INTRODUCTION
The aim of this senior project design is to obtain innovative design proposals for
the museum in which investigation of contextual, cultural, and social values offers
critical guidelines for visualizing original future urban strategies by replacing the
old museum building. This project will seek to revisit museum (public) building
through multidisciplinary approach aiming at socially, ethnically, economically,
environmentally and culturally sustainable solutions by introducing mixed uses,
spatial flexibility, environmental solutions and improving urban qualities of the
surroundings. The senior project is divided into two parts. The first part involves
site plan and urban analysis considering existing characteristics of the site, local
administrative regulations, contextual influences of wider surroundings and
current requirements as well as reasons for the demolishing of existing museum.
The second part on the other hand deals with fundamentals of designing natural-
historical museum and constructing the museum building.

This study research will be encouraged by considering the following items:

- attempt to reconnect the museum with surrounding areas;

- museum model oriented towards inhabitants of all ages (students, elderly,
disabled, etc.)
- a sustainable and affordable museum concept that could be used as a model for
future developments;
- innovative methods of creating social connection between public and private
areas.
- Future museum concepts will be able to posses a variety of aims, ranging from
serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public.
- The development concept of continuing acceleration in the digitization of
information, combined with the increasing capacity of digital information storage,
which will cause the model of museums (for example as static “collections of
collections” of three-dimensional specimens and artifacts) to be flexible and
freely accessible for everyone.
- The future concept will reqire the expanding and inclusion of virtual exhibits and
high-resolution images of their collections for perusal, study, and exploration
even from any place with internet access.

2. LOCATION AND CONTEXT

The city of Novi Pazar is inserted into a quite specific geomorphological and
natural context of a bit long and straight valley surrounded by couple of hills and
minority of small mountains. This particular configuration defines the present
character of the city – almost entire flat area is occupied by high rise public and
semi-public buildings. The city itself reveals overlapping of different historical
phases which left important traces on the urban fabric and built environment.

However the transitional periods and contradictions between socio-political

systems have revealed the complete lack of overall vision what the urban
structure of the city should be leaving plenty of space for temporal and purely
profit based interventions. The synthesis between these factors has major
influence on the final design proposal of museum in the core of city center.

4. REASONS FOR DEMOLISHING

These days whether old buildings should be removed and replaced by modern
construction have been discussed by urban designers and architects. Generally
speaking, old buildings are unsafe and spoil the cityscape. However, some of
them have a significant meanings and historic values, some of them even do have
special architecture styles, though, they are old and unsafe, they should be well
preserved instead.

According to these researches and discussions of scholars, we realize that the

best result will be that this old museum should be destroyed and building of
modern constructions is much required. As a consequent, it 'offers' the dose of
unsafety. That's why one of the possible consequent, it can be harmful and
danger for people to work or visit such site or building, people may image that it
would collapse one day and have themselves injured, which pose potential hazard
to people’s lives. Furthermore, old buildings spoil the cityscape. The removal of
old museum will help promote the city image and status, so that it can appeal
tourists and investors to allocate money in its development in a proper way.

On the other hand, old sites should not be demolished. This means some of
them have their own significant meanings and historic values. In this case,
specifically, this old site, that is surrounding the museum, should be well
protected for people to enjoy, because they have been a part of history. In
addition, the architecture styles of some old buildings are considerable
popularity, and it is worthwhile learning by current designers.

On the basis of the above factors, I concede that this old museum should be
demolished and build modern museum instead, to meet the needs of city
development. However, I believe, through the analyses, that Museum has their
own historic values and it may not be removed if municipality authority express
their desire for its conservation.
