amplitude of the signal (max to min for
the relevant signal) and not the frequency of the signal (the distance between the signals). The values, particularly the
frequency, can vary depending on which type of oscilloscope is used. The frequency is also dependent on how many
control units communicate on the data link.
